  • Painting the Forth Bridge and a look at modern bridge-building including temporary bridges, taking place all over Britain today; but why are they so unattractive? There is competition on cost but why not design? Reflecting on past bridge successes and future methods of construction.

Another great J Arthur Rank production from the early 1960s with the optimism dial showing full throttle. Captures the people, clothes, vehicles, etc in typical Look at Life style. These short films are a wonderful archive, trapping a bygone era for future generations to marvel at. More, more, more, please!

Thanks for posting this. Like all the Look At Life films, it’s amazing how much ground they cover in one mere episode. Great snippets of information about British life from a now bygone era. Fascinating stuff.

I drove across the Perth Narrows Bridge this morning. A 2nd bridge has been added next to it plus a railway line now runs between the two bridges.

All about bringing from the 60’s. Great piece on that masterpiece of British engineering, the Bailey Bridge st about the 5 min mark. Set in Edinburgh of all places!

Look how empty the roads and bridges are. We have significantly over populated this beautiful island.

I wonder what the life expectancy was, going up that bridge with nothing more than a pair of gloves.

Never heard the word “controversy” pronounced the way Tim Turner does in this film - though he can be forgiven for not being able to pronounce Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch!

When men were real men and allowed to do proper work and not wrapped in bubble wrap and cotton wool. Now if you cut your finger, paperwork needs to be filled in, investigated why it happend, training on how not to do it again and PPE being made to be worn. So glad I have retired. What a health and safety world it is now. Back in my day you either carried on or put black tape over your cut and sorted it out later, if you could be bothered.
