- From a man who has spent more of his adult life in a sleeping bag than in his bed, he had to learn the best way to spend time in the backcountry. His journey brought goats into his life and he has never looked back.
Meet Marc Warnke. A hunter who specializes in the use of goats, the greatest backcountry animal on the planet. He has been in the industry for over 30 years and is known as the Goat Guy. He sells goats, goat gear, provides goat training, and even offers guided trips into the backcountry with his own personal goats.
Step into Marc's shoes as he gives you an inside look into what gives him the advantage when in the backcountry.
We sat down with Marc for a podcast that you can listen to here:

Things I was not expecting at 2:07 AM: realize how painfully goatless I am
Ikr, I had no idea goats were this useful, I always thought they were bred for milk and meat
Better watch out it also isn't hard to have too many goats
@@swamp-yankee Seems like theres no such thing as too many goats.
@@CriticalSurvival0 a herd of goats can grow exponentially.
@@swamp-yankee youd never run out of dried goat and you can sell extra goats right?
Better hide this, Boston Dynamics is gonna be pissed if the army realizes we don't need their robots...
The difference is that you can park a robot indefinitely without it needing to be fed and watered.
@@paullangford8179 Also they can get a shot or two and just be repaired instead of dying
@@paullangford8179 The goats refuel in the field from.loval resources, while robots do not, plus they are self replicating, and can be used to produce liquid rations for the troops.
Their power plant converts biomass to energy and over the course of their service life, they are largely self repairing.
@@yagami1134
I don't think the goat/big dog niche is active combat, but rather the trecks in between.
A robot would be more robust than a goat.
Damage to it would probably be more than could be fixed in the field or easily ignored.
Goats would be squishy by comparison, but way cheaper and a wrecked goat could become a hearty meal.
If you can't fix your expensive pack robot in the field, your gonna have to abandon it.
You can't cuddle up with a Boston Dynamics robot, though.
This guy is breeding mini-trucks for the backcountry. Genius!
What about Rams?

@@scotmetcalf2745 Thanks for that....saw a movie where a guy was killed by a goat, I now think it was a Ram. Any idea the breed of these goats here?
Seriously! This guy and his goats are badass
*MY SISTER KEEPS GOATS* she watched this video and said "this is the perfect life for a goat, they would absolutely LOVE to do this. They love to follow you and the rougher the terrain the better."
I'm sold, is your sister married? and how many goats are we talking about? 😂
Really?
imagine you are lost in the middle of nowhere and then this guy show up with his goat gang
He'd save every one of us :')
Haha this happened with my Dad and I. We were hiking in the backcountry and stopped to catch our breath, and we heard this weird jingle coming towards us. It freaked us out because it was like nothing we had ever heard in the country before. Then one by one, five goats carrying packs came out of the trees and passed us with this guy right behind! It was definitely a motivator to keep going and one of my favorite memories while hiking.
And then he says: it is dangerous out there, take one.
Goat meat for everyone 🙄
"Take a look at my goods stranger"
I had to pause this video as soon as you spoke that vital piece of life's advice: "earn time, not money". You put into few words what I've been trying to do all my life. My sons have the same philosophy; oddly my daughter doesn't and works 60 or more hours a week. My sons and I want to work to earn enough so we can have time to do what we want. I've said it many times, "I don't live to work, I work to live." Living below my means has given me ample opportunity to spend time doing things I love: hiking, boating, fishing, camping, gardening.
We have our own herd of goats. I've always wanted to try them out as pack animals. While I knew goat's milk was good for humans, I didn't know it was that good.
Thanks for the wonderful images. You travel in beautiful country.
This man is what you would call, a practical genius.
So true! I raised goats for 11 years and would hike with them - if a strange dog or person showed up they'd just bunch up with me and wait for me to scare it off. They're also smart and can open gate latches with their lips. Fascinating and very social animals!
I just got 2 little goats from the goat guy. Out hiking the other day, they started acting wierd and staying right up against me. Couple minutes later, I see a dark colored cougar crouched under a tree only 30yds away. He ran before i could draw. Those goats told me something was there! I had no clue. Yesterday my little guy broke his ankle knuckle. Now in a cast. I'm sick. Just thought i would tell you all that lol
@@jeffallen62 Hope he heals up well - they are tough animals. Thanks for your story! Around here (central NC) we don't have cougars; feral dogs are the worst threat but some of them are scary. My neighbor owned a large horse farm and had dogs kill one of his colts. Happily between a strong night paddock, e-fenced pasture and a wonderful Akbash guardian I never lost a goat!
@@stacylewis2055I swear the reason I had more miscarriages the first year I raised goats was me not having a guardian dog. They trust him to evaluate threats, and he stays between them and scary things. It is so worth having a guardian dog...
Just wanted to say how much I appreciate the fact that you prayed over your animal. Most humans have completely lost all respect for animals. Call me what you will but I believe in that respect and I teach it to my son.
You're a good man, thank you.
Bears don't pray over salmon
I don't share this mans religion but greatly appreciate the prayer be included. Respect and gratitude for the animals we harvest is very important and something i am trying to teach my sons. Blessings in abundance but is easy to take for granted.
@@MrLleyo81 We are not bears..
Absolutely
You got me at: “when scared goats run towards you the horse runs away.”
Depends on how you train a horse
more of a funny comment than an actual fact :}
think war horses for example
My hunting dog does the same. He came zoooooooming in at my feet with yotes on his ass 😂 I shouldered my shot and they bolted
“And she just couldn’t handle carrying the pack”... “So now we’re divorced and I’ve been with the goats for some time now”
🤣🤣🤣🤣
LMFAO!
I love my goats so, so much. At first they were just to clear poison oak, then came milk, then came cheesemaking. Life changing. I am so thrilled to come across Marc and his beautiful goats. We now have more plans for our herd.
The American mountain man has finally caught up to the Afghan mountain man. Lol.

It’s been amazing to see all my influencers making content together. I subbed to Marc 5 years ago. I just watched a 3 hour interview with Shawn Ryan and Randle Carlson!!!! Life is good.
5 am here, been watching mark for a year since we got out first goats. My husband first saw a goat on a neighbors farm and convinced me to add a few to our homestead. Since then i have found goats to be the perfect pet and super easy to train and care for. Mark has convinced me, i may end up only owning goats as they can provide milk and meat for free or super cheap hay at least in comparison to other feed. Pigs can be free if you have space and ability to rotate them through seasonally grown fields. Horses and cows require special feed and hay and many acres. Being such big animals, they eat a lot. When it comes to packing, not needing to carry hay on you for the trip is huge. Being smaller goats that are more agile with toes instead of hooves they can navigate through areas a horse can't.
My grandfather from Kashmir,he always used goats when he went into the hills and mountains to trade, you're absolutely right about using the milk of this incredible animal..
Wow, what a random comment for me to run across. My grandfather is also... what part of Kashmir is your family from?
After a catastrophic knee injury many years ago, my knee has gotten progressively worse and now it just wont allow backpacking into the back country. I had considered pack animals but they have always seemed too expensive and aggravating until now. This video just made my day! Gotta get me some. Thank you so much.
So cool you're inspired! It's videos like these that need to go viral, right? Good Luck!
Cheers. Fun to see ya fired up.
What kind of knee injury? 25 and coming off a near full MCL tear and am worried how it will age. Thanks!
Gabriel E. Thompson, I severed my ACL and tore my MCL. Also tore my meniscus. I was though, fortunate enough to receive care from the worlds foremost knee surgeon at the time, a doctor Lewis Umverferth at Ohio State University. 30 years later Im very lucky to be hiking without having joint replacement.
i know im a total stranger but i totally agree you should get a pack goat and get back out there again! :)
We’ve reached a level in life where pets aren’t based on energy->work. This man devolved enough to have a use for goats, and I’m jealous.
Eh, kind of a point of a dog is that he wants my attention and wants belly scritches
I agree. Reducing everything down to energy expenditure is a sad way to live.
How is it devolved in anyway? Goats are awesome, besides carrying luggage, you have a mobile meat station incase you cant hunt lol
As an owner of a few goats, I love seeing them being put to work. Goats also have a unique sense of humor too. Great stuff sir.
Could you give an example of that? Never thought of them as having a sense of humor.
Growing up I spent every summer on a 3500 acre ranch. Goats do have a sense of humor. They'll try to push you off the small rock your standing on, steal stuff from you, and have all sorts of shinnanigans up their sleeves; or rather their hooves. Goats are very loving and they like to be petted. They follow you around everywhere. Love goats.
@@e66ninja59 thanks! never had that idea of them, never been around them
@@goncalonunes985 our goats will act like their horns are stuck in something to get attention.
I have Alpine goats and I absolutely love their sense of humor they love to play all the time! And when they really get going and jumping off things it's so entertaining to watch especially when they're bouncing around and spinning at the same time and then hitting horns they are just awesome creatures!😊
I love that he doesn't have them on a line; they just follow him.
Yes! Shows that they have a relationship based on trust :)
If he crosses something they are unsure, they will probably still follow because they trust him and not because they get dragged over on a line.
Plus, it would probably be dangerous for them to be on a line. If one would fall, they would all go down together.
In Afghanistan our B Co. guys used a lost donkey they found and adopted to carry ammunition and supplies up to their OP. We had a camel wander onto our combat outpost and were planning the same thing but a local guy who was the owner came and got him. We need to use more animals ! Really cool video and smart dude
Blame Gaius Marius. Its that bastards fault.
We did something similar until our CSM came out and saw we had animals (in a bombed out building) and made us get rid of them or disposed of them
What BN?
I am lucky enough to not see combat. We never trained using animals to help us. The only down side I can think of with a animal is loosing one. Once a enemy attacks the animal. Where I could have a Mechanic repair a vehicle. Is there even a vet MOS?
@@xPumaFangx there isn't a vet MOS but Medics do training with animals
Me: I don't need a goat. I live in an apartment and don't go into nature.
Also me: The goat is the ultimate back country companion.
💸💸💸🐐🐐🐐
How are your goats doing now? :)
This is AWESOME! Our family used to spend 6-8 weeks in the High Sierras every summer, but due to a disability I haven't been able to for over a decade. These precious little four-legged helpers are exactly what I need. I'm almost 60 & have wanted a goat since I was in my 20's: We live in SoCal, but there are MANY pockets of unincorporated areas where ppl have chickens, sheep & goats, and a good friend had one growing up. Also, one of kids had to have only goats' milk bc of an allergy to cows' milk. Thanks for a GREAT video! (PS. Loved how he prayed over the elk)
We were hiking in the Sierra Nevadas when we were passed by a guy and his pack-llama. I thought *that* was genius. This is better.
Alpacas are a good compromise. Much More like dogs or goats. Also they get along with goats!!!
I don’t see how this is genius, literally people have been doing this for centuries.
@@fdd7002 Have people been doing this in modern times for recreational hiking? No? So, yeah, recognizing the applicability to modern hiking and hunting is genius.
@@sillyquiet what you mean no, horse back rider and people have been doing this for ever, for both work and for recreation. It’s almost literally the only reason why most people have horse now a days because a vast majority of horse are not use for work. Also people that need a caravan just to go hiking are people that just have way way too much stuff because it’s not pretty obvious you don’t need that much stuff to go hiking for weeks because people do it all the time.
Pack llama makes good sense; it can do pretty much everything a goat can do, and it can take a much bigger load, including its own food.
Legit one of the most interesting thing I've seen in ages. 👍🏻
0:14 The goat chewing makes it look like a hardass veteran chewing gum
Goats chew their food twice.
This guy transported two goats to us in our state two years ago from the Midwest. Great goats. Cool guy.
What did you name them?
Great video! Goats are fun. My sister-in-law had fainting goats. They kept us laughing like crazy. 😆 She got my sons each a Nigerian dwarf. They are really sweet. My doctor just took me off of regular dairy and onto goat's milk. I thought it was going to be toi weird. In the past, I'd had goat cheese and that was it. But, damn, the butter they produce is fantastic! The yogurt is great too. It is expensive as Hell though. $16.99 a gallon! The change isn't because I'm allergic. But, he said cows milk can cause inflammation. I was in a head on collision years ago. And he said this should help with the arthritis. Hey, I'll try anything at this point. Too bad goats wont eat people. I'd love to feed the guy that hit me to them. 🤭
Working animals are a huge blessing. We would never have made it this far as a species without the skills to tame animals.
Love this video. I appreciate your respect for the elk you shot for food. Goats are incredible animals. I have a dairy goat. The cats dog chickens and pigs all love goat milk. It can save any baby that has lost it's mother too young! I have been wanting to do this for some time. Also, train my goat to pull a cart if hiking becomes too diffucult! I have packed my goat around the yard. She took to it no problem. Where do you get your packing supplies. I agree goats are very low maintenance. I have only camped with horses. Tie out with highlines. Graze with hobbles. Experienced horses do not usually run from danger they stay with the herd or leader. Yes they are higher maintenance but carry much more weight and are much quieter than goats. They would definitely be a plus getting that elk back to camp! If you haven't seen it yet, please watch War Horse

Lots of respect for this guy. First for his wisdom and second for his amazing pragmatism. His decisions appear to stem from intense thought over a subject and always geared towards maximum efficiency. At the beginning I was wondering if this approach would interfere with being in a relationship, however that was thankfully put to rest in the second half of the video when we learned he was married and had children. Obviously his wife was completely simpatico - that or his powers of persuasion are equal to his pragmatic abilities. I agree with the comments below, I could have listened to this guy for an hour. I'm sure he has much more to say. Great video.

Very informative but i gotta say the best part was the open prayer right after the takedown! Amen brother!!!
Thank you Marc.
I think his preference towards goats is more one of convenience than an actual "like" for them. He chooses to spend 1/2 a year, or more, in areas that are hard to keep a dog, therefore, to lighten his burden, he sought out a four-legged companion that was naturally built for that lifestyle. Dogs have other purposes, and being a pack animal is not one of them. Aside from that, much props to him for living the life he chooses to live, and not trying to adjust his life around his "job".
Dogs are very much, naturally pack animals. Just a different type of "pack". Lol! The goats are much more advantageous for his needs, for sure. If you spend any time around goats, it's impossible to not like them. They're hilariously funny to watch at times. Great animals!

@@teddy130 they absolutely drink water. They, for lack of a better description “suck” up their water. To me it looks kinda funny when they drink.

I appreciate how they still have their horns, good to protect themselves if they need it
You realise we dont usually cut goat horn ? You acting like this is special to goat to still have their horn.
Horns are used for social purposes not survival purposes. They don't fight predators, they flee.
Also, disbudding (removal of the horn bud via burning shortly after birth) is standard practice in dairy breeds

An angry goat chased me up a tree at my grandparent's farm around the same age, haha. I remember my grandfather coming over, grabbing him by the horns and throwing him down and sitting on him so that I could come down, he was an ornery guy! (Well, they both were, haha)
Brilliant!! We have miniature horses, and for sure, not a backcountry type! Love the minis though, but with that said, have always loved goats as well. Your story is inspiring in many ways. Kudos to you on ALL of this!! Very glad I stumbled across your video!!
Dogs helped us hunt and find food when we did not have food. Great video. Great idea on the goats and great video.
Another thing about horses, and I say this as someone who likes them, is that a horse will generally choose any other nearby horse over you. If you're in a group of horses and they decide to break left, you're going left unless you've got the muscle and familiarity to wrestle your mount's head in a different direction, and even then it's going to be a struggle to keep your horse from rejoining the larger herd until you get far enough away from them.
Most certainly has made me rethink goat ownership. Brilliant thinking. Love this video.

I'm a dog owner and definitely disagree with him on the dog bit but I think his reasoning for his relationship with goats is great and makes sense for his mission and purpose. And no I didn't dislike this video, I actually liked it and went on to listen to the full podcast as I've been researching goats for several years.
This was awesome, I really liked that he gave a prayer of thanks for his big kill.
I've been a city "armchair survivalist" for over a decade, this is the coolest thing I've seen....congrats!!!!
Remeber preppers are crazy to think a pandemic with riots and looting would ever happen.
This is awesome. 11/10 would recommend.
A horse will run back to the truck. Horse~"Sayonara sucker!" 🤣
Marc I relate to you and in 10 minutes you became my inspiration!
Goats have so many to give andnis highly intelligent...
👊
i love how logical this guy, he definitely does a lot of thinking.
Best episode ever
Wow, amazing to see he still has the time to give thanks to the ALMIGHTY.
This was so compelling of a reason to keep at least 3-4 happy goats on the homestead
for some dope yearly hiking buddies and long haulers!
Badass video! Marc is a good dude.....anytime I have ever reached out to him he has always responded with kindness.
👊👊❤️
Oh my God... This video has totally changed my mindset on pack horses. I love you Field Craft for this wonderful nugget of info.
I'm just scared about the goats deciding to ram me near a cliff.
If you raise them properly or buy a trained/manered goat, that wont be an issue
