Self doubt has no place in a pro musicians head, its literally the thing that kept me from going hard for a music career. I think unbridled if not obnoxious confidence will serve you way faster than some dose of humility in music.
Great advice man . A lot of people struggle with this including myself . Sometimes you got to just do something and not be too much of a perfectionist .
The smarter a person is, the more they calculate how many things can go wrong which creates self doubt, whereas a dum dum thinks they are amazing and perform with no doubt at all. Its the Dunning Kruger effect, In sports they call it paralysis by analysis. The cure for the self doubt is confidence in KNOWING you are good at what you do, trying your best, and just living with the result and moving on. Great Video as usual.
Bravo! Keep up the good work. I remember reading that Frank Zappa said the first thing people do when they buy a record, is put it on and talk over it. I am a big believer in maintaining a sense of humor and knowing that I do “me” better than anyone else in the world.
Our most soulful recordings back in the day were live rythem section, where it was not perfect and might speed up at times....like jello wobbling a bit but holding the form of feel.....that imperfection made it perfect.
@badbrad ,playing to a click has it's place....but it removes a certain feel that our art uses to speak to the heart....old Rufus and Chaka Khan records had the perfect feel....Marcus Miller told me while recording the song Superstar with Luther Vandross, there is a part where Luther is saying "keep it right there " and he was talking to the band, reminding them to not rush and f"up this perfect take....I dig that they left it in the final mix,and Luther cared enough to be at the session singing to keep the feel.
As an improvising musician I put my faith in the purity of the expression of the moment. I do not seek perfection but honest expression.I find it best (although not so easy) not to be too critical as I am creating. I let a day pass in order to render judgement as to its worth. Mistakes are what make us unique. How we recover from mistakes is how we can break new ground in our playing. Preparation is paramount but when the time comes to engage in the creative process I find it best to cease critical thinking and let the process take control. In many ways the less involvement in reason and the more acceptance of the moment and groove will allow for a more complete, unfiltered expression from the soul. I am a jazz musician and I realize this method is not accepted across all types of music but it works best for me.
There is always someone that plays better or is better at deferent technique or styles. Truth is there is only 1 of you so that makes us unique and specialized in what we do best. We always critique looking back but that snapshot in time is exactly what it is.
I saw Allan Holdsworrh at the Josephine Theater in San antonio in 1984 and he looked so humbling and was shocked when the encode everyone stood up and rushed up front, he had a face like a little boy surprise not really knowing how we all adored him. He was not aware of his greatness it looked like. Special moment ❤
in this day and age... the competition is so rigid and "perfect" out there i believe we need to make it as best as we can... a good player can imply that the session all went down at the same time when in fact it was not... that is the musical art of a real player using a DAW and not intimidated by it - i'm gonne revisit my mixes whenever i am disturbed and that's not "over thinking" that's using my gift and my tools to my creative level of the moment.
My first producer was Don Evan’s, Billy Joel’s gtr player way back, Cold Springs Harbor days. The first trks I cut with him he said, after we played back, was “you won’t believe me, but it’ll never sound this good again.” I didn’t get the joke till I was five years into Hollywood 😂 I’ve played on so many records that got shelved in town. I’m 63, keep spilling the facts brother🤘🤘🎸🤘
Fake it until you make it. Just keep stumbling forward, using will, expectation, and faith. When folk see someone winging it so smoothly, they know it's genuine, and the real stuff. Mastering the tech is the easy part, and perhaps not a necessary priority. Got to figure out our acts first, and then apply the most helpful tech.
That's right Brad. Doesn't help that those conceiving a new production do so in the context of imagining what it will take to produce something monetarily successful on the Spotify platform. The dysfunction of the industry in and of itself will have musicians second guessing the value of their work. It's really quite remarkable to watch the music industry evolve with the disincentives in place.
Awesome video. I remember years ago reading articles where Randy Rhoads said he wasn't that good. I thought to myself " What? Are you kidding me?!" haha! Happy Saturday to you and family Brad!
Thank you for this video Brad. This is great for us all. It made me think of my own projects. Off subject, may I ask what you uses to add all the graphics/fonts/titles on your videos? They are really attractive and colorful. And what you use for editing.
After listening to this I HAD to put this up- it's from 1997 with Johnny Neel, who unfortunately passed away in Occtober- this was the first take at the end of a session with Johnny and Kenny Malone- it went around the world on its own- got me invited to play legalization festivals-
Great advice! Believe in yourself. However, if you can't play more than the same handful of riffs, setting your ego aside and some woodshedding might be helpful to your success. Oversized egos can end careers. We've all met arrogant musicians with oversized egos.
Yah, I'm the way too busy non practicing musician. And tomorrow's jam one of the local greats from a very high end killer band is gonna be at jam. Im having some self don't last few days about it. I generally do pretty damn good. I'm sure once thysic starts ill be fine.. But I'm nervous as all hell and I don't get nervous but I am in my older age lately. Because I don't practice. But end of the night at home my nephew and I wrote a dn cool song in about a half hour just before we went to be.
Judging by the mega ton of crappy music being put out every day - I think more musicians should have self doubt. Not about their playing or production ability - which matter very little, but about their ability to write brilliant songs. We're saturated w great players and producers, but they suck at writing. We have a severe shortage of brilliant songs.
We have a LOT in common- I lived in Nashville from late '89- I was LUCKY and worked for Cowboy Jack Clement and got to know EVERYBODY!!! The MONEY ruined everything- TW
Absolutely 💯 percent. Union ironwork is another career where confidence is a must. Putting steel frames on high rises, bridges, etc. Picking massive loads. Just overall you have to be confident in your knowledge and ability. Ive seen cats that question themselves. Is this ok? Will that fly? No bueno Brad.

That’s me baby, obnoxious confidence! I’m the best song writer in world, just nobody knows it yet

You are a good teacher Brad. I always wondered why the Stones, Fleetwood Mac, et al would do 40 takes of their songs in the studio.
There is a method to the madness

The greater the artist, the greater the doubt. Perfect confidence is granted to the less talented as a consolation prize" Robert Hughes.

Some different stuff depending on the video. Most of the time it’s just Final Cut Pro. That is the main ap I use to edit.
as the saying goes art is never finished only abandoned
