Almost at 400,000 miles and just about to replace timing belt and water pump. Finally replaced the ignition coil since it still has the original. Engine, transmission, starter, radiator still original. Running like a low mileage Lexus.
Right at 350,000 miles, the original transmission still shift like it only has less than 100,000 miles. The Tranny fluid is always bright red and I change them at least every 15,000 miles or whenever I feel like like. 4.2 quarts on drain and refill at $5 a quart of OE Toyota type T IV does not break the bank and cheaper than a engine regular oil change in some cases! Although I buy my synthetic oil at Costco for $25 for two 5 quart jug Kirkland and $4 for OE toyota oil filter. So $16.50 for engine oil change every 4000 to 5000 miles depending if I went offroading or towed a trailer, I would change it a lot sooner.
Great to see it’s holding up really well! Have one with 124,000 miles currently and has the tow prep package from factory with the hitch, cooler and larger radiator. Have you changed your ATF/transmission fluid filter? The 4.2 quarts for a drain and refill, is yours AWD? Mine’s AWD and I’m looking to stay ahead of fluid changes to keep everything in good condition as well.
That’s awesome! Super low mileage at 124k! Mine is AWD. I’ve replaced the tranny filter about 3 times over the life of the 351,000 miles. Tranny filter screen is very clear and it’s nice to be able to clean the pan and the magnet that collects the micro metal shavings. I change my ATF type T-IV fluid as a drain in refill every 15k miles to keep it bright red and clean at all times. Fluid is very cheap and very easy. And yes. 4.2 quarts always comes out at drain and refill. I also change the rear differential and transfer case with 75w90 synthetic gear oil every 30k miles. Coolant, brake fluid, and power steering fluid (Denton ATF) also gets changed regularly. I go every 4000 to 5000 miles on engine oil (5w30 synthetic) even the manual says 7500 miles. Motor and tranny still original. Had to change the alternator twice. I changed the struts, ball joint, tie rod, stabilizer bar links as preventive maintenance to get the drivability feel back to original.
@@AdoreeGeorge thanks! Yup, it’s pretty low especially for a 1999. It’s one of the very first ones, I think since the build date was on July ‘98 lol. Anyways, thanks for the info! The trans fluid has been changed quite religiously I think since at the moment it’s cherry red, but I’m not sure if the filter’s ever been done before which is why I’m looking at doing that real soon, along with another drain and fill for good measure. :) I agree that fluid is waay cheaper than a transmission and the inconvenience of a failure. I have also replaced both the rear diff oil and transfer case oil, as well as the front struts while the rear struts are currently on order. The suspension has held up really well and it rides like new too. Thanks again for all the info! Your RX is sure to run forever and might be the first million-mile RX! Great adventure with the RX! How’s it holding up?

I just bought 1 n I love your views 😊
Still have 150k left of ball joints
😂 You are absolutely right! Note to self: change the ball joints at 500k miles!
