There is another way to do this job using the AGA valve stem seal tool. I did it a few weeks ago and rented the tool. You do not need to take the engine out or the camshafts. It is still very time consuming and difficult but doable for an advanced DIYer. This is still a great video though almost like an engine rebuild. It took me about 40 hours to do the job but could probably do it in half if I did it again. After doing the job, I see why shops charge so much.

I'm glad Johnny is making vids now! Also amazed at how much technical know-how he has (and, sadly, how much BMW's require for a job that sounds like it should be much easier). One thing is for sure - if you are going to roll the dice on an out-of-warranty German car, you need to find a good, honest mechanic who will do it right the first time and be prepared to pay the cost of doing it right! That, or you're going to get used to sending BMWs to the crusher and buying another one every time you hear "engine out."

I love watching videos where talented people repair complex cars. I also watch these to remember to never buy a BMW V8 of that vintage.

Hey man. Greetings from the Texas-Mexican border. We could not find someone to do meticulous work like that here! And I am like you. I like to take my time. But you work fast and quietly so thats why they call you Ninja huh? Just what I would recommend is to wear gloves when handling the brake cleaner and other solvents. Oil is no big deal. Unless it is dirty oil with lots of gasoline component in it. Take care man and nice video. 👍

Hi Johnny, great work!!! I would just like to know do you inform the customer whether to change the timing chain and guides or do you first check their condition before advising him or her? Is it advisable not changing them in the interest of saving cost, won't it bite later on?

Johnny is a great tech. Very impressive. Who would pay to have the valve seals replaced on their beamer tho?
