I’ve been knitting for 5 years and I was always too scared to try cables and it’s crazy how simple it is!
3 ปีที่แล้ว +33
I’ve been avoiding these for ages because I’d thought that each row will have something complicated to do, I had no idea it was just swapping 3 stitches every 4 rows. This was a super-clear tutorial, thank you!
I was so scared to learn how to cable knit, seeing as I just started like a month ago! But holy cannoli you make it so easy! I'm making a pretty scarf now!
My M-I-L explained how to cable but your explanation of moving the 3 stitches off the cable needle and back onto my knitting needle solved the struggle I've been having. Thank you...I'm cruisin' now!!!
Nice explanation. short sweet and to the point. I'm an experienced knitter who has done cable before but the last time was awhile back and I just needed a little refresher on how to work the reverse side. Within a minute I had my answer thanks to putting the directions for knitting the rows written at the top of the video.
yay! I am so glad to hear this video has helped and answered your question : ) sometimes we all need a bit of a refresher even if we have been knitting for years! thanks for watching & commenting!
This is an excellent introduction. You explain what we're looking at and how it's accomplished before you launch into the mechanics of it. I'm sharing this with a member of my yarncrafting group who has questions.
Wow! I was terrified of cables, having only just started knitting. I’m sure it’ll take some getting used to but I know the concept of it now. Thank you for the tutorial!
Ahh, I've been wanting to learn how to knit cables for quite some time, and now I am really excited to try to make headbands :) I actually learned how to knit because of your channel (before you uploaded updated tutorials) and it has become a hobby of mine, so THANK YOU!
+Susan Ho Yay! Yes yes, cables are great for making knit headbands! I've been meaning to knit one but haven't found the time yet. Thanks so much for sharing that you learned to knit from my older vids! It's so awesome to hear you still continue it as a hobby ^_^ this makes my day!
Wow! You really alleviated some of my fears of even trying to learn cabling. Thank you so much! I’m not there yet but I definitely feel like it’s nothint to be terrified of anymore.
I know the basic technique enough to follow a pattern, but I wanted to add a simple cable going up the back of a the mountain capelet from Purl Soho. Thank you for the great tutorial! I feel confident I can do it by myself now without it being in the pattern!
I just learned how to use double pointed needles, so I completely understand this method. You made it look so easy, I now believe I could knit something with a cable in it. Thank you for opening my horizons! Great video.....
YIKES, I am not there yet, but love these video's. You make it look very easy. Finished my first scarf (thanks to you), very simple pattern. A few more scarfs and MAYBE I will dare to try a different pattern. Thank you.
+jan b It looks a lot harder than it actually is! : ) Once you practice a few times and get the hang of it, it'll be a breeze! You can definitely do it if you've finished a scarf already! Thanks for taking the time to comment! Hope to see your finished projects on IG or twitter some time!
Just want to write this out for my own sake. Not criticizing this video, it has definitely helped me, and I'm hoping this post maybe helps somebody with a mind which thinks procedurally similar to mine. If not, it has still helped me, so... Reasons I watched this video a bunch and wanted to write this out: I understood the basic concept of cabling but couldn't figure out where my yarn was supposed to be when slipping stitches and when switching from knitting/purling the cable stitches in the wrong order to knitting/purling the cable stitches on the cable needle. As in - I have enough knowledge to understand that a yarn-over is implied any time we're switching from knitting to purling, but couldn't visualize where the yarn needs to be with pretty much anything involving the stitches slipped onto the cable needle. I've tried a few different sort of "cabling for beginners" written and photo instructions, but the instructions I've found seem to entirely leave out steps like "wyif/wyib" in relation to all three needles. I'm also still trying to figure out how the tension both between stitches and between/around the cables works. Yarn (over) behind the right needle and cable needle but in front of the left needle before slipping stitches purl-wise (1:12), also it seems like we're stretching the area between the needles here before slipping the stitches in order to create some slack (1:15) ; yarn over from the RIGHT side of the cable needle/stitches to between the cable needle and right needle before purling stitches out of order (so yarn is in front of cable needle but behind both left and right needles) (1:40) , also seems like we're maintaining slack between the beginning of the row and the slipped stitches but not as much slack between the beginning of the row and the out-of-order stitches (I imagine this is because the space created by the slipped stitches is what creates the necessary slack) ; leave yarn between left and right needles and in front of the cable needle when knitting the cable stitches (1:55), maybe stretching the area between the cables and the end of the row just a little; yarn over to front like normal for the rest of the row (2:50) .
Thank you! This makes it look like something I might be able to do! I'm VERY much a beginner in knitting, but I so want to learn to do a cable stitch! I *think* I could do this! Thanks again!
I spent two years so scared to try cables because I thought it would be crazy difficult. I did straight needles, different types of stitches, round needles, DPNs, hats, mittens, scarves, but I avoided this like the plague. Lol feel kinda silly now it's not as hard or crazy as I thought it'd be
Get a video editing tool that can flip all your screen recorded tutorials from left to right. Or just learn to knit differently before you get too advanced. I'm left handed and ok with regular, but have just started teaching myself continental which pretty much is flipped and VERY different, so I reckon it's worth playing around.
I am a beginner at knitting thank you so much for your beautiful work I can’t wait to get started. However, could you please tell me what the multipliers are. I counted your number of stitches and it is 14 stitches so if I want it wider do I need a 14 stitch repeat? You are doing a very good job I know if I follow you step by step I will be able to do it. Thank you again. Also, do I start with row 1 on the next 14 stitches and so on? Please help me when you have time.
This was lovely! Im just confused with the C6B and what it means...it seems like it would be C3B, k3...but I'm am totally new at this and don't understand...I was just hoping to learn patterns at the same time as learning the stitches
C6B is just the abbreviation for creating a cable that consists of 6 total stitches. So yes you will be slipping 3 stitches off purlwise to the back of your work, knitting the next 3 stitches off the left hand needle, then knit the 3 stitches that were held to the back. I hope this explanation helps answer your question!
Simple and easy to follow is my goal with my tutorials -- so it's really great to get feedback that the vid was easy to follow. Thank you for taking the time to comment!
I tried this from another video and I havent got a clue what went wrong, but not the base of my knitting has a very pretty but unintended pleat in it, and it's cute but it certainly didn't cable haha!! Could it be because I attempt4ed to do too big a cable? 30 stitches (15 and 15)?
If you wanted to make the row longer, just part of the pattern in the row. The pattern will depend on how many stitches you want between each cable. For example, if you wanted to have 3 cables per row with 1 stitch separating each cable, you would follow the pattern below: Cast on 28 stitches ROW 1 (wrong side of work): K4, P6, K1, P6, K1, P6, K4 ROW 2 (right side of work): P4, K6, P1, K6, P1, K6, P4 ROW 3 (wrong side of work): K4, P6, K1, P6, K1, P6, K4 ROW 4 (right side of work): P4, C6B, P1, C6B, P1, C6B, P4 Hope this helps and makes sense!
Hi, my pattern says to k6,p2,k2,p2,k3, (sl 3sts onto cable needle and leave at front, k3, then k3 from cable needle) twice, p2,k2,p2,k6. What am I not getting this. Please can someone help me
I hope it worked out for you 8 years ago. Cables need to be swatched as they need more stitches than stockinette, and more than rib, so increases for cables need to be done next to ribbing.
thank you so much. i don't get why people cant do it as simple as you, you did it under 3 minutes, showed us the main part, and explained the rest of the layout at the end in text. the only decent tutorial out there for cable knits. everyone else's was actual shit, either they said nothing, or said so much i fell asleep halfway through
trying to find a certain cable stitch. I started a project and lost the stitch pattern. is there a place I can Send u a pic of the pattern? I have looked everywhere online and can only find it in spanish
Hello, I am fairly new to knitting and I have a silly question. After finishing the front side of the work when you turn to the back side, do you just knit the knits and purl the purl's on the back side? Totally not sure what to do on the back side at all. Thank you.
Hi I'm from Puerto Rico and I will like to learn how to knit I don't know how to read a pattern of a cable knit sweater that I bought online can you please tell me we're I can find a video that will help me step by step to make this sweater
I think most videos will not show step by step for a sweater since it has so many steps! Your best bet would be to find a pattern online and then look up how to do each stitch in the pattern :) good luck! I have yet to knit a sweater!
Wow i am pissed, its so easy lol 😅 thank you so much for this video i have been so terrified to learn how to cable knit. Imma buy some DPN’s and a cable needle to start making this pattern.
Yup you will almost always knit the stitches that you are cabling. This is because of the way the knit stitch looks vs the purl stitch. If you purl the cabled stitches it will not create a prominent cable shape. It may help by looking at the shape of knit stitches (they look like a bunch of "V"s stacked) as opposed to purl stitches which end up looking like "- - -" dashes stacked. I hope this makes sense! It's a bit challenging to explain via text!
Beautiful, could I please request a tutorial on how to make a newborn V neck cardigan please I'm due baby in march and need cardigans but don't no any knitters so would love to make mine but cannot find step by step tutorial on the newborn V neck, many thanks in advance 😊🇮🇪
It depends on your project/pattern! This video was only for tutorial sake so I wasnt actually making a project out of it. Just to show how to create a cable. Hope this helps answer your question!
+Nahala Famia Your cast on number will depend on the project you're working on. In this video, I cast on 14 stitches just to create a small swatch for this tutorial. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions :)
I think that she keeps the twisting for the "right" side and carries on on the wrong side the same way she would have carried on if she hadn't twisted on the right side. on the wrong side she must do 4k 6P 4K.
FINALLY! Someone who explains things without taking a half hour before they touch their needles. Simple and to the point.
Lol
You know you can just fast forward to where they start knitting. 🤦♂️
It's fkn annoying to do so. So much opening blather for very simple tutorials. Sometimes deliberately so when monetised, other times it's just confusing or irrelevant. So it would be great if less youtubers did this, ditto those presenting recipes. No one cares about your life story, Janet.

Just started 1 week ago on knitting and this cable made me look like a had. 4 years experience
Now you do 😊
Now that you have four years of experience, how’s it going?
How is it?!

I was so scared to learn how to cable knit, seeing as I just started like a month ago! But holy cannoli you make it so easy! I'm making a pretty scarf now!
Glad to hear my video has helped you knit your scarf :D happy knitting & thank you for taking the time to comment!
brilliant tuition...straight into the instruction..no chatting to distract and I got it....Thank you
Yes, I cant do with unnecessary waffle. I’ve done cable many years ago but forgotten. I think I can manage now, thanks to this
Wait. That was it??? Why haven't I been doing this for years?! Thank you for making it so simple to understand.
My M-I-L explained how to cable but your explanation of moving the 3 stitches off the cable needle and back onto my knitting needle solved the struggle I've been having. Thank you...I'm cruisin' now!!!
Yay! I'm glad this video helped you solve an issue! Woohoo! Happy knitting!
Knitting has been a long time nemesis but cables are one of the reasons I want to learn so badly
You made that look so easy !
You can do it, too! : ) Practice makes perfect! Adding a cable pattern to your project instantly makes it look more fancy shmancy : p
You are like the best knitting teacher ever. I got it at the second try. thank you

Thanks so much for your kind words :) Thanks for watching
That's... that's it? They look so complicated! Thank you :)
Looks complicated, but easy to learn! Once you know the basics of cable knitting, it's all less complicated from there! Happy knitting!!
Thank you for your tutorial. I finally made my first cable stitch.

Your explanation was really helpful
Thank you so very much . Brilliant tutorial, why was I afraid, your teaching method so simple and logical .
Very simple, thank you! I have a few cable ebooks here and all of them just miss the point of what a beginner needs.
Man, it seems so complicated but it actually looks pretty darn easy! I can't wait to try this!
Happy knitting!

Thank you for sharing this! I agree with you the part of slipping the stitches back on the needle, I will be doing that as well!😊
You're welcome! I'm glad you were able to pick up some new tips : ) happy knitting!
Very clear instructions. You just made it so easy for me, I was struggling to understand. Thank you so much 😊
Wow! You really alleviated some of my fears of even trying to learn cabling. Thank you so much! I’m not there yet but I definitely feel like it’s nothint to be terrified of anymore.
Thank you so much I understood that completely, first time. I love people that can get to the point. Your an excellent teacher.
Yay!! You're welcome : ) thanks for your encouraging comment : )
THANK YOU! I've been wanting to knit cable for so long, and it was always so intimidating for some reason. :)

Love your video. Very precise and clear. You have given me the confidence to try my hand at cabling. Thank you sooo much!!!!
Thank you for taking the time to comment! Good luck with cabling and happy knitting this season!
I just learned how to use double pointed needles, so I completely understand this method. You made it look so easy, I now believe I could knit something with a cable in it. Thank you for opening my horizons! Great video.....
this is the best video ive seen explaining this stitch!
:D glad this helped you easily understand! Yay! Thanks for taking the time to comment!
I always wanted to do a cable stitch, it looks so complicated, but after watching this video, I shd try.

Your videos are amazing!! The most helpful I’ve viewed. Thank you!!
Thank you so much! You took the fear of cable knitting away 🤣😍
Such a concise explanation!! Thank you for a whole new skill!!!!!!
I spent two years so scared to try cables because I thought it would be crazy difficult. I did straight needles, different types of stitches, round needles, DPNs, hats, mittens, scarves, but I avoided this like the plague. Lol feel kinda silly now it's not as hard or crazy as I thought it'd be
Definitely something you can do if you're already working w/ DPNs and making hats/mittens etc! Happy knitting!
best explanation of how to cable stitch that I've found. thank you!
That means a lot to me! Thank you for watching!
I didn't know cable was this easy. It looks so complicated. I never even looked up the internet for this for fear.
You are SUCH a great teacher, thank you so much for all of your helpful videos. :D
You're too kind! Thank you for watching!
I remember knitting lots of these years ago, it was fun. :-)
Cables are fun, indeed!
Great video. Would love left handed instructions!
Get a video editing tool that can flip all your screen recorded tutorials from left to right. Or just learn to knit differently before you get too advanced. Thank you! This makes complete sense now!
Very informative video, thanks for helping us beginners take the first step.
You are very welcome! Thank you for watching & happy knitting!
very nice explanation for a beginner. I’m impressed and thank you 11
Amazing! Now I want to learn how to knit. 😁
Do ittt : ) It's a fun hobby, plus you get to create something tangible : p
How is it called the type if cable that is on the thumbnail,i wanted to do that one🥺
I started a project and lost the pattern. is there anywhere I can send a pic of it to you to see if u know this cable pattern? thanks.
Brilliant Tutorial thank you
Very nice , and explained perfectly , thank you.
You're welcome!
Can you use different size of knitting needle to put the cable stitch on
You sure can! If you use a thinner needle, stitches will slip off more easily.
Easy to follow along thank you
I am a beginner at knitting thank you so much for your beautiful work I can’t wait to get started.
Wow 😯
You make it so easy
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻😃😃😃😃😃
This was lovely! Im just confused with the C6B and what it means...it seems like it would be C3B, k3...but I'm am totally new at this and don't understand...I was just hoping to learn patterns at the same time as learning the stitches
C6B is just the abbreviation for creating a cable that consists of 6 total stitches. So yes you will be slipping 3 stitches off purlwise to the back of your work, knitting the next 3 stitches off the left hand needle, then knit the 3 stitches that were held to the back. I hope this explanation helps answer your question!
Can you please make a video on boot cuffs using this pattern, I am a beginner and would like to make boot cuffs using this stitch, thanks.
thank you! You made this very simple!
THIS HELPS SO MUCH
Wait. I saw rows 1-4 but what about rows 5+? Sorry I’m new lol. Do I repeat 1-4?
very nice , shows every thing
Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment :) It truly means a lot to me!
If I wanted to make it longer with more casting..how would I do that? Repeat what's on the rows?
If you wanted to make the row longer, just part of the pattern in the row. The pattern will depend on how many stitches you want between each cable. For example, if you wanted to have 3 cables per row with 1 stitch separating each cable, you would follow the pattern below:
Cast on 28 stitches
ROW 1 (wrong side of work): K4, P6, K1, P6, K1, P6, K4
ROW 2 (right side of work): P4, K6, P1, K6, P1, K6, P4
ROW 3 (wrong side of work): K4, P6, K1, P6, K1, P6, K4
ROW 4 (right side of work): P4, C6B, P1, C6B, P1, C6B, P4
Hope this helps and makes sense!
How many stitches did you cast on?
Hi, my pattern says to k6,p2,k2,p2,k3, (sl 3sts onto cable needle and leave at front, k3, then k3 from cable needle) twice, p2,k2,p2,k6. What am I not getting this. Please can someone help me
That's a different cable pattern from this one. What happens when you follow the directions with that one?
Thank You so much, very appreciative!!
Do you have to have your yarn in the left hand and knit this way to cable? I’m struggling to knit the way you demonstrated in this video.
Hi Thanks for your video it looks easy can't wait to try it,it's my next project I need to make a jersey for myself fingercross to do like a pro
Yay! Happy knittingg!
I hope it worked out for you 8 years ago. Cables need to be swatched as they need more stitches than stockinette, and more than rib, so increases for cables need to be done next to ribbing.
How do I decrease this pattern?
Question: do I repeat the rows always doing C6b? Or do I have to alternate c6b followed by c6f? Thanks
Great video, I love your nail color btw
thank you! it's from Ulta but I cant remember the color name ._. Something mauve :p
thank you so much. i don't get why people cant do it as simple as you, you did it under 3 minutes, showed us the main part, and explained the rest of the layout at the end in text. the only decent tutorial out there for cable knits. everyone else's was actual shit, either they said nothing, or said so much i fell asleep halfway through
trying to find a certain cable stitch.
Thank you.
How to knit c7 or c9 in a pattern please
How do you make it twist to the other side?
Hi I'm from Puerto Rico and I will like to learn how to knit I don't know how to read a pattern of a cable knit sweater that I bought online can you please tell me we're I can find a video that will help me step by step to make this sweater
I think most videos will not show step by step for a sweater since it has so many steps! Your best bet would be to find a pattern online and then look up how to do each stitch in the pattern :) good luck! I have yet to knit a sweater!
Awesome work.💙💛💟💜
I want to cast 44 stitches. How do you cable. Let me know.
Anyone have any tips on how to purl the first stitch in a easy way?
Very very easy👍👍👍👍
+Mrs Harris thank you for watching!
+purllinknitting what multiple is it
purllinknitting anytime
Wow i am pissed, its so easy lol 😅 thank you so much for this video i have been so terrified to learn how to cable knit. Imma buy some DPN’s and a cable needle to start making this pattern.
How do you start?
Very helpful video!
I'm glad this tutorial has helped : D thanks for taking the time to comment & give feedback!
Makes sense going to try this in a couple days
Always wondered how this stitch was done for YEARS now I figured it out
Thank you so much i am so good now at cables i made my mom a dish towel wi cables
Yay! I'm so glad the video helped! I'm sure your mom loves the handmade dish towels you spent time making for her! Happy knitting!
When cabling, do you always knit the stitches that you are cabling or would there be times that you purl them instead?
Yup you will almost always knit the stitches that you are cabling. This is because of the way the knit stitch looks vs the purl stitch. If you purl the cabled stitches it will not create a prominent cable shape. It may help by looking at the shape of knit stitches (they look like a bunch of "V"s stacked) as opposed to purl stitches which end up looking like "- - -" dashes stacked. I hope this makes sense! It's a bit challenging to explain via text!
Beautiful, could I please request a tutorial on how to make a newborn V neck cardigan please I'm due baby in march and need cardigans but don't no any knitters so would love to make mine but cannot find step by step tutorial on the newborn V neck, many thanks in advance 😊🇮🇪
how many stitches do you cast on to start out with?
It depends on your project/pattern! This video was only for tutorial sake so I wasnt actually making a project out of it. Just to show how to create a cable. Hope this helps answer your question!
So how do I start
thank you enormously!!!
This is so helpful!!
I was not taking it off the cable needle and was wondering how to get the stitches back
thank you!!! I can't wait to try this out. :)
+Stephanie Lue happy knitting! thanks for watching :D
how do u work the orther side?
This cable pattern is not reversible -- so the other side of the work doesn't look too good haha
Thank you very much for the tutorial :)
You're very welcome :) happy knitting!
how many cast on do u do
+Nahala Famia Your cast on number will depend on the project you're working on. In this video, I cast on 14 stitches just to create a small swatch for this tutorial. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions :)
Do you repeat on the other side ?
I think that she keeps the twisting for the "right" side and carries on on the wrong side the same way she would have carried on if she hadn't twisted on the right side. on the wrong side she must do 4k 6P 4K.
Wondering what your knitting style is? Is it left-handed English/ American? Very interesting to observe :)
my cables bunch so badly. going to try knitting off the original needle like you did
hope the alternative method works for you! if anything, start with very large needles and chunky yarn to practice!
