That was one of the biggest examples of institutionalized racism in Brazil. The history has books, docs, movies.
The families never got justice and the police command got medals... this song was wrote many years after the massacre, as another way to criticize the fact that nothing happened in justice ways with who did that.

This song is about a massacre in a Brazilian prision called Carandiru. Theres a book about it and afte, it became a movie. The book was made by Dr. Drauzio Varela who was the Doctor at this prision and became very famous in Brazil. There is a book about the CD that have this song, the book and the CD are called Sobrevivendo no inferno ( Surviving in the hell).
Em 1997 eu criança ouvindo Racionais essa foi a primeira musica de rap que ouvi na vida ,depois de mais velho fui em 3 shows e consegui comprimentar mano Brow edy rock e ice blue Racionais para mim significa muito minha banda preferida.

111 people were massacred in 1992. The police were tried many years later and nothing happened. Carandiru was imploded in 2002.... This song won several awards in Brazil
on October 2, 1992 in this prison (carandiru) there was a rebellion that the police invaded and killed more than 111 inmates.
and the part that talks about leaving the family is that in the Brazilian prison system the visitation process is very humiliating for the family member, and also q the family's shame for seeing a child in prison.

The responsible for this massacre is the Ubiratan colonel. He have been judged and get more than 600 years for the 111 deaths in this massacre, but he not even go to the jail. A lot of years later he was murdered at his own home with the words "aqui se faz, aqui se paga" (here you do, here you pay) sprayed in the wall.

Em 05:49. Na verdade na maioria das cadeias e presídios do Brasil. A situação é tão precária devido o estado não se importar com pessoas reclusas, presidiários. Que em muitas cidades nem uniformes é fornecido. Eles estão mostrando a realidade!

"Fleury" is a mention to a cop, from the military ditactorship times, accused to lead a death squad that did all sort of violence acts against any opposer of his allies(including journalists, activists...). not at the same time as the Carandiru massacre, but is a nice mention by racionais.
He puts Fleury in this song as the man who gives the order to kill while lunching a fancy food
From what I remember there was a riot in this prison so the state governor sent the elite police to "control" the situation. In addition to that, he also awarded some police officers with medals for neutralizing the inmates. It was really effed up and something we can never forget. A testament of all the social inequalities in Brazil.
