I was a white middle class Brazilian teenager in the late 1990's... This song shocked me strongly when I first heard it. Racionais MC's brought me a reality from which I was totally alienated.
this song is a masterpiece. Several subtle bars with references that you who are not Brazilian will never understand .. like: throughout the entire song Brown says "yes, make money, get rich finally" .. and at the end of the story when the police are invading your home, he asks "if they catch me, my son is left with nobody..what do you want? another little black one at FEBEM?" and then complement it with an angry "YES!" in a much louder tone than all the other times where he says "yes" because this time he is answering his own question ... this is crazy. Another line I love in this song is "one week after came the crack .. rich people behind, directors" this line is great because it is a reference to drugs and our football, in our language we have crack (drug) and crack (the best player of the team, the star) and in both there are rich people behind, directors .. Racionais is legendary man
There's a movie called "Carandiru" based on prison and there's a character in the movie called "Peixeira" who is based on Mano Brown. It's a great movie, you should watch.
The outro is also very important for the storytelling of the song. The TV guy says: "Homem mulato aparentando Entre vinte e cinco e trinta anos É encontrado morto na estrada do M'Boi Mirim sem número Tudo indica ter sido acerto de contas entre quadrilhas rivais Segundo a polícia, a vitima tinha vasta ficha criminal" Wich means something like: "A mixed-race man, about 25 or 30 years old, was found dead at the M'Boi Mirim road. We believe that it was a settlement between gangs. The police says that he had a lot of charges on his criminal records".
Yeah man, a lot of people didn't realise that. How this man (on the road) story afterward was completely distorted by the police and the media. From someone cowardly executed in his own home, by the cops, for a crime he didn't commit; he became just another criminal, killed in a gang reckoning, after they moved his body somewhere else. And we see this shit every single day. People are quick in judging someone, whom they are told, is crime related - therefore deserve nothing but death. Without thinkin that there's an enormous history behind that person.
this song was the first of the first songs of the RACIONAIS Mc's that put them on the rap scene in 1993, this song is like a hymn here. I really appreciate that, their songs are about our reality and they put me on the right track when I was lost. thanks for listening to our best rappers, and if Mano Brown speaks English, he would definitely be with Tupac as one of the best! thank you! And you need to hear the magic formula of peace
This song was written in 1993. 'Man on the road' is one of the greatest masterpiece of Racionais MC's and, Brown is like 2Pac once he grab the microphone.
I love this song. Is so real! I recommend the song 'Eu vou' - Hot Oreia Part Djonga. Maybe be insteresting you react the film Cidade de Deus (City of God) based in real facts, it's the history of CDD slum (favela). This place is from Mv Bill and Kamila CDD. This film received an award at the Cannes festival and all of its actors were residents of the favela, some are still residents today.
This song is an adaptation of Tim Maia* A tribute that Racionais made to the melody. Racionais MC wrote the lyrics, with the melody of "Ela Partiu" by Tim Maia.
Hey guys, I'm very happy because you really undestand the song mensage, its hard, its heavy but its unhappy a true for all brazilians who living in an difficult reality in favela. I think the same, Mano Brown its a genius storyteller and If him write in english he broke everything. Congrats for react Bro, sucess for us.
This song is amazing. In the story there are some crimes happening and since he is an ex convict he is wrongly accused, convicted and murdered by the police. At the end of the song it's an audio of some news telling a body was found on a road with multiples shots and that it was probably from a beef between rival gangs, since the victim had a vast criminal record. So "The Man On The Road" it's about just another body on the road. Masterpiece.
At the end of the song a reporter is saying "a man was found on the road, everything seems like a reckoning between rival gangs!", So you understand the name of the song, a man on the road.
At the end of the song, when the lyrics end, the reporter says on a live link that a body was found at the road of Itapemirim or something like that. He was the man on the road.
man this song is really cool, it is part of the reality of a lot of brazilian aki, i grew up listening to RAP this style aki in brazil is one of the biggest, congratulations bro for the work i hope it keeps getting better with this BEING NOW
É o melhór letrista do rap brasileiro. ✌🏼👏🏼 😉
The part "Even IBGE came here and never came back, listed the shacks and asked several questions and soon after they forgot about motherfuckers" ... it is a very strong feeling of abandonment that we have in the peripheries and favelas.
Racionais is a set of rappers more fucking of the national scene (Brazilian), they are in fact pioneers of Brazilian rap, considered by many the best group of rappers of all time in the Brazilian scene. Certainly they would have much more world recognition if they were Americans, we would say today that in the current North American scene, who makes a rap with the same proposal of Rationals is Joe Cole and Kendrick Lamar
I absolutely love your reactions to ours brazilian songs. I want to suggest "Um gole de veneno"- Facção Central, a song that, for me, is one of the greatest of our rap.
MAN, there's something very important to know about this song. After the shots, in the end, there are some reporters saying that "A BODY OF A MAN WAS FOUND ON THE ROAD" with no documents and a road with no number... so it's untrackable... So "The man on the Road" is actually telling a story of an already dead man who was found on the road, however during all the song "the man on the road" means that that man is struggling.... you feel me ??
U commented about the N word on the lyric. I believe most ppl outside US dunno dat there's different meaning between "er" n "a", so... 🤷🏻 I dun remember how I ended up here a few weeks ago, but I rly love ur reactions. Not only cuz they feel rly honest to me, but also cuz u rly try to understand the lyrics even having a cultural abyss between our countries. Keep up with dat incredible work, both of u r amazing Oh, I almost forgot. Check out Sem Limites, from Facção Central, once u've the chance. The lyrics r heavy af, but it shows a... uh... how can I say it? A reality no one talks about, y'know
They sampled this beat from Ela Partiu- Tim Maia.. Tim Maia was the king of soul music in Brazil, you guys should check out too
Yes, and the Racionais name is because of Tim Maia's album dropped in the 80's. Tim was one of the biggest, to me, he was the best musician ever.

Mano Brown can be easily considered the greatest storyteller of the history of rap music.

A população pobre e majoritariamente preta é desprezada diariamente. Triste.
The part "Even IBGE came here and never came back, listed the shacks and asked several questions and soon after they forgot about motherfuckers" ... it is a very strong feeling of abandonment that we have in the peripheries and favelas.
