I met Mickey Thomas at a Club where they were suppose to play in San Antonio Texas. When i got to the club there was nobody there. I went up to the ticket booth and asked them if Starship was playing here tonite. They said yes. I bought 2 freakin tickets. They may have been the only tickets they sold. So me and my wife were waiting outside of the club by ourselves. Then all of a sudden a limo pulls up and we are thinking thats got to be Starship. Sure enough some guy gets out and talks to the people at the club, and was in there for about 20 mins or so. So me and my wife approached the limo and tapped on the back door. The door opens and its Mickey Thomas. He says are you guys here for the show. we said yes, but we dont know what happened to the people. He said it dont look good. So we introduced ourselves. He was happy to talk with us for a few minutes. I asked if he would autograph a CD cover for me, he said sure i ran to my car and got my CD and he autographed it. He shook our hands, and told us they were going to play in Austin the next day, so we went and got our money back at the booth, and went to Austin the next night. The show was great.
@Ghosttothepost I got to see him in 2002 at a club in Auburn Hills, CA. The stage was about one foot off the ground and I was standing right in front him. Pretty close up! It was a great night!
This era for the band with this lineup was nothing short of spectacular! Mickey Thomas and Grace Slick sound great together. Thomas was highly underrated and is by far one of the best rock vocalists ever....Grace Slick is phenomenal and the two of them together is good chemistry. This entire band is extremely talented.....

Don't know about Plant BUT my top five are Brad Delp of Boston, Mickey Thomas, who still sounds great live. Hasn't lost his touch at all. Steve Perry of Journey, Meat Loaf and Freddie Mercury of Queen who all sounded great live for the most part (everyone has a bad or off day) just like the studio version in there prime. I heard that sadly Meat Loaf pretty much all but lost his voice. I hope it ain't true but crap happens. I read that he didn't sing w/ any techniques which help to preserve the voice as well as sing good. He just straight sang. RIP Brad and Freddie.
Yeah, i was huge Judas Priest, Scorpions, ACDC, Zeppelin, Def Leppard, Aerosmith, BAD CO. and UFO fan when this album debuted in 1981. I loved it..... along with Journey and BOSTON. Perfect time to grow up. Such a huge blessing.... But, man....if went back in time, like the song suggest. I would meet a huge loving party of friends. The ROCKEN old DAYS!!
You know something? I always thought that Marty Balin and Grace were both great singer...just not together. I never felt that they gelled singing in the same songs. But Grace and Micky? My GOD! They sound so good together; I get chills listening to them on quite a few songs, this being one of them.
The guitar stuck out as primo. The vocals spot on and to see the comradery between Grace and Mickey was heartwarming. Piano chords like Jane kicked ass. They were feeling it at this time. Very good rock music.
You are right, I will no longer use the term under-rated. Mickey's voice vs Mick Jagger? Jagger is nails on a chalk board. Mickey is GOLD! Does that work?
I always admired how Grace was able to settle for singing back up and harmony vocals. True professional!! If you focus your ears on her parts you can tell she was still fantastic!! Idont think she got enough credit for the velvet texture she added to all those great starship songs!!
I admire her for that in Jefferson Airplane too. She always jumps out when she does background vocals and harmonies but you can also tell she's trying to add something to the song and not intentionally trying to dominate.
Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Starship, Starship: the names make no difference. What a great band, belting out awesome tunes like this treasure. To hell with the critics, like Rolling Stone rag, attacking some of the greatest pure singers in rock and roll history.
This is one of my favorite songs and performances by Starship. If I remember correctly, one of the cast members at the end of the show said Grace Slick's father passed away hours earlier, but she didn't want to let the band or audience down by not performing. True pro!

Interesting how the 60's San Fransisco pyschedelic band Jefferson Airplane morphed into the mid 70's Jefferson Starship with the Martin Balin hit songs, and a soaring new guitarist Craig Chaquico. Then came the late 70's/early 80's version with power vocals from Georgia boy Mickey Thomas, (originally replacing both Balin and Grace Slick as the primary vocalist), two great additions from England in Pete Sears and Ansley Dunbar, the return of Grace, and as always, the founder, Paul Kantner and bassist Frieberg. Powerful band.Too bad things things got ugly around '85.
Mickey had some pipes! I just wish Grace sang more in this... she could still belt out some awesome vocals. One of the best female singers of all time.
I believe they'd already cut this track when she came back to the band, she'd left and came back while the album was being made. She might have been in jail, this was right about the time she was chasing some cops around in her front yard who came to her house responding to a call from someone about a disturbance there. She was a card back in those days that's for sure.

@Hal70jordan Grace never said she hated being in Jefferson Starship. She originally formed that band with Paul Kantner. She did state that she did not like what the band Starship became.

From 1975 till the late eighties I seen dozens and dozens of rock concerts From 1975 to the late eighties And in my own opinion doesn't get much better live than starship They put on one hell of a show.
The song sounds better and better as it plays. The guitarist at 4:05 is highly skilled. Was in San Francisco watching Joe Montana winning the Niners First Super Bowl in 1981! What a lot of fun!🙂❤️
They sounded great back then, especially with Dunbar on drums! My brother saw them live back in the summer of 1981 during that tour and they were the Headlining act but the opening band (.38 special), according to my brother, blew them out, and the crowd was booing JS at one point! 😮
Mickey Thomas sounds exactly the same live as in the studio. Wow. Can't say that about many people today, especially w/ autotuner being a rampid requirement everywhere it seems. You hear a concert on YT of a newer singer and they don't sound the same as the studio version. Mickey, Grace Slick, Paul Kanter, Anysley Dunbar and the rest of the gang do.
I saw them play in person, not on a 3x6 inch phone😂. Back when our social media was going to the lake with everybody and everybody talking to each other having a good time. This generation now is so lost in their phone Man they don't know what they're missing They never got too experience just life without being told which direction to go by a little screen
Watching this again....wow! Just an awesome awesome awesome live performance of an all time great song. Mickey's flawless voice and Craig Chaquizo makes this with his amazing guitar work here. I never get tired of listening to this.
Excellent performance by musicians who are good at what they do! Definitely a contrast to many current musicians who need auto-tune and backing tracks. I only recently realized that the drummer, Aynsley Dunbar, has played on some of favorite bands/tracks that I learned on drums. He is also played with Zappa. Just listen to how he plays with authority when he comes in at 0:40 and 1:38. Too bad he never got to tour with Whitesnake for the Whitesnake album.
And this, kiddies....is REAL music. No auto- tune, no voice or instrument overdubs. Raw talent=epic proportions. Carry on.

Agreed ! Saw Starship 7 or so years ago. Mickey's vocal power and clarity was unbelievable, still. Talent!!!
One of the most powerful voices in music. Up there with boston in my honest opinion.
I use the intro guitar riff as my ring tone.
That's awesome 👍
This video has the lovely feel of the 80s almost. ethereal.
😘50yrs in the music Industry. This is one of the best live performances
Great music great band!! You'll never hear another band that sounds like them!
I raise my glass to Jefferson Starship
Badass! The whole band is great. 👏
i play this at least 2x a week. it stands up big time. cheers
I listen to this daily.
God its been a quick 42 years..still love those guys
An excellent performance of an excellent song.
I miss my youth
No doubt about it. Their best era of all.
Best song ever! Damn these dudes could bring it!!!!
Grace's backup at 2:11 is killer
Me and my lovely wife went to see Starship when we were Young and still going out on the town, love you Cindy
Great song and performance!
