- Here's the Porsche 918 Spyder Hypercar, a high revving, 4.6 litre naturally aspirated V8 with hybrid assist generating a combined 887 horsepower and 940 pound-feet of torque!The V8 engine is paired with a dual set of electric motors and a seven-speed PDK gearbox. Together with four-wheel drive and active aero - the Porsche 918 Spyder has mind-bending performance!

The design of this car hasn't aged at all, stunning.
That’s because it acts as a DNA template for all Porsche models throughout a 10 year period. First 5 years is subtle integrations, last 5 years is accelerated changes (taycan). In 2025 Porsche will release a new hyper car.

the 2010 to 15 was the best years for supercar designs. mainly porsche, lamborghini, mclaren, ferrari, etc.

That infotainment system is already noticeably outdated af tho. There's nothing anyone can do about that though. The technology simply moves too quickly. Not a big turn-off though...not the reason you buy a million dollar porsche anyway.

I prefer the 918 without the Weissach Package too, I think out of the current Hypercar Holy Trinity the 918 is the best looking, its really elegant.

The Holy trinity is still the trio I want. When the Project One, Valkyrie and Apollo IE are out that will be crazy to. To me I like the 918 Spyder and Laferrari more then the P1 for looks and that sound of the NA engines are what I want.

P1's actual performance against 918 was a joke, usually. Laferrari's, very busy looking. Some people like more classic and circular lines, than all those wedges and angles.
@@exnihilonihilfit6316 this beat the p1 around the ring, laguna seca and Anglesea.. 3 very different tracks...its widely excepted thta this was a faster car than the p1 until mcclaren tweeked the p1 and put sticky tyres on it..

James, this is incredible. The 918 has always been my personal favourite from the trinity of HyperCars. Is there any chance you could get your hands on the Mercedes 190 Evo for your modern classics series? If so I’d love to see and hear your take on it

Great video on the 918! I think I can almost imagine sitting in one! one thing I suggest, If your audio is heavy on one side (when you first got into the car) try using mono sound to reduce headache.
Agreed, James. I’ve never loved the look of the 918, and now I understand why. Most examples have all of the fussy stripes and decals which detract from the overall shape and essence of the car. This particular example is stunning! The simple shade of gray really highlights the shape of the car. It lets the design speak for itself, and it really looks fantastic. Plus just a few tasteful splashes of color detail. By far the best-looking 918 I’ve seen.
It makes the aventador look the bargain of the century.

I have a real soft spot for the 918. It basically does everything you want in a car from the usable e-mode to the screaming V8 with top-mounted exhausts to the all wheel drive system to the targa top.

Excellent well balanced review. I'm not a fan of the whole hyper/Super car genre as they are practically useless for normal road use. Breath on the accelerator and you're going too fast, but..., if I ever found myself in that income bracket, the 918 would be the only choice for me. Brilliant car and all the better without the Weissach package.

Best car ever! It ticks all the boxes for me: AWD, N/A engine, E-mode, removable roof, impeccable design. This is the perfect recipe for all future cars. Electric cars aren't the future, hybrid cars are!

Very nice spec with a unique interior 👍 I also prefer the non Weissach pack look. When the wing is down, it has a nice flowing sculpture of the body. It might be little less sexy and flashy than P1 or LaF but it is still Porsche at it’s finest 🤟

Love V8 Hybrid powertrains, the best of both worlds. No wonder AMG and many other manufacturers are working on their own V8 Hybrid powertrains.

The drive selector/gear lever on the dashboard is like a tiny version of the new 992 gear selector.
This is the greatest car of all time. It even surpasses its predassesor the carrera GT.
My least favorite one of the 3 hypercars. But I would probably buy this one... It is the best daily driver because of its electric range, and the least likely to kill me with its power.

Interior is McLaren only. Ferrari’s steering-wheel is overcrowded, and distract from the actual driving.

My favorite Porsche and one of the best cars ever engineered . Ultra performance to me is more important then sound. Any car can sound good but mind bending performance that's alot rarer. Still the car sounds good too

Anyhoo. Was wondering if you had an opinion on the cayman R (and other models) steering wheel. No gizmos, just two flappy paddles. V v odd. The 918 wheel is a beautiful thing, as is the rest of the car. It makes Ferrari wheels look a little, em, garish? I suppose that lovely (not) red interior makes up for the lack-of-taste competition.
Ps. Saw an 80's turbo with pop up lights. And two la ferraris. And a veyron. And two gt3s. In one garage. Oh yeah, and around 8 new lambos and two mclarens. Now i have to hatch a cunning plan to create lots of money very very quickly.
In my view Porsche are in a different league. Of the three holy grail cars - La Ferrari, P1 and the 918...... the 918 is leagues apart. The P1 is a track car anyone who says otherwise is talking tosh. The Ferrari - way too fragile. The Porsche is pure genius through and through more robust. Of the three marques Porsche’s racing sports car/GT pedigree is by far the strongest. Sorry McClaren - apologizes Enzo.
I am and always been in love with the 918 and the p1 , but quit franckly the 918 without the WEISSACH package looks inferior . don´t ask me why ! i think all 918 must have the WEISSACH package . but still great video as always
I recon now U should give the new 2019 NSX a go first of all because it's a what the 992 hybrid gonna feel like turbo engine with electric assistance so once Porsche will do it to the 992 U will have a good idea how they compere. Secondly the tick is similar to the 918 with its driving modes and I think interesting car that many people do not get cause thay R just looking at the performance numbers.
Not enough justice was done for this car...until this video came out. Even my profile picture speaks out for my favourite car.
Enjoyed that...not as much as James did! That’s an awesome car. My M6 is in yet agin for warranty work and I’m thinking Panamera e-hybrid as a replacement. This video has only edged me closer to that call.

I wonder if these hybrid engines from the Porche 918 to cars like the BMW 330e have issues with people going from electric to putting strain on a cold engine will do them much damage that surely cant be good for cars like these to go from cold to high revs.

How does the warmping up of the petrol engine work? Imagine you doing 20-30 miles on electric and then you demand a bit more and petrol engine jumps in but it is totally cold and it is not good to rev it.

I've only just realized that this engine is quite similar to the one in the 458 speciale on paper.
458: 4.5l N/A V8 610hp 9000rpm
918: 4.6l N/A V8 608hp 9000rpm
My first thought was that it sounds like a 458
