The reality is without people actually being held in jail and held accountable in court it doesn't matter how much resources you throw at it. Crime and garbage will always be the picture of Seattle and the surrounding area. But god help us we actually have someone in a position that matters and doesnt care about hurting people's feelings. Criminals are not victims, they are criminals!!!! Arresting a transient for a crime is not criminalizing homelessness its holding people accountable for their actions, its that simple.

    • @MoltandMigrate

When you say "criminal," are you actually talking about people convicted of crimes after a speedy and public trial, or are you just talking about whomever the police decide to confront at gunpoint in the street?

When I see people complain about Seattle being dirty and crime-ridden I always think, "this is a person who has lived in Seattle their entire life."

Incompetent losers who let landlords lie and injure renters. They look the other way as paying renters were forced into homelessness, have their belongings taken or killed. It’s kill or be killed it seems.

Hiring “other responders” sounds like very similar to the “arming teachers” situation. When the people that are supposed to protect us fail they want others to pick up a responsibility that shouldn’t have to be in their job description, and likely without a pay raise.

Usually are not the same people! Even in Seatle there are ~741 251 people (2020)... even if there are 25 000 saying defund the police, cut the police size or just shut down police altogether... well there are all other 716 000 people that may not have the same opinion that having less cops is a good thing... probably if people were asked, they would want much more police to patrol everywhere including their street.
Seattle city should have around 7413 police officers (~1% of the population)... they just have 968 police officers.
Once they reach the 1% of population level, I agree that they should invest in all other things like health help, and all other things.
These idealist don't get that in the real world either you have a strong police force to stop the worst offenders and prevent most situations, or you are not going to convince anyone to get better because who will stop them from doing the wrong thing ? Of course there all those problems with bad people working in police and the police having problems in taking those people down, but is the solution to just get rid of the police? If people stealing can't be just killed, and so many want that specie of humans well protected and supported... why can't the police receive the same amount of help to recover their bad humans working there?
