Marvel Mystery Oil keeps the vanos solenoids,chain tensioners and lifters clean of varnish and smooth running from my experience. BMW had poor assembly procedures and guidelines for this awesome motor.

    There is another way to do this job using the AGA valve stem seal tool. I did it a few weeks ago and rented the tool. You do not need to take the engine out or the camshafts. It is still very time consuming and difficult but doable for an advanced DIYer. This is still a great video though almost like an engine rebuild. It took me about 40 hours to do the job but could probably do it in half if I did it again. After doing the job, I see why shops charge so much.

    Hey Jonny, nice work! I know you hate this engine, and please don’t get mad at my stupid question, but I also have a 550i (2009 Jet Black M Sport) and i’m wondering if VSS failure is inevitable or if it can at least be prevented for a while. I got my car with 43k miles, has 91k now.
    The coolant valley pipe had already been replaced when i bought it in 2019, thank god. It has actually been rather “reliable” for me. I have a few oil leaks but nothing major yet. I change the oil every 5k with Liqui Moly Synthoil 0W40 and I use their additive package every few oil changes (Motor flush, Ceratec, Motor Oil Saver). I don’t have any white exhaust. The alternator bracket gasket leaks the most out of anything but it’s not excessive and hasn’t gotten any worse. I have to add one liter of oil in between oil changes.
    Do you think I could make it to 150k before needing to do the VSS job? I doubt the alternator seal will last that long, but that job is significantly less intensive than VSS replacement. What do you think?
    I’ve done a valve body rebuild with Sonnax zip kit on my 6HP gearbox as well.
    You may be shocked to hear this, but in my 50k miles of owning it, the only thing the engine has needed was a crankcase vent valve hose, an oil pressure sensor, a crank sensor, and a radiator coolant hose (the big front one that goes from the thermostat to the radiator). I replaced the spark plugs but they weren’t even bad yet. I feel like I got the BMW E60 lemon! The odd one in the batch that’s actually built well! 🤣

    • @dukedub
      @dukedub ปีที่แล้ว

      Alternator gasket bracket is a lot of work. A 30 min TH-cam don’t do it justice.
      The whole car really starts falling apart at 115k. I’m at 113k right now. You’re just behind me in miles, at this point we’re up against the material used to seal things is no longer sealing and the rubber used throughout the car is also breaking down.
      I’ve done quite a few repairs on mine in the past 20k miles.

    • @scootitnbootit9231
      @scootitnbootit9231 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dukedub i’m at 102k now. I’ve already replaced the alt bracket gasket, oil cooler line o-rings, valve cover gaskets, timing cover gaskets, pretty much everything that needed it. My coolant lines are in good shape.
      I’ve had the car since 40k miles and have done all maintenance on it since i’ve owned it. There are plenty of repairs i’ve done and plenty i will do in the future. I was just asking simply about valve stem seals. I still am not seeing any evidence of their failure.
      I’m running an ESS supercharger now, making a little over 500+ whp and same number of torques. It’s a blast.

    Hey Ninyah!! lol.... i recently sold my 2020 m4 comp and i really like the 2018 bmw m6 convertible, but it has the n63 motor.. I never race, track or drive like Tyler Hoovie nor will the car be winter driven or in inclement weather.. just sunny days top down, Hair Nation cranked on the radio.... My garage is heated all winter and i due all my own simple maintenance... I have owned 8 other bmws since 2010, so iam very familiar with them but i have never had a engine with this many skeletons in the closet... If i can get one with very light mileage, under 60000km would this be a good purchase? Some people say the engine has been great with ususal bmw issues some people say its crap..... Just want your honest opinion.. Thank you.. Oh just for reference iam located in Saskatoon Saskatchewan Can.

    Hey Jonny I'm a fellow technician from Canada and love your meticulous and clean work style. I just wanted to ask, when you were installing drivers side cylinder head you were using right side camshaft bearing caps. Wouldnt the right side be refering to the passenger side cylinder head?

      At our shop (52 years in the biz) I always taught my guys to refer to "driver side or passenger side" when speaking of engine parts or anything else under the hood.

    What an excellent video, talk about right tool for the right job. I figured this would be a simple valve seal replacement but you went over and above what many techs would do-I really enjoyed watching this video.

      @@machtschnell7452 What fix? Ford had this problem before 95 in the crown vic v8 engines. The valve seals harden up and they smoked at every light. At least you could do it in the car by tilting a special tool against the camshaft. I did 100s of them.
      No reason for this to be a problem years later. After 96+ the seals could last 400k

      @thethomasj1795 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Once that job is done the car will be good for a very long time. The N62 isn't a bad engine. It can last for hundreds of thousands of miles.

    What seems insane to me, is the fact that this issue persisted with engines produced from 2001 to roughly 2010. There is no way BMW didn't know about this "design" issue of the valve seals, couldn't they simply source more tight rubbery seals in the later engine production batches?

    They criticize Ferrari to drop the engine for a clutch work. Look at this piece of crap 💩 Beamer, to do a valve stem seals you need to drop the engine.....I would simply junk it instead!
