I do a similar thing when trying to fall asleep - what's worked best for me is, weirdly, imagining that I'm lying in bed falling asleep in a different room than the one I'm in. I let my mind drift around the room filling in all the details of the space and making it a comfortable safe place to fall asleep in.
Damn, this is what life is meant to be. Being gentle to other people, animals and the planet, being cool and discussing best ways to fall asleep while watching Peter draw. Would be a perfect world if everyone followed.
“Being gentle to animals”, meanwhile the ink he’s using contains the collagen from skins, bones, tendons, and other animal tissues, probably horses or rabbits 🤣

Ha! I do the same thing. I come up with a random thing to think about and let it slowly morph into something else as I fall asleep. I love how you put it into words. For me, if I am nervous about something- like what if an empty room to my left has something scary inside - I just put something cute and happy in it. Like a fluffy cow.
I liked your first drawing a lot! I find if I’m facedown it “shuts off” my brain and I can fall asleep right away, but if I’m face up my thoughts won’t shut off. When I was a kid, I used to build my dream castle in my head to fall asleep
When my mind won't shut down at night, a method I developed to fall asleep in my twenties, was to pick the place I felt the most peaceful in real life which was a beach facing the ocean, deserted except I knew my father watched over me from a distance, so I was safe. I imagine as it was in reality that night, the sound of the waves crashing. The moonlight casting different black, gray and white values on the waves and just the peace of everything together. Sand between my toes, the delicate coolness. Those extremely hard nights to find sleep, this most often helps and descends into a continued peaceful sleep. Does it always help, no, not if my mind is frantic on some type of scary problem, but more often than not. Think it's best to identify your own most peaceful and safe place in life and use that. Love your videos Peter, thank you for rei-nspiring me in my later years to begin drawing again. Bye.
lovely art as usual! i have the same problem with sleep that if i'm not going to bed absolutely exhausted i struggle to fall asleep. something that helped a ton was knowing that even if you're not falling asleep right away, simply laying down and trying to sleep is still rest for the brain and the body and never wasted time! i don't know if i explained it correctly but it takes away that stressful thought of "i'm wasting good sleep time" and beating myself up when, well that isn't helping. thank you for your great videos, it always is a nice break from life when you upload :)
I have been using that same method to fall asleep! I just realized that my imagination drifts into real images about the same time that I lose control. Sometimes I can maintain control well into the full dream. I can't always achieve it, but it is really fun when it does work.
I love the idea of priming a dream up while falling asleep. For some reason, I am typically aware that I am dreaming and I just treat them like a rollercoaster to see where they go. Your art is so phenomenal and mesmerizing! Thank you for sharing it, take care
Hullo Peter, I do enjoy watching your videos and listening to your reflections upon life and your philosophies on life and well any subject to be quite honest. Melatonin drops and watching/listening to something thats somewhat interesting and calming is the only thing that helps me. Adhd - gotta distract my busy brain
I used to have this one where I was running like in slow mo through almost a desert landscape. Just one tree far away and mountains along the horizon. Something about the rhythmic sounds of steps comfort me. I mostly focused on "right, left, right, left..." and imagining the tree coming closer and closer. Under the tree there was usually a herd of goats or sheep where I would lay down and cozy up in the pile of animals and there I would fall asleep. Worked almost every time.
One method I’ve started to try (which seems quite like yours) is that when you close your eyes you see all sorts of lights. I like to make shapes out of those lights and try to make them into different objects. I like to think that this is how dreams start but I find it really helps kickstart the dream! And it’s entertaining as it changes every night.
I often plan out before hand what I’m going to think about before I fall asleep. I’m aphantasic or wtv so I can’t visualize but I can “imagine”. Most often I’ll think about preforming a concert as a lead singer of a band… usually calm and relaxing songs I know, or just songs I make up in my head. I also like to imagine myself talking to friends or strangers before or after the concert at the bar I’m preforming at I guess
I know exactly what you mean when you talk about just lying awake and feeling like you can't shut off your brain. It's almost always the reason I have trouble falling asleep, so I've figured out ways to put my brain on like a predetermined "track" that it can just run along instead of going in all different directions like crazy. My go to's are a couple relaxing instrumental music/thunderstorm playlists, but if my brain keeps trying to run away even while listening to those I'll switch to videos I've watched already with people talking relatively calmly. I've fallen asleep a lot to studson studio's crafting videos and some of the "taking it easy" episodes from drawfee, or even stuff from baumgartner restoration.
It's been a while since I've watched one of your videos. I'm so happy this video came to me when it did though! Listening to you talk is very relaxing and has I've been drawing alongside you and whenever I look up I'm always amazed by the progress you've made in your piece!
You just delivered a dumbfounding lightbulb moment to my brain chamber by putting black negative space on paper *first*. (You didn't use it as negative space, but my drawings tend to contain such black areas, and I always have to very painstakingly insert them around tiny fiddly bodies. I will try this composition-reversal!!) PS: Watching/listening to this video in bed deserves an advisory warning. 😂
I imagine flying and floating trough the air. From anove I”m navigating streets I know very well going to my favourite places. I rarely get to where I’m heading before I wake up the next morning. Another thing I do is focusing on one body part at a time starting with my toes and slowly progressing over the parts of the feet, ankle and so on. As a bodypart is passed over I imagine it is at a comfortable temperature, heavy and almost immobile. I rarely get past the knees before sleeping 😊
I always love it when I become aware that I've slipped into dreamland! Unfortunately sometimes I then become too aware and wake up again 😕 Peter, I think you might like trying to fall asleep while creating the route to your very own Shangri - la, then imagining every detail of your special place and how GREAT you feel as soon as you arrive there!!! Great drawings, Peter!

Maybe it would have been a good idea to set the parking brake when I left the Winnebago to take a picture of the no passing sign. I didn't think of that till my home on the road rolled back down the mountain and shot over the edge of a rather steep and high cliff. It seemed as if it soared in a curiously box like fashion for several seconds until it landed on it's top on the canyon floor. Anyway the picture of the no passing sign came out real nice. These memories came flooding through my mind when I saw your second drawing.

the way you describe you start your dream, is similar to getting into meditative state, when you then fall a sleep , it brings you probably in your subconscious, so the things you get to see, might be good symbolics, to tell you things you need are want to know the help you in your life, it's like a communication with your higher self.
When I can't get to sleep, I replay dreams I've had in the past, try and think about what happened in an old dream or recall dreams from years ago. Peter's been doing this "listening to a story while watching something else in the same video" for a long time now. You know that instagram tik-tok short attention span videos where people put a video of something unrelated to the story so the audience can focus on what's being told while their eyes have something to do otherwise they lose interest, because most people can't stay focused during plain old storytelling anymore. Yeah, those ones. What i'm trying to say is that Peter is a master in doing that because you actually get 2 stories, and watching him draw is actually engaging and interesting.
I’ve had times where falling asleep is scary, but it was the sensation of falling asleep itself - like I’m oozing down into the darkness of my bed. I’ve also done little imaginations like that. As a kid, before bed, I would conjure up little adventures that would be so stimulating that I would remain awake! More recently, I’ve done “dream re-entries”, which is where you use the setting and dynamic of a dream as the basis for an imagination. Since the dream was salient enough to remember, your unconscious can take over again - in fact, that’s what I aim for!
So many people have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep. Here are things that work for some people. 1. Don't eat a big meal or anything sugary or heavy within an hour of bed time. 2. Eat a banana. There is something in bananas that promote sleep for some people. This one helps me. 3. When in bed stretch out fully on your back and slowly tighten every muscle in your body. This takes concentration. Start from the top of your head and move down your arms to hands and torso and down to toes. Hold a bit. Then relax muscles from head down. Imagine your whole self getting heavy as you release tension. Melt gently into the bed and breath evenly relaxing breaths. 4. Read an actual book. Not a kindle or your phone. Make sure it isn't a super interesting one! 5. Pray for people and for God's rest to come over you. 6. Turn off...unplug all devices. You can unplug your internet, your tv and anything near your head. Leave your phone in another room. Some people are super sensitive to electronics. It is like a constant buzz or tinnitus or tension in the brain. 7. White noise. There are websites specifically that produce sounds for sleeping. Rain falling. Ocean waves. Birds or crickets. Even horses on cobblestones! I love these. Some play for hours. Just don't leave it close to your head. Across the room is best. I hope you all sleep soundly tonight.
Hi and as usual I just really love the art, Peter! 😊 I also loved the idea of imagining a Beach scene as we fall asleep. I, too, have trouble falling off, and oh, yes, you are spot on that when we have that deep sleep night next morning. Our mood is oh so perky. The Bahamaian beach at day break, I think, would be grandious to try tonight. Thanks for the ideas on imaginings as we do try and hit up the Sandman.
Love your drawings. 😊👍 I've had sleep troubles my hole life.... in the last few years, I found something called "Sleep Stories".... and my favourites are the ones on "Michelle's Sanctuary" (here on You tube)....... and they help a lot.... but lately, they've started putting adds at the end, which is Jarring, and defeats the whole purpose of listening to the stories.... *sigh*.... the story works, it lulls me to sleep, and then A LOUD ADD STARTS and it snaps me awake, heart racing. *sigh*. Anyway.... your imagination technique sounds really neat. I just might try that. 😃👍
Ditto. Every nite. Last thing i do is tune into his you send it I art it playlist. Shuffle and I drift off peacefully. Thank you Peter. I threw away the pills the dr gave me. Im sorry you struggle peter. You have alot of energy. Classtime and new projects will hopefully help.
I have no problem falling asleep, but I keep waking up. Sometimes I use the sleep timer in my audiobook reader. I add a bookmark first so if I fall asleep before the timer ends I know where I started and don't go back too far looking for my spot.
I think having a secondary audio book that I listen too SPECIFICALLY for sleeping has helped me a lot. because then I don't care if I fall asleep because I know I'm just going to rewind to a random point or back to the beginning again anyway tomorrow night. I have this one dream from my childhood that I always would use when I was having nightmares or I was having a hard time getting to sleep because of something frightening. In my dream I would imagine myself as a tiny human in a giant's castle, sort of Jack and the Beanstalk esque. And I would imagine my dream as a pack of a bunch of man eating giants that were chasing me in the castle, and there was one friendly giant that would help me hide. There were several different places in the castle I would hide. One was a library with giant books, and I would slip in between two of the giant books and find a safe place there. One was a crack in the wall in the hallway that was big enough for me to squeeze into as they go past, and one was a round indoor pond with a bridge over it, and in the pond were these lily pads and these reeds that were hollow. I would jump in the pond go underwater and breath through the reeds while the bad giants past me. Thinking back on it now it seems like some what of a frightening dream, but it would always help me relax. Because I could change whatever the thing that was really frightening me into a pack of giants, and I knew I could always escape the giants because I knew the castle really well. I used that dream for years and years and years to help me fall asleep if needed.
My last resort is to count backwards 100 to zero. Sometimes it takes more than once to fall asleep, but seems to work pretty good. And this ink is lush.
What pen were us using for the second drawing in this video? I assume it was Platinum Carbon Black ink. Have you considered Platinum Sepia Black ink on cream or ivory paper?
It’s the Platinum Desk Fountain Pen, and yeah I assume it has Platinum Carbon Black ink in it, since that’s what it’s advertised as being able to use well. I’m still using the ink that came in it, haven’t refilled it yet

1. So is the Chinese ink better or preferable in some way? 2. While falling asleep I like to "work" on my current drawing or plan the next. 3. Movie recommendation: Skinamarink.
I was planning on using India ink for this, but I could only find the bottle of Chinese ink so I decided to try it, it didn’t seem quite as dark without layering sometimes, but it worked great otherwise
I nearly always rely on herbal assistance to sleep. That and a white noise machine. Not that I'm necessarily a light sleeper, but I can kind of transport myself without being able to hear the sounds of the house. Laying on my stomach on top of my hands (on my thighs) helps too, but that might be a weird "me" thing. My dreams tend to be themed, set around some combination of the current and the past. I know the dead will greet me when I get there, those who have passed over the years, so when I think about them in the context of my dreams as I settle into bed, I drift. I just have to hope I don't wake in the night. I find it difficult to want to fall back into a dream I've interrupted.
I usually make up fanfic with me in it of whatever I'm reading/watching at the moment. Lol my dreams are never an extension of the fanfic though unfortunately.
Sometimes if I am exhausted and I wake up before I've slept long enough I will get auditory hallucinations as I'm falling back asleep. It's really freaky.
I’ve always had trouble sleeping since I was a babeh so what I do is get the purple box of melatonin gummies then I watch a simple tv show or people ASMR repairing things like furniture orrr game systems till my mind quiets down and I can’t keep my eyes open. Also listening to English accents put me to sleep for some reason
I know youtube pushes sexualized asmr... but channels like Gibi Asmr are really worth checking out getting into it.. i really think youd do a great video of it.
I like how in modern society we have all these things figured out and science around everything but how exactly to fall asleep is still a bit of a mystery. Sure there is a factual scientific article on exactly how to do it somewhere though.
"I laid me down and slept; I awaked; for the LORD sustained me." Psalms 3:5 "I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety." Psalms 4:8 "It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep." Psalms 127:2 "[3]Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. [4]Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH is everlasting strength:" Isaiah 26:3-4 "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." John 14:27 "[6]Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. [7]And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:6-7 I'm still praying for you.

Peter, I believe that if you persist with your falling-asleep technique, it could eventually lead you to some captivating and intriguing experiences.
Very talented.
Love your drawings. 😊👍
I've had sleep troubles my hole life.... in the last few years, I found something called "Sleep Stories".... and my favourites are the ones on "Michelle's Sanctuary" (here on You tube)....... and they help a lot.... but lately, they've started putting adds at the end, which is Jarring, and defeats the whole purpose of listening to the stories.... *sigh*.... the story works, it lulls me to sleep, and then A LOUD ADD STARTS and it snaps me awake, heart racing. *sigh*.
Anyway.... your imagination technique sounds really neat. I just might try that. 😃👍
Oh man! You should check out this Peter Draws guy. Really great content with a unique relaxing voice. Puts my at peace and to sleep all the time!
Ditto.
I used that dream for years and years and years to help me fall asleep if needed.
watch asmr videos helped me a lot to go to sleep when im not tired
Love the vids Peter!
Nice! A Peter Draws vid!
My last resort is to count backwards 100 to zero. Sometimes it takes more than once to fall asleep, but seems to work pretty good. And this ink is lush.
PETERDRAWS ASMR PLEASE
What pen were us using for the second drawing in this video? I assume it was Platinum Carbon Black ink. Have you considered Platinum Sepia Black ink on cream or ivory paper?
It’s the Platinum Desk Fountain Pen, and yeah I assume it has Platinum Carbon Black ink in it, since that’s what it’s advertised as being able to use well. I’m still using the ink that came in it, haven’t refilled it yet
@@peter_draws Thanks for the reply. Incidentally, when I looked at your drawing again, the first thing I saw was an upside-down vehicle after a wreck. It almost looks like a mail truck.
I use a few channels to help me fall asleep I put these on literally everyday good luck to everyone trying to fall asleep
1) ASMR GLOW
2) Baumgartner Art Restoration
3) The Hoof GP
4) Peter Draws
The first piece feels like a cave painting you'd find on an alien planet
1. So is the Chinese ink better or preferable in some way?
2. While falling asleep I like to "work" on my current drawing or plan the next.
3. Movie recommendation: Skinamarink.
I was planning on using India ink for this, but I could only find the bottle of Chinese ink so I decided to try it, it didn’t seem quite as dark without layering sometimes, but it worked great otherwise
love the video!!!❤
Fell asleep 3 times watching this - still don't know how it ends.
Act 1 Peter was awesome. Act 2 Peter was fantastic. The finale was where it all came together where Peter is the best in the universe
I read, every night. If I can't fall asleep I break out the boring book, that works most of the time. If I really can't sleep I get up.
I have the same problem but it always wake up at six o'clock no matter when I fell asleep
"like many art supplies it has a distinct smell"
>unhappy flashback to the peter sniffing art supplies video slkjglskdfsgsdf
Hey Peter!
I thought imagining things until it turned into a dream was how everyone fell asleep lol
How you dont have 5 million subs is ridiculous.
You had barely begun your second draw-wing when I thought "that reminds me of a sound muffler and exhaust," and behold, it's the underbelly of a car 😵
Sumi is Japanese ink. A sumi-e is a Japanese ink painting.
shuǐmòhuà is Chinese ink.
The bad smell comes from the animal glue used in making the ink.
As I am watching this at 02:25 trying to sleep.. Trying the hallway method after the video thanks
What kind of sketchbook does he use?
I usually make up fanfic with me in it of whatever I'm reading/watching at the moment. Lol my dreams are never an extension of the fanfic though unfortunately.
which fountain pen did he use in the 2nd drawing?
Platinum Desk Fountain Pen
When will ur pen be available
I like your outfit ☺️
Sometimes if I am exhausted and I wake up before I've slept long enough I will get auditory hallucinations as I'm falling back asleep. It's really freaky.
I’ve always had trouble sleeping since I was a babeh so what I do is get the purple box of melatonin gummies then I watch a simple tv show or people ASMR repairing things like furniture orrr game systems till my mind quiets down and I can’t keep my eyes open. Also listening to English accents put me to sleep for some reason
Sumi is Japanese for ink
Sumi-e is an ink painting.
❤🖖
I know youtube pushes sexualized asmr... but channels like Gibi Asmr are really worth checking out getting into it.. i really think youd do a great video of it.
2:56 DEAD SPACE
Try to find some ASMR guided meditations and stuff. ASMR saved my life.
I like how in modern society we have all these things figured out and science around everything but how exactly to fall asleep is still a bit of a mystery. Sure there is a factual scientific article on exactly how to do it somewhere though.
WOAHHHHHH
Do you like Squarespace?
My five-year-old said the second drawing is a truck flipped over.
Day 1 of asking peter for a drawing asmr
"I laid me down and slept; I awaked; for the LORD sustained me."

Psalms 127:2
"[3]Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.
[4]Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH is everlasting strength:"
Isaiah 26:3-4
"Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid."
John 14:27
"[6]Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
[7]And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."
Philippians 4:6-7
I'm still praying for you.
Did you just casually draw underneath a car‽!!
It's sad knowing people with aphantasia cant experience this.
Screens at night will keep you awake. Set a time a few hours before bed to turn off screens and be disciplined.
That isn't true at all
Try blocking alllll the light in your bedroom.
Try listening to ASMR. works wonders if u have insomnia, depression, anxiety and so on....
You really need to educate yourself on what your using, bro.
Chinese.
Often, I find a small cup of milk and a cracker or two help when I'm having difficulty getting to sleep. The best source of sleepdom seems to be reading my bible. I rarely get more than a few verses before sleep comes. Try it. maybe it will work for you, too. :) Love your sumi ink pic!
That makes sense. The bible is boring as fuck
When I lived out of the car it was the easiest to fall asleep. Just lying down and boop im asleep.
I watch videogames that I like but dont have interest of actively watching.
LoL by Ipav999 or Trackmania by wirtual and so on
Also blinking veery slowly while lettin the eyes wander left to right with some weak light source in the room works a treat for me
C0UNT backwards from 50 :)
When will ur pen be available
