It's weird how nobody has this problem when they're kids. It's probably because you're just stuck with the 4 games your mom bought for you and you really don't have a choice to see what you wanna play, so you come to really enjoy every single bit of those games. It's only until you have your own disposable income that this problem happens (It happened to me once I got a steam account LOL)

It doesn't work for everyone, but I've found that hunkering down into an experience is what's needed to get over a lot of mental hurdles. It's kinda like with any other type of work: The "getting started" part is ALWAYS the hardest part... but after an hour or two when you hit your flow, you're properly engaged. And even if you didn't necessarily have fun or enjoyed the experience, you at least feel good that you committed to something. Now, the exception to this idea is if trying to stick with something is making you absolutely miserable. If you're dreading returning to a game, or the story just... REALLY isn't doing anything for you, there's no shame in bailing from a game (or book/show/movie).
I love the quote by Reggie 'if it's not fun why bother', if I find myself being mad at a game I just take a step back and think I'm going to take a break or play a different mode/game because there really is no point wasting your time playing something that isn't fun for you any more
Couldn't agree more, I've noticed that I've started having much more fun with games after I stopped playing CS:GO and Geometry Dash, the two ones i kept playing despite them only giving me bad emotions
@@Fafr I stopped playing GD after becoming satisfied with my progress. I have no intent to ever spend hours of my life grinding Deadlocked, so I didn’t. Man, this video hits close to home for me. I have a huge backlog of games I haven’t even started yet (mostly from sales and/or impulse purchases [FOMO]), mainly because I know that once I do start a game, I’ll have to stay committed to it until I either finish it or reach a block. However, there have been times where I try to sit myself down and choose a game to start, and then decision fatigue kicks in until I eventually choose. But even then, there are times where I’ll close the game to finish a daily, and then get distracted by an old game (mainly Pokémon), then forget about the previous game. It’s a vicious cycle, but I’m trying to get better at it.
My main gripe with gaming these days is not even a part from the games themselves. It's the fact that the internet moves at such breakneck speed, that you really have to avoid any and all places if you ever want to experience things for yourself before you get inevitably spoiled by others, thus completely sucking the motivation to continue out of you. It's hard to stay in your own speed when there's this constant fear that some nolifers chose to spoil the entire story of Fancy McRPG that just got released yesterday. And the saddest part is that the mentoned lack of attentionspan in modern day culture only enforces this behavior. I'm talking "Why waste 80 hours of my time when I can just read all I need in a single Twitter post?" level of laziness.

Can totally relate to this problem, my backlog is so large I've lost track of it completely. I usually play round based games myself but what I like to do is pretty much a combination of round based games and the second method. I'll play some round based gamss for a bit at the end of the day and then I'll unwind before bed with a half an hour to an hour of a game with an ending. The only problem with this method is that I keep replaying older games and never playing the new ones
This was a very interesting video! I definitely know people like this. I personally play the games that I own 2 at a time and only start a new game once I beat one of them and then I put a new one in rotation. I love beating video games! Since no one but my wife and I really care what I'm playing, I just play whatever I want. This is how I enjoy playing.
I agree so much with this but also put your hair back to the three blobs of old design or I’m stealing your character, remixing it, and calling it my own!(oh well actually a remix is a original piece of work as long as enough effort is put into it… please let me do this!)
Happy birthday! I've noticed this trend where I kept buying games on sale and didn't play them so I had to put my foot down and just ONLY buy games I REALLY want to play. Games go on sale constantly, I needed to stop thinking its something that is rare for Switch!
Dude I got to 99% on forgotten land and quit because tilt-and-roll Kirby was PAIN. But like 2 months later I remembered I was close to 100% it. It took another 2 weeks to finish it.
This was amazing the new faces the change in the weather I swear everything a new video comes out I always look forward to something new in your vids even if it comes down to the smallest details and yet again amazing job as always madz :) (and happy birthday 🎉)
I think live service games are considered finished whenever you completed your "main objective," my main objective in BTD6 was to finish a map in CHIMPS. I did that, but I still come back to play it from time to time. Multiplayer games are never finished, and they're really only there to play with friends, it's not meant to be finished, just meant to be fun
I always spend a lot of time picking what game I should play next until I just give up and play nothing, or replay a random game on my Megadrive. This video inspired me to make an app that picks a random game from my library each day, so that I no longer have to choose.
I saw, as you pointed out, it depends on the genre of the game. Single player games: when you finish the main story multiplayer games don't have an end, same with party games MMORPGs also don't have an end since the game is updated constantly lifesim games also don't have an end, unless the game gives you an overarching task to complete (Animal Crossing and paying off your debt) As for achievements, I see them as an added bonus that is not required to beat a game.
Printed an image for every game I own and bought a board. Started focusing on finishing one and only one of them a month while fighting the urges to start a new one midway through. Pin it to the board once I finish it before the month is out and give myself permission to start a new one. Never finished so many games in my life since I started that process and it does feel just right! Although it's not easy to not boot up something else on a whim
Very interesting perspective on the backlog issue! My problem is that I really want to experience new games yet whenever I'm actually in the mood, I usually just pick up the same few games I've not only completed, but 100% completed so often that combining the amount of times it might legitimately be in the hundreds. I thought it was interesting you brought up Pizza Tower, because that's one of the main games I really want to beat. When I bought it in its first week, managed to unlock a few costumes, get some achievements, and got up to the 2nd world, but I haven't touched it since. I really enjoyed what I played and I really want to get to the final boss, but I never do. I want to break out of my shell and experience more games outside of the same few series of games, but I can never actually bring myself to play anything else for long.
I understand the feeling well. My backlog has nearly tripled in size after buying before the 3DS Eshop closure. Thankfully I’m making steady progress, rotating between a few games, old and new, at a time. Right now it’s Splatoon 3, Yokai Watch 3, Kirby Triple Deluxe, and jumping on Pokémon Scarlet whenever there’s a raid event going on or if I feel like shiny hunting.
I have several games started that I want to go back to and know I will still enjoy whenever I do, but no urge to rush to get to them. I simply need to pay attention to how I'm feeling today and pick the game to continue accordingly. Doesn't matter if I only feel like playing a point and click once in a blue moon as long as I remember where I stopped last time.
I hear you about the backlog. As a gamer for 40 years now, I'm a fan of so many decades-old series that I feel a need to play every game of, even the spin-offs. But in the past few years it's just been impossible to do it. At least I'm never bored. I'll never understand how people say "there isn't much to play on Nintendo platforms" when I can see that alone can keep me busy (even though I am a multiplatform gamer). I also don't understand how it's said that kids have poor attention span, but they can play a SINGLE game like Minecraft or Overwatch or Fortnite for literally years, when I would personally rather finish 100 different games in the same amount of time. And I'm a completionist, too!
This is how I felt with prey I don't think I ever enjoyed a game quite like that game and then I finished it and I felt empty it was super lame and I have no urge to go back to it cause it just won't be the same.
Not gonna lie this motivated me to finish some of my old games.. I can admit that reasons I don’t know of stop me from playing games from months on end, I thought it was just little motivation to play but when I played with friends it was fun again. Nowadays I barely have fun playing a game by myself, after my hyper fixation ends I slowly spend less and less time playing it.
3:03 You know things are getting real when games started falling from above and spontaneously appearing within the confines of your living room to the song “Swordplay Showdown” from Wii Sport Resort
To an absolute T, Solidarity my friend. I think that self-employed overworked content creator aspect might have something to do with it ;) The extra guilt for playing that one hour at a time you get free can't be helpful for us. Have been slowly getting better at tackling the backlog this past year by trying to focus on a few games slotted into the routine times I have to play them, like DS games at the gym on the stationary bike.
Honestly, I relate to this video a lot. There's a small handful of games I need to finish (Fire Emblem 3 houses, Shantae 1/2 Genie Hero, Bendy and the Dark Revival, etc.) but I just haven't had the motivation/time to, so I find myself falling back into games I've probably put more than enough time into (like Genshin Impact, Project Mirai, or Animal Crossing). When I have the motivation to play a game however, it hits HARD. Just recently, I took a Link between words with me to a convention and finished replaying the game in a weekend.
Madz, try finishing Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, South Park Stick of Truth, Pizza Tower, Mario Golf Super Rush, Pokemon Scarlet, and Sonic Adventure 2
Probably the reason you can never finish a game is just because there's just way too many games to play to begin with that it's hard to bring yourself to enjoy a game the whole way through Like if you had 10 videogames vs 1 videogames, which scenario do you think would you would more easily finish a whole game.
I just noticed that when you play a creation game (dreams, fall guys, elc.) You basically choose what style of gameplay you want, if you want a unbalanced bean falling left and right, or mabey a red ragdoll walking up to a blue one and killing it, THATS WHAT I RELISED RIGHT NOW
I struggle with motivation a lot of the time, whether it's because of low mood or procrastination, or even just too many things to do but unable to do them all at once. I have things I NEED to do like do my volunteering, walking my dog, eat, sleep, bathe, talk to family and friends. Then there's the things I WANT to do, watch anime/cartoons, check up on TH-cam videos, work on my own TH-cam channel, play video games, hang out with friends, find my path in life, etc. Everyday I don't do things I want, or unable to do the things I need to dovfeels like I'm wasting my life doing nothing. Most of the time it's, "Okay, I'm gonna do this today, then do that", but I just end up not doing them through lack of motivation. Point of this is, if you want to do something, go for it. We only get one life, so enjoy the things you enjoy whether they are small or big because it'll make you feel fulfilled in the sense that YOU did something YOU wanted to do and gaining a new expirence from it.
Havent watched the video yet but I love pokemon legends arceus, its my favorite game, I completed it, and (spoilers) after I defeated Volo and Giratina, I had to complete the pokedex to meet and fight Arceus, and so I did, 100% game, I shiny hunted for a while but theres no story or anything to do other than shiny hunt after you beat the game. Sure, theres side missions, but those missions are just random NPCs asking for help or needing a favor. And the story for legends arceus is amazing. I wish we got more story, or DLC, because we never learned of Volo’s backstory, at the Giratina statue before the final fight, he says things along the lines of “why must life be so unfair..” or something like that, and I wish we get more content in legends arceus after you catch Arceus and 100% the game.
The longest game I had in my backlog (which isn’t a lot) was Overcooked 2. Have you tried playing that game by yourself? 3:02 I also counted how many games he showed in his backlog… 62 And A Hat in Time came out in 2017!
Man, this is my exact problem. My husband gets after me for this lol. I do eventually go back to most games I get (sometimes years later). He just dislikes that I get them, play them a bit and then move on. I STILL haven't finished Elden Ring, despite having the mental drive to do so. He borrowed it from me via Steam sharing and finished the game lol. I bought it when it came out. I have executive decision disorder junk with a lot of things, though....
I relate to this so badly. I love playing a variety of games and it definitely gets overwhelming with all the games I’ve started and wanna get back to, new games I wanna play, and games I already am playing. Recently I’ve been more focusing on a select few games so I can enjoy them while not getting overwhelmed, as well as just have options of what I wanna play. So if I don’t wanna play one game, I can play another game I’m currently focusing on.
it’s unfortunate that many games don’t have replayability, once you’ve gotten the credits to roll there’s no real reason to go over it again besides completion, but other than that you’ve finished the story, seen the sights and are all out of a fresh experience
My way to go is: When I'm starting to feel a little bored with the game I'm currently playing, I take a break from that game. And then, when I build up eagerness for some more, I come back to that game and play a little more. That way, despite my attention problem, I reach the end of most game's campaigns while keeping them fun for me.
I can heavily relate, which is why I stopped purchasing them. My back catalog is heavily terrible to the point I just have them as collective items. I have such little time to play games, and finishing a game in my opinion is when the credits roll for the most part. Lastly I might be getting old that video games just does not interested me any longer. Happy birthday too.

That’s a smart way to go with the 2 games at a time! Glad you enjoyed the video!
2:20 STOP ATTACKING ME. STOP IT!
I agree so much with this but also put your hair back to the three blobs of old design or I’m stealing your character, remixing it, and calling it my own!(oh well actually a remix is a original piece of work as long as enough effort is put into it… please let me do this!)
Most unexpected collaboration ever. Great video to bring me back to my childhood games. Especially on the day before my birthday! Great video!
3:02 - 3:42 This part is really funny. The Wii Sports Resort OST is underrated.
Happy birthday! I've noticed this trend where I kept buying games on sale and didn't play them so I had to put my foot down and just ONLY buy games I REALLY want to play. Games go on sale constantly, I needed to stop thinking its something that is rare for Switch!
Happy Birthday! Love your videos man!
Dude I got to 99% on forgotten land and quit because tilt-and-roll Kirby was PAIN. But like 2 months later I remembered I was close to 100% it. It took another 2 weeks to finish it.
That tilt and roll level took me SO LONG it was painful
@@carlycarroll684 I KNOW
when i saw ori in the “unfinished games” part, my brain literally went “ope, ori’s there”
This was amazing the new faces the change in the weather I swear everything a new video comes out I always look forward to something new in your vids even if it comes down to the smallest details and yet again amazing job as always madz :) (and happy birthday 🎉)
Single player games: when you finish the main story
multiplayer games don't have an end, same with party games
MMORPGs also don't have an end since the game is updated constantly
lifesim games also don't have an end, unless the game gives you an overarching task to complete (Animal Crossing and paying off your debt)
As for achievements, I see them as an added bonus that is not required to beat a game.
Another super gaming video, Madz! Hard to imagine a video more super gaming than this :0
Printed an image for every game I own and bought a board.
Loved the writing in this video! Good job as always madz!
Thanks a ton!
At 3:02 a really catchy song plays and I want to know what it’s called because I can’t find it in the description anywhere
Been waiting for you two to colab ever since I found out you two knew each other, did not disappoint.
"Oh, Foekoe also just made a video about finishing games, what a silly coincidence!" Me 10 minutes ago (clueless)
HAPPY EARLY BIRTHDAYYYYY also great vid (cute mii fruit things lol)
Personally, every time I return to a game, I like restarting it, I like the “newfound” adventure as opposed to “where the hell am I, again?”
3:01 why was that bot kinda fire though on beat too
The collab we all needed. Thank you guys!!
4:07 the king is here
I hear you about the backlog.
It really hits you when 25% to 50% of what games Madz lists you've also dropped after playing 15 hours of it.
I absolutely LOVE how your characters hair moves to the mood he’s in!! I find it so unique ❤️
Probably the reason you can never finish a game is just because there's just way too many games to play to begin with that it's hard to bring yourself to enjoy a game the whole way through
Like if you had 10 videogames vs 1 videogames, which scenario do you think would you would more easily finish a whole game.
In the first minute 1:00 plays Bomberman Land touch music. It's on of my favorite games😊
3:25 I swear I remember this music from somewhere
Wii sports?
@@adil0028 yeah it's the sword fighting I remember now
Wii Sports resort sword fighting game in freeplay
If video games shouldn't be a chore, it should be an enjoyment like watching a movie.
@@DAVID-ANDERSON Very true my friend, very true.
Havent watched the video yet but I love pokemon legends arceus, its my favorite game, I completed it, and (spoilers)
after I defeated Volo and Giratina, I had to complete the pokedex to meet and fight Arceus, and so I did, 100% game, I shiny hunted for a while but theres no story or anything to do other than shiny hunt after you beat the game.
The Wii Swordfight theme when you’re fighting a 1v100 always hit hard
3:00 it's really funny to see this list and going from "Oh yeah, understandable. I get it" to "how can you NOT finish THAT game?" Every 2 seconds
The longest game I had in my backlog (which isn’t a lot) was Overcooked 2. Have you tried playing that game by yourself?
3:02 I also counted how many games he showed in his backlog…
62
And A Hat in Time came out in 2017!
Wow, at 3:00 you really showed how your animation has improved. I’m surprised from the improvement that I’ve seen sence 2020. Really good.
I like how foekoe is just sitting there looking disappointed the whole time
Man, this is my exact problem.
Story of my life right here. Most relatable is at 2:57
Yo madz, happy birthday, man. Hope you have a great birthday😊
Does anyone know what the music he used at 3:20 is?
Wii sports resort swordplay showdown
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MADZ
At 3:43 seeing lil gator game not being completed made me simply sad😢
I felt the same way with kirby and the forgotten land 😢
My way to go is: When I'm starting to feel a little bored with the game I'm currently playing, I take a break from that game. And then, when I build up eagerness for some more, I come back to that game and play a little more.
That way, despite my attention problem, I reach the end of most game's campaigns while keeping them fun for me.
Your animation has got way better!
Happy birthday too.
i am a simple girl: i see peppino, i click.
My backlog weeps because JRPGS are my favorite genre
