Chris Chatham the guitar player was one of the writers along with Tim and Austin, and his guitar playing is beautiful. I've heard a couple of fans recordings of this song in concert and it sounded to me like Adam's "harmonica" was more to the fore, and I really enjoyed that because his playing really rips your heart out.

I realize that mainstream FM radio is not the way that many people get their music fix these days. But, this song is better than most of what passes as country music today. They should be getting airtime with many of their songs. The guys know how to take you along for whatever ride they're on in their music. ❤

I very much enjoyed this song. HF has this way of tugging at your heartstrings with their music. I understand your comment regarding the harmonica/guitar mix. Adams no-monica almost sounds like a steel guitar (crying guitar) more than a harmonica to me. I'd love to see him work towards picking up that sound & yes, lighten the acoustic guitar.

I actually like that the nomonica is a bit more in the background. It’s so hauntingly beautiful and the fact that you have to listen for it makes it almost mystical.

This is beautifully bittersweet. It heals an American hurt that’s difficult to express. The lyrics - they’re an intimate, personal expression of a single soul. There’s just something about these men and their music that touches the spirit.
Home Free, somehow, has the ability to break the rules. They can add an instrument and still feel a capella. Chris Chatham on guitar was just the right bit to add. His playing was just enough to augment, but not too much to distract.
    Damn, these men are good.

Another great original song! This is such a beautiful heartfelt melancholy song. Tim's lead was awesome along with all the guy's harmonies & Adam's harmonica sounds were great as usual (could have been louder). I don't mind having an instrument played once in awhile in a song. It was tastefully done in the background without taking over. It added a nice element. Also like the scenery in Colorado.

A song so wonderful. A masterpiece. The harmony is just always perfect at Home Free. A good choice to do it with a guitar this time because that's just part of it. Then Adam's no-monica which can be heard at exactly the right moments. Not too overwhelming. Yes, as I often say: Home Free is not only hearing the music, but also feeling it.

Fair assessment, it's not often you will hear a musical instrument in Home Frees songs, other that the instruments provided by Adam Rupp.
Chris, the guitar player, has been part of the Home Free support group for many years, so as a way of thanking him for the many years of service to the group, the guys decided that a way of thank him would be to have him in this song, playing his guitar. I think it was a great decision, and I think you might be right about dialing down the guitar sound and/or bringing up Adams No-Monica sound.

It made the harmonica sound haunting to me. It might have been better if we could hear Adam in the places where the video shows him playing but we can't hear him, but maybe not. I am so used to 'hearing' various instruments when HF sings that I only notice the guitar when the vocals stop.

Yeah, I found myself straining to hear Adam's "harmonica" so I get you but still, I really like the guitar with this particular song.
Have you listened to their cover of 'Ain't Going Down til the Sun Comes Up'? Adam goes absolutely nuts on that one! Bet you'd love it. The audio is here on TH-cam but they had to put their official video on their Facebook page to avoid a Garth Brooks copyright strike or something. Well worth the time to find it. Complaint? … perhaps, or perhaps another surprise at the unexpected.
Maybe a little more harmonica, but,to me, the guitar was the perfect tone and mood to the fabric of the song. I hear it as a, somewhat melancholy, reflection on the lessons that brought them to a “coming of age” turning point in life. The bitter/sweet memories, mixed with an underlying eagerness and excitement of taking the first steps on a new journey in life.
The mellowness of the guitar, with just enough prick of the harmonica from the past …. Perfect.

Great reaction. I don't consider what you said as a complaint; just a statement of preference. To be honest, I agree with you. I had a difficult time hearing Adam's no-monica because of the guitar. Chris did a good job on the guitar, but I also think it should have been softer. Beautiful and poignant song however. Always respect and appreciate your Home Free reactions. This brings up emotion no matter how many times I hear it. I'm not a HF purist (who are opposed to the inclusion of the guitar) but agree that Adam's magic is being lost. From what can be picked out, his nomonica even has a bit of a 'slide' effect. He's more seen than heard. (Rockin' the bandana and shades!). Chance makes his bass feel somewhat rumble-y. I've not detected it but one reactor commented he heard Austin...or perhaps Adam....layering in some 'strings.' A lot going on in what seems to be a fairly simple, melancholy melody. Deserves to be getting radio play.

As always, when Home Free wants to send a message important to them, they do it with artistry, passion, and authenticity. Here, they join Dolly Parton, Garth Brooks, (more recently, Reba McEntire) and others .... in giving us hope for cultural progress -- not just in the south, but anywhere in the country where a certain mindset leads to division, fear, and hatred of the "other." A great bookend to Everybody Walking This Land.

The faux-monica really added pathos to this song. I think it should have been slightly more prominent in the mix, but only slightly so, because it was the ethereal nature in the background, it portrayed the fleeting nature of remembrance that is the soul of this song. The guitar was beautiful and plucked at my heart strings, but the faux-monica was what touched my soul and emphasized the journey the lyrics drew us through. I have always loved watching your reactions, they usually portray your feeling about what you experiencing as well if not better than just words. Thank you for continuing to follow Home Free.

Sometimes there have been other people with instruments that are included in their video, Chris Chatham (with the guitar) helped to write this song along with Tim, Austin and Adam Wakefield. Home Free usually is singing just acapella in their videos, but I agree that Adam's "Nomonica" should have been turned up because it sounded way too nice and the guitar was a little too focused on and it overtook the vocals and Nomonica quite a bit.

Mike I agree with you on the no-monica and guitar.....but that's my only problem too. These lyrics are my story too, as I grew up in a traditional (well as traditional as it can be in Miami as opposed to other places) of being raised as your traditional Southern white boy. My father let loose with the n-word 100+ times a day, and until my mom's passing in 2011 she would say "colored people" (I never did hear her or her mom say the n-word it was always "colored folks" or "people"). I know she had no malice in it, she and Diana the cleaner who came twice a month, and they even went to lunch together a number of times and a movie or two together, she would still call her "my colored girl" even though Diana was only 4 years younger.....it wasn't done to be hurtful, it was just the way she was brought up. I think you understand.....but my upbringing I broke away from it once I was a teen and went to school with African-American & Hispanic kids......I lost my fear of those that are "different". So the words of this song, especially that 2nd verse that Chance sings totally resonate with me.

I agree....although I do love Chris's guitar. But without that haunting "no-monica", it wouldn't be as pretty. Of all the harmonica sounds Adam has done on previous songs, this one is my favorite. I think this is my favorite of their originals, even though I feel a little sad when I listen. I fear this means the group is leaving Country behind and changing their style. Don't misunderstand; I'm a Home Fry for life, but I will miss the occasional Country song. 😞

I understand why you would think that but they're not leaving country music behind. Country is who they are....at least 3 of them lol they already do every genre of music. I to am a home Fry for life 🤘🤠🤘

@@minneyruth I feel they are basic Country but sometimes want to adventure out. I just hope they don't go to far and lose their base. I feel none of us fans have to like every song they write or preform. Just my own opinion right or wrong. I LOVE THIS SONG!

I listen with headphones, and since the very first time I watched any video of this song I noticed Adam´s harmonica, I think they didn´t want that the harmonica takes a main part of the song, just a complementary one, but the acoustic guitar was complete necessary with this arrangement, if there were no guitar they had to modify the entire song
