    This made me almost cry. People don't know how much goes into learning to draw and seeing your progress is so inspiring. It's like we are on the same journey but you are 2 years ahead of me. There were even sketches you showed I have the photo reference of saved on my computer ready to draw.

    • @canilearntodraw2579

      Hi Grant! You are so right. It’s hard to understand how much goes into this progress. Even showing these pages still doesn’t capture the emotional struggle and the time spent. I almost wish I had recorded the time spent as well … I draw pretty slow. But glad this is inspiring for you. I just hope people don’t compare and get discouraged without understanding just how much time I put in during these months. And it was very focused learning. I don’t think that the average person will do what I did. But it shows from my experience is the only thing you have control over is showing up and scratching on the paper … when you see progress is not completely up to you … but it will happen if you stick with it. One day you will look back and go … oh wow that wasn’t as long as it felt going through it. Can’t wait to see how things turn out for you.

      Hi artifacts! What I like to say is talent in the end just turns out to be hard work you didn’t see. People use to call my brother talented all the time because he learned the piano by himself … but they didn’t see all the nights that my parents had to tell him to go to bed because he as still practicing and they wanted to sleep. Someone said it takes years to become an overnight success. It’s hard work in the end … that’s why it’s valuable. The trick is to enjoy it so it doesn’t feel as hard.

    This is so inspiring! I'm only eighteen, but looking at people my age or even younger who are already at a professional level in drawing, I've been feeling like it's too late for me. Like I'll never be able to catch up, no matter what. Seeing your quick progress, and especially seeing you explain and break it down really makes it feel like something I could accomplish as well. Thank you for making these kinds of educational and reassuring videos :)

      @canilearntodraw2579  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hey Aya! Glad I could be an inspiration for you. The good news is that even if there are persons around you that are awesome already, you don’t have to focus on catching up with them. That’s a sure way to get demotivated. And likely that’s not what you meant but I just needed to put it out there for others. Its just one small baby step at a time. Slow and steady will win you the race. It’s the consistency that wins in the end. And the good thing at your age you have time on your hands. Best of luck on your journey. If you ever have questions feel free to reach out.

      Hey Amari lol 😆 yes watching videos alone will not get you there. But I love needing out on new information and ideas. And I do find little tips that are helpful in them … but ultimately there is no way around hard work. I have found that also you can learn something and then not use it an totally forget it. There seems to be a fair amount of taking 1.2 steps forward and one step backwards. This is why finding joy or drawing what you like is so important. If it was easy everyone would be able to do it … we’ll there is AI now so … 😳

    I've watched many Kim Jung Gi vids and read all the translations I can. Don't forget even for him at first he said he had to draw what he saw over and over and over and over again. It took him years and years to develop both his visual library and visualization skills enough to be able to "just whip it out".

    I started 7 months ago, on and off, not really structured drawing, I got better surprisingly and this video made me realise that I should start focused drawing now, I am not a complete beginner(when I first started I drew like a 1st grader and I am not kidding), I have ideas of what I need to learn, I have good hand eye coordonation formed now, I can do what a fresh beginner can and some figure/gesture/perspective but I didn't really study these, I just learned from 5 minute videos or 10 minute videos, and then repeated when I could, I really need to do proactive drawing, ADHD kinda hinders that and I know that it's gonna take me about 3-4 years to get to what you sir got in 2(probably) but honestly I am not here to compare to others, I am here to have fun and your advice still applies to me, I just need to find a way to get my ADHD and bad habbits out of the way so I can follow it, thanks for making the video, also quick question, I am 19 and have tried to do art and learn at the age of 14 but couldn't learn any technique, do you by any chance think that your age and wisdom on learning has helped you in any way on your journey? I personally find myself finding the things I used to think were difficult when I was younger mildly annoying these days, sorry for the wall of text. (I also started working out so I really want the future different looking me to have different looking art aswel)

      Hi Coreo. Sorry to hear about you ADHD. But glad you are making progress. And your focus on fun and not comparison is great! That’s what I recommend as well. Sometimes easier said than done. Yeah I do think that being older is a plus in terms of how fast and dedicated you are in your learning (some young people are as well) but young people also have a huge advantage … time. The older you get with a family the harder it gets to put in the consistent time that is needed.

      Hi! This is a question that I get a lot. It took a lot of practice. I watch videos from many different artists like Stephen Zapata, Stephen Bauman, Proko, and Dorian Iten among many others. I don’t remember all and then tried to do what they said. It will take some time both to learn and to do on a project. Those drawings took tens of hours to complete. It looks simple when you flip through it quickly. But a. Lot has gone into it. Hope this helps. The moral of the story is to keep drawing and keep learning.

    ha, im also about 2 yrs but im the complete opposite in that I've been avoiding a lot of the rigorous technical work. Once I learned perspective and breaking everything down into shapes, I started drawing so much from imagination but have neglected deep dives into practicing convincing anatomy so all my stuff comes out stylized. You've inspired me to sit down tonight and just draw those twisting beans things for an hour.

      Hi Amogh! That’s exciting to hear that you are making great progress in just 2 months. I can remember that i was definitely NOT excited with my progress at 2 months 😆. So you are doing great. I have heard that there is a difference between the free videos and the premium videos and then that you really get less example drawing which I found was really good and helpful. However what it really comes down to is time. Even with the best materials there is no short cut to consistent practice over time. So if you can’t afford it don’t get too concerned. Just continue looking up good free material. You will get there.

      Hey Echo! Welcome to the journey! Excited to hear where you end up and glad I could be a small part of it. As it relates to sequence. Doing draw a box first is perfectly okay I think. There isn’t really one way to learn. So it really comes down to the person. If draw a box seems more exciting … they should probably do that first. If figure drawing seems more interesting then go with that. Either way the hard part is not choosing the correct sequence of courses, the hard part is putting in consistent effort and practice for an extended period of time. Best of luck on your art journey!

    The problem I have seen for years, is that people want to see results immediately.
    That's not how this works. We live in a digital world where we are exposed to a lot of pieces of drawings are created per hour. It doesn't matter if it's manga, comic book, watercolor even AI art, people ask to themselves: "Am I going to get to such level?"
    Yes you can but there aren't shortcuts. You need to learn the process.

      Making cleaner lines is something I need to constantly remind myself of. When you are drawing and trying to find the shape or right angle it is easy to fall into just putting your pencil on the paper and starting to make lines until you find the right one. But it normally better to think first, visualize and then make the mark. Guilty! Glad you are recognizing the progress you are making. Continue to enjoy the process.

    Wow! your progress is stunning! 8:29 are these animals from a specific course? and your pencil shadings at 23:27! where do you learn to shade like that?

    • @canilearntodraw2579
      @canilearntodraw2579  ปีที่แล้ว

      The animals from that time stamp is from the proko figure course. The shading was trial and error. Trying to copy what I saw others doing and a bit from Proko’s course. Think about it like coloring. I know some people struggle to get smooth coloring but it’s basically a lighter touch with the pencil angled much flatter as opposed to straight up. And then take your time. It really pays to go slowly when shading.

    I'm starting to draw a lot recently. A lot of these studies are done in realism but I don't really like realism. And from what you're saying maybe that's why you have a hard time being creative because everything is done in like such a realistic matter. Do you think it would be better to draw in a different style or should you draw in realism just to learn? Because I like comic Style and cartoons type stuff. Because everyone says you have to study anatomy and learn how everything works to exaggerate it. But if I know I don't like that style and I'm not going to use it should I still learn it?

    • @JH-pe3ro
      @JH-pe3ro 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Doing realistic studies is not really about the style, it's about the information in the drawing. As soon as you start putting something on the page, you're filtering some of the information from your reference, even if you attempt to copy it realistically. For the purpose of studying, copying what you see as accurately and completely as possible makes sense because it's easier to evaluate how well you understood your reference. It's actually really good practice for cartooning to first make a detailed copy of a reference, and then try to simplify it, because the first time makes all the details pass through your head and go, "oh, that's something I didn't notice."
      If you're focused on getting a stylized result, I suggest focusing on copying the images you already like using grids. This still teaches you to observe carefully, make good marks, and replicate shapes in accurate proportion, and it really needs to precede any of the more conceptual stuff because it's a huge source of frustration to try to copy things and not be able to get them looking the same. Think of this practice as "going to gym class" - it's just trying to strengthen a skill that you might already understand the concept of, and may even be successful using when you focus on applying the technique, but haven't used enough to bring into your comfort zone. Using it repeatedly and trying to gradually add challenge eventually makes it easy to access, and even boring...and that's when you can really get hooked on drawing, because then you will want to find a "next thing" to study and repeat the process.

      @@JH-pe3ro yeah that makes sense my problem is when I first did Art before I got good at copying then once I got good at copying because I was coughing realistic photos when I started to draw other styles I found it really hard to break out of that realism and find my own style I guess I should be doing studies of the art styles that I like after I learned to copy like you said

    • @canilearntodraw2579
      @canilearntodraw2579  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey William great question. While I am just a hobbyist I would recommend doing studies of more stylized works as well and see how they are exaggerating or changing things. Then incorporate those things into your drawing. Remember nobody is a master of everything. So focus on training the skills that get you closer to your goals. And those goals may change as you get better, which is okay just readjust. Knowledge of anatomy helps … but you don’t have to master it. Hopefully this helps.

    • @williammclean6594
      @williammclean6594 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@canilearntodraw2579 yeah I've seen some videos on the Italia method think it's called studying and replicating something exactly to train your eye and then being creative on the side studying balls at the same time.
      Because when I do just copying from photos I find it hard to break out of that and be able to like draw in the style that's not realistic. So yeah I guess I'll do that I'll keep doing studies based off photos and styles that I like.
      I'm doing a basic drawing course right now to learn the fundamentals but once I'm done I'm going to start an anatomy course

    Your videos have been so great to come across man. Your dedication is phenomenal. Disciplined and intent full progress. I can tell you worked so hard.
    I haven’t drawn with discipline for a couple weeks after drawing everyday for 4 months. I progressed a ton. But something made me burn out a little. Have you had burnout while doing these studies and if so how do you power through them? I tend to make a nice drawing or study and say wow I’m satisfied and then call it a session.
    Structure is what I struggle with the most. Do you pick a topic per day to work on? Or do you plan it out before hand and go off a schedule? I guess accountability for my art is something I struggle with.
    Love your videos man. I feel you can work full time soon as an artist with the progress you’ve been making. May I ask how old you are and why you picked up art? Thank you again for the great video

      Hi! Thanks for the feedback and complements! I do have goals in mind a lot of the time … even if that goal is just to have fun 🤩. Right now the overall goal is to get better at construction and using that to draw perspective scenes from imagination. So currently the hardest part of that is the figure. Spending most of my time there. But I’m a pretty organized and structured person. I love structure. So it works for me this may not work for everyone. The good thing is I don’t think there is one right way. If there was just one thing … it would be consistency over an extended period of time. Best of luck. Let’s see we’re we end up in a few years!

      @canilearntodraw2579  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Bambi thanks for the feedback it is much appreciated! In regards to your question I’m adding a link below to a proko video on this. However, like most things in art it is situational to what you are doing. For the more classic styles of drawing the overhand grip is common. But if you are drawing smaller it make sense to do the regular tripod grip. I now switch between the two depending on what feels right since I forced myself to learn the overhand grip when going through the proko course. It was difficult at first I will let you know that. He talks about it in the video as well. However, for some things you cannot use this overhand grip at all. Like drawing with fine liners, inking … you have to use … so again it’s one of those techniques that is good to know but will be used more or less depending on what medium you end up focusing for in your art. The stuff about drawing from the shoulder can be done regardless of the grip you are using. We were taught to draw using the shoulder in draw a box as well which used the felt tip fine liners. Hopefully this helps. Here is the link. th-cam.com/video/pMC0Cx3Uk84/w-d-xo.html

      Yeah … and I’ll tell you a secret 🤫 … although I learned the overhand and got pretty comfortable with it .. I hardly use it anymore 🤫 … that’s between us. There is a definite stylistic effect you can get with it that looks really cool … but not as useful for me right now.

    I wish i can address you by your name but, thank you for this video. I've been drawing for about two years now and i've been improving to a great amount. I have some amazing ideas for drawings and short stories that I can't wait to make come into fruition but my perfectionism stops me from learning the things I need to achieve that. My anatomy is decent but i haven't touched a portrait course ever out of fear of learning such a complex topic. The face. The desire I have to achieve greatness is immense, I just need to let go and DRAW :D
    It's a tough journey but it's one filled with a lot excitement and growth. I'm currently relearning the fundamentals and have noticed how much i really missed out on. I'm taking my time with it and noticing how I haven't learned all of them. It's funny too, I used to hate fundamental drawing and i swore i would never enjoy perspective drawing. But who would have thought, i enjoy it now? It made me gain so much appreciation for art in general because of how complex It is to turn a blank sheet of paper into anything you want. And it all comes from your head. Art is my life and i will strive day in and day out to make something of myself with it.
    Thank you for this video. I tend to not watch videos this long but this is one of those videos that was placed on my recommended for a reason. To realize that this journey is not easy for anyone. But with my love for art, I haven't nor do i intend on giving up anytime soon. I wish you the best on your journey to greatness.
