Reality is that there is no profit in transportation business either bus or truck. Depreciation cost of vehicle is not calculated in this. Maintenance was rs 3/km 10yrs back and tyres cost 150000 which runns around 1lakh km in trucks means rs 1.5 /km.
This is a very profitable business if you know how to do maths. You usually get 2rs per KM from each customer and having a 40 seater bus, that mean 80 Rs per KM for whole bus. If the bus runs for 500 KM per day, it will earn 40000 rs per day. Monthly you can calculate. This is just the earning from passengers, calculate the extra they earn through extra load they carry. It's a huge profitable business.

I have worked with many bus owners when people were still onboarding Online from Offline in 2004/05 The aggregators were not there and each owner was building their own online booking portals. This business is not very profitable if you follow all the rules as the bribes and permit problems are there in all states. Some operators were using the same permit for multiple buses as they had political patronage Some had multiple buses with the same registration etc to work around. State transport buses had lobby in some routes and private guys were harassed. Bus never had drop permits and round trip permits only meaning it is for tourism packages then. For example Mangalore Bangalore route has such a big lobby that prevents the trains from operating in the correct time and have prevented train routes to run profitably by making the schedule inconvenient for passengers. Many BJP ministers own bus routes and no one can dare to touch them . If some one with no political lobby this is not a correct businesss
Private bus lobby in Dakkshina Kannada and Udupi district is very high and ticket prices also has so much difference. But anyways people of that districts are always busy in communal fights😂

If i assume whatever he has told is true, its still a fairly profitable business. There are almost 36 seats in a normal sleeper bus. Taking his route of choice which is Ujjain to Mumbai, the minimum fair per seat is around 1400-1600 which come at one way trip 1400*36= 50400. Now assuming all the tickets were booked from e commerce aggregator which is again highly unlikely roughly 20 percent is deducted including gst and final figure comes at 40320. This is total revenue and he has told us the two way cost is approx 60000. Therefore, Around 10000 margin per trip and approx 20000 net profit in one day. Now, coming again, salaries he has told are not that high. These buses load some commercial goods luggage as well and separately charge for it. Come again who's doing charity??
