- In early spring the Pyrenees still have a lot of snow, so Mikel Sarasola went for enjoying some new lines while waiting that this snow melts into the rivers.

Anyone else think this was a really novel and genius idea until they remember that sleds exist?
Here in The True North Adventure we are usually surrounded by snow and the thought never crossed out mind! Going to be trying this out for sure! Thanks for the idea!

I like to still refer to it as Snow Kayaking just because you are going down in a kayak rather than a sled. I have gone down the hill near my house in both my kayak and a sled and I go much further in the kayak.

I expect he was up there first thing to avoid wiping anyone else off the slope. Good fun, but zero ability to cut any edges in to stop in an emergency!

When I was a kid, we simply called this "sledding".. ;)
Cept our plastic sleds had sharper edges and chines so we could turn better.

I agree with Jake.. the skiers were trying to slow down so they could keep back from this "sledder". Kayak is best spelled backwards... thats the only time its impressive.

ok, so someone that lives in western NC might call this "deep powder" and that might be different than what a person in the rock mountains or Canada calls "deep powder"...
anyway, my point was there is not that much control and it will not slide very fast if you try this on just a few inches of snow or just on ice...
A couple of edges would probably provide more control for turns. Looks like a lot of FUN.

kayakers were dropping cliffs on donner summit in the 80's.

How do you stop?
To stop, you have to drift and put your weight on the side you drift to avoid the overturn! But, don't worry! Kayakers list and put their weight on the right or on the left side when they turn or stop on water! The behaviour of the kayak is a bit different on the water and on the snow, but it's the same thing to do on the snow to turn and to stop. Displacing the weight on the side to turn or to drift is as useful on water as in the snow!
Imagine how painful it would be running into a tree or rolling down a slope. You can’t move cause your legs are tucked away in a kayak
