Troy Grady has video on this. In short, it's the fact that because he hits his notes so heavily, his guitar+amp act as one big compressor and it simply overpowers any string noise. The signal created in the pickups by his playing is much stronger than any latent noise under it and the guitar acts as a natural filter. In even shorter words, he's incredibly good.
he beats the crap out of his strings, doesn't even mute with his picking hand and it actually sounds crispy and clean, theres so much stuff i will never know about guitar fml
When he goes and hits the strings up top, watch how he quickly rocks the palm of his picking hand across the top to quickly mute the strum. I have been studying his technique lately, and it's crazy to watch how he'll hit ALL the strings, Low E - G string, just to hit a note ON the G string. It has to be the "secret" sauce to Zakk's sound and some of his melodic nuances that few copy when trying to "replicate" his stuff. Personally, I don't hit all the strings in that fashion, but it's more of a fear of incorrectly muting and "lack of control" to ensure the other strings don't ring out. But I saw a lesson the other day that demonstrated a practice exercise similar to this, to gain control of your playing while muting. It basically alternated between muting a note while trem picking, and then every 4th beat striking it unmuted, and immediately back to muting without losing a beat. Do this while gradually increasing speed with your metronome or whatever you use as a time keeper, until you can do it in your sleep. Similar concept to this. Zakk does it with such control and speed it seems that he can play all this without muting with his picking hand, but he mixes fretting hand muting and picking hand with the speed of Vikings! lol
At first I thought someone covering the song. I was damn he really loves Zakk, even wears the same rings as him and everything. Then I realized it was Zakk.
Same. When he started beating the shit outta the strings while still being so precise though I realized it had to be him. Never seen anyone else solo so aggressively with such precision.
I've always liked Zakk's approach to picking. I find myself often trying to just pick the one string I want, but one of the best things you can learn as a guitarist is how to mute the strings you don't want speaking. Zakk does this quite accurately with his playing.
The way he grips his pick because of that damn thumbnail drives me nuts. I've tried to grow a long nail like that for fingerpicking but it totally screws up the way I hold a pick.
Still my favorite guitar solo of all time, thanks Zakk for unleashing this on the world, this album and pride and glory was the sound track to my high school years. Hendrix made me actually listen to to the music, Iomi made me listen to metal, Zakk made me actually go out, buy a used guitar and give it a try, Dime tought me to stop trying and start practicing with a purpose.

IMO, greatest Heavy medal guitar solo ever recorded, every note means something, it's simple but complex, it has space and texture, I just sounds like a guitar solo should, not too little or too much, it's just perfect. That's just a humble opinion from a person who loves every kind of music, from Amadeus Mozart to ZZ Top.
Brother, you nailed it. You even mentioned Mozart when describing the range of your musical tastes. I listen to everything too and am a musician myself. I've had moments listening to Mozart where I suddenly just comprehended exactly what he was driving for and had that mind=blown moment where I understood that he really was a genius. There are many faster guitar solos, many other solos that do many other things. But this is for sure the most perfectly composed guitar solo in my opinion too. There's so much nuance and style in the solo. The blues-inspired funky part in the middle is exactly like you said: simple but complex. So many little subtleties with the string bends and cadence and really a nice throw to the bluesy style, used innovatively in a heavy metal context. It's so groovy. The beginning has great powerful notes that he holds and feels. The final run comes in at the perfect moment, paces perfect and drives to the end with such force, without having to be overwhelmingly complicated. The phrasing of everything is perfect. He's singing with his guitar, not just playing notes.
You can tell Zak is used to playing this live at a faster tempo. It took him a few moments to settle down to the slower recorded tempo and get in the pocket. He is an amazing talent and he caught it so quickly.
First of all that vibrato...and then 35 seconds in and for a couple seconds. That raunchy, double note, down picked, palm muted spot.. Still one of my favorite sections in a solo and When he half step bends both notes with his ring finger fast and with a wide vibrato. Puuuuuure gold.

Zakk wylde is one of the most underrated pickers of all time. Aggressive when he needs to be, and look how smooth and efficient his right hand works on the last speed run.
