I wonder what the strategies on this category are. I'd imagine digging out a few layers to abuse creeper spawns would be involved, and better torch placing for gravel/sand. I also noticed he would also waste half a block mine when digging 2 blocks at a time, going from top to bottom then back up, like around 12:50.

Minecraft is the best selling game of all time, is a cultural touchstone, has had massive cultural impact, *and isn't going anywhere any time soon*
If Minecraft did not have multiplayer or mods, I could see a Minecraft killer being a real possibility as the core minecraft experience can become pretty stale for a lot of people. With those two, the game has a great deal of replay-ability and entertainment value beyond the core Minecraft experience and any 'minecraft-killer' probably has a minecraft mod that is exactly like it.

You should race someone at mining a chunk. And then have chat donation incentives to give buffs and debuffs. Loading Ready Run did this once, it’s called the Punch-a-chunk challenge.
