    Thankfully these kind of repairs exists to equal out the “floor full of parts waiting for orders in the mail” repairs. 😁👍🏻

    It’s amazing how many things can be fixed with a good cleaning and some grease

    Had this same problem on mine, though it was working then eventually got stuck. Good clean and some vasoline grease later, it's been working fine ever since.

    Oh, by the way I'd say that Bush in the tailgate is a mix of brass and bronze.

      @raf530i 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeap. Bronze/steel is a self-lubricating contact pair commonly used in journal bearings.

    Greatly enjoy all your videos thank you. Good job on the rear windshield wiper! Now please give that wagon a full on wash including door jambs. It would give the car back its dignity. Also change rear diff fluid cause no one ever does. Press on regardless

      Diff fluid is done! But yeah, I definitely need to clean this thing.

    Nice design BMW. Maaaybe. Don't you just love it when you "think" something that is different is over engineered.... only to find out you might have just over thought it all along. Saying this not to be negative at all. Saying it from true experience! Mostly because my choice in vehicles always seem to be the ones that don't have those YT advertised awesome repair manuals with all the detailed steps and pictures AND because I usually just jump in with both feet first. I am thinking time for a good buff and polish on that wagon is in order.

    • @PracticalEnthusiast
      @PracticalEnthusiast  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It definitely needs a buffing. I guess I haven't paid too much attention to how other manufactures have handled the rear wiper situation. I think they normally put the whole assembly in the door, even if the glass opens separately? I can appreciate both designs though.

    Need to try this on my 330i touring. I can hear something engage back there when I try and use the rear wiper but nothing moves. I haven't checked if there's any windscreen washer being released though.

    SimiChrome, Autosol or Wenol can be used on that shaft and bushing for finer "Polishing".......... There are "knock off "Scottbrite Discs" that can be mounted to spindles that you buy for the "Dremel" and other "rotary" tools that probably make polishing that bushing and the shaft a breeze. Yes, it may be a little overkill but less friction, less wear - especially on the wiper motor. Also I like Super Lube Grease - Silicon Based and "Plastic and Rubber Friendly" plus it has PTFE aka Teflon in it. Have you had any issues with the "Locks" opening and closing yet? That tailgate "switch" has been known to leak water and it "shorts out" at least with the e91......The tailgate set up looks very similar. Maybe the e46 Touring "escaped" that problem.

    • @PracticalEnthusiast
      @PracticalEnthusiast  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can't say I've noticed any issues with the lock operation yet or the switches. I guess I've gotten lucky!

      @@PracticalEnthusiast Mr Cuckoobox is, despite all the air quotes, correct. E46 wagons have rear glass opening issues, caused by a few things. One of which is a bad microswitch. Prying the cover off and spraying wd40 is a temporary solution, but it does work.

    • @chrisking6740
      @chrisking6740 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ...if your glass pops open on its own, or won't open.

    • @PracticalEnthusiast
      @PracticalEnthusiast  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@chrisking6740 good to know. I may give it a spray preventively.

    • @MrCuckoobox
      @MrCuckoobox 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@PracticalEnthusiast I would not open it up, unless it happens. Chances are that if it is not acting up, water is not in there and opening it to spray WD40 "you are going to invite it in" (Another air quote?). - The seal is working. My wife's 1999 e39 Touring, and both of the 2008 e91s all had this issue.....All with similar tailgate switch and wiper set up. The e60 Touring have this issue too. Another symptom was the auto locks opening and closing. We live in the Southeast where the Humidity is high through out most of the year which probably a factor.

    WD 40 isnt a lubricant like you said, its a water displacer, hence the WD.. Something else should be used for lube.

    • @PracticalEnthusiast
      @PracticalEnthusiast  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It actually works fine for the purpose I used it for. Also, I used grease to lubricate the assembly anyway. Not sure what you're on about.

    • @DowntimeMedia
      @DowntimeMedia 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      He used it as the lubricant for the scotchbrite. He greased it up after cleaning it up with the WD-40 and scotchbrite
