In our experience, small liquor stores always have hidden gems. We've found some dusties and allocated bottles at MSRP or well below the average price. Great video, Hunter! Your videos never disappoint.
My favorite part about it is the true “Small Batch” its less than 20 barrels sometimes which is super unique! I need to grow a pair and buy the 16 at some point
I've had two different batches, both took some time to open up (a couple months). But once they did they're some of my favorties! The rich oak/mouth feel are tremendous for only 106 proof. $160 is a little steep, I paid $130 for my first bottle and $115 for the second (Costco, wish I had gotten more!)
It's really good. And the age statement is cool, the bottle is beautifully, but paying 150+ for sourced whiskey just bothers me. It's also not the best whiskey I'd ever had. When Jack single barrel is 65+ and gets up to hazmat proof in comparison I can't recommend Calumet 16 at that price. It's good, but is any bottle really worth 150+?
Just went to the liquor library in Myrtle beach off of your video recommendation. And the same guy was in there that you interviewed and we talked bourbon for 20 mins or so. Ended up getting the tumble and dice barrel proof and it’s pretty great. 7 year Barrell proof mgp for 64$ hard to beat. Love the videos man
Small liquor stores are absolutely worth checking out. In the last few months I found 3 Stagg/Jrs at $79, 3 ETLs at $129, 5 Michters 10 Ryes at $199 and a bunch of other less allocated but still hard to find or older bottles for great prices. When I found those Staggs, ETLs and M10s I called all of my bourbon friends and ended up grabbing them all and spreading the love.
I had a partial bottle of a Calumet 16 and it was very good. Traditional bourbon notes but a good balance between oak and sweet. Those sample packs are great for trying new brands. I usually jump at those when I don't know anything about a brand I want to get into. Fistful of Bourbon is a good sip for someone just getting into bourbon. For the price it isn't a huge waste and the flavor is very light basic bourbon.
I'm in Iowa and my guess would be Cedar Ridge. It's weird to see a distiller that I've been seeing on the shelves for years and felt was no big deal, now getting some attention from outside the area. I've been wanting to try Rebel 10 but haven't been able to find it. $150 seems like it's pretty steep for that one though.
Go to Bottle's in Beverages on Sullivan's island, solid selection of Bourbon and other cool liquors!! Also stopped at Tupacz in Georgetown... Great store I learned about from you!!! And I went to the wrong palmetto wine and spirits!!!
I've had both the 15 and 16 Calumet. The 15 in my opinion had a medicinal cherry note. The 16 none at all... Tobacco, dark cherry, oak... I've purchased 3 the last 2 years. You gotta try the 16...
FYI....I like your content, also like that you do most of your hunting in SC. I spend a lot of time in Columbia and recently tried the Firefly Live single barrel. Tried my first, went back and bought 6 more bottles for my reserves. 110 and 120 proof. Wow!
@@Bourbon_Hunter I have not had much luck in SC. GA and TN are both 10x better for bourbon hunting. Its still fun to stop in all of the small SC stores. Did Florence Chapin and Columbia in the past month. Need to try Myrtle next...probably in the late fall after the tourists die down.
I would say you were either at Cat's Eye Distillery in Betterndorf, or Cedar Ridge Distillery where I live in Cedar Rapids or Templeton near Des Moines. All have interesting bourbons and ryes.
The Calumet 16 is fantastic. I let mine breathe for a few weeks tho, some (as did I) found it a bit harsh at opening. Massively underrated is the Calumet Small Batch (Green label) very good. I was not impressed with the 10yr, if you can find a bottle of Calumet 14yr, you should buy it, it has been discontinued. Crown Blackberry is awesome, if you mix with lemonade, mix with fresh squeezed, really brings out the flavor in the Blackberry. Cheers

Man oh man, I can't wait to travel so I can escape the stupidity around here. EHT Small batch, ya know, the bottom end....$55 MSRP, $149 here in town. Disgusting.
Prices are a little high. New Riff Single Barrel should be $57 and the High West Barbados Rum Barrel should be in the $68-$69. I would assume due to Mt P location things tend to be higher than the surrounding areas like Goose Creek. Great video Hunter!

Iowa is pretty small when it comes to distilleries. The one that does the most picks is Cedar Ridge. They have decent stuff, and they are the #1 bourbon in their state (they actually beat out Basil Hayden, and Jack Daniels as being the go-to well bourbon). They have a pretty basic rye bourbon, a very young wheated bourbon, and some single malts. Their best bottle's are their maple finished (Sir Maple) and the Double Barreled. Probably unlikely to sell those as single barrels but I highly recommend both. Their Sir Maple is like $30 and is better than Widow Jane Decadence. The only other option, in my opinion, is Cat's Eye. Cat's Eye is mostly sourced so that would be lower on my list of places to do a pick. Their Nassif Family Reserve is pretty decent but the price per bottle and lack of name recognition makes it hard to move. There is also Iowa Legendary but their product is pretty unusual and doing that as a barrel pick would be very risky because rye is harder to sell.
Highly recommend A Overholt if you want to try something new. That 10 year cask strength is going to be hard to find again. Hopefully they start doing more special release. Jim Beam seems to be trying to overhaul the brand.
@@Bourbon_Hunter All the bottles you looked at are a great value. And the cask strength 10 year is a good price too considering other similar aged / proof ryes are going for. If that was craft whiskey the price would be way higher.
It's a pretty decent bottle. I have a Sam Houston 15 and found that I prefer the Calumet 15 and 16 over it. The higher age statements are very small batches so there are actually a few different batches of the 15 and 16 floating around. ECBP A124 has still moves fast but is pretty findable. I think the supply on ECBP A124 is far lower because they knew the sub12 age statement would not be popular and they need to get back to 12+. Guessing B524 ends up being 12 years and is a bigger batch. The best A124 HH product was actually the Bernheim BP. I've been lucky enough to find every batch of the Bernheim BP and they keep getting better. I've actually found the Bernheim A124 more often than either batch of 2023. Most stores only get 1-3 bottles when they get it but people still sleep on them.
A124 Bernheim was insanely good, I thought I was slightly disappointed because it was super hot at first but after letting it settle, I couldn't put that bottle down. Only complaint was the cork was a little too fat for the hole and every time I'd open it up, it was just shredding the cork. Never had that problem with anything before. I ended up finishing my A124 off in like a week after I went back to it. (Cinnamon graham cracker)

We pay $43!! JD private select is the same, $49. But our barrel proof is $60 not $70.
Old Overholt 114 is a FAR better value than the 10 year, IMO. $40 for the 114 is pretty bad though - that bottle should be closer to $30. The BIB should be closer to $25 (but I'd pass on it if I had the option to buy 114). I consider Old Overholt 114 like OGD114 - it's extremely good for the price but has sharp edges that need more time to be great. That's why I expected the 10 year to be incredible but was left slightly disappointed. Old Overholt 114 can be sipped neat but is really just an ACE for making strong cocktails. It has a ton of rye whiskey flavor for 114 proof but the flavors are "spikey" and not cohesive. Oddly enough, the 10 year still had most of those spikes. The 10 year is something I'm glad I own but it pales in comparison to JD SBBP Rye and OF SBBP Rye... and it's more expensive.
Thats interesting to hear you say the 10 year still has sharp edges. Im curious to see if you do a blind what results would be for Old OverHolt Products
So people have LITERALLY been sleeping on Jim Beam Black for years?!? Why did no one tell me before the hype train left the station! That would make a great mixer
At smaller stores I usually find amazing bourbon but it’s usually dusties at full secondary. You shouldn’t have passed on that rebel 10 tho. VERY hard to find. I have an easier time finding pappy than I do rebel 10 in the wild
William Grant & Sons is the massive UK company behind the Scotch brands Glenfiddich, Balvenie and Monkey Shoulder. They also own gin, tequila, Irish whiskey and other spirits. In the US they bought Hudson whiskey in NY. Fist Full of Bourbon is their bourbon blend. It's solid for the price nothing special.

@@Bourbon_Hunter also scooped up a knob creek 18yr for 149
Niceeeeeee score on the KC18
If you can ever find the jim beam single barrels they are an amazing product for under 30 dollars also
Will do! Thank you for watching!
Calumet 16 is the most slept on 12+ year bottle
Im going to stop sleeping on it now! Thank you for watching!
We need to hook up for the LSU game in September. Rebel 10 is great but not at that price. $100 is a fair price.
Makes sense. Thank you for watching!
YAY!!! A hunter who buys chit !!!
I buy stuff every video brahhhh
@@Bourbon_Hunter YES, unlike many other Ytubers
DANG BRO, you look like a young Scott Mitchell 😂
Is that a good thing or a bad thing?
Old Overholt is Willett if I recall, so I’m guessing you’ll like it.
Beam
Not sure who makes it let me look
Jim Beam Product.
The Calumet 16 is exceptional 10. Look for rack starting with 4008 or 4009.
They have RACK #’s on there!!! The attention to detail is wild
@@Bourbon_Hunter or maybe they are making them up just to mess with us RB101 has a very good review of the 16 out there.
Small liquor stores and grocery store chains usually do good for me.
I totally agree! Thank you for watching
Those sample packs are good
Lowkey a great deal
1783 Heroes edition is a great bottle. I think you went to Cedar Ridge Distillery
🤷🏻♂️ idkkkkkkk but I can’t wait for yall to try my first barrel pick
That old Makers 46 cask would have been a good buy in the first store.
There was an old one? I must have no seen it. What time stamp was it?

Thank you
Old Overholt 114 is a FAR better value than the 10 year, IMO.
They weren't talking about it before they added the 7 year label. Rumor is that black label was a 6 year before they added the age statement.
So people have LITERALLY been sleeping on Jim Beam Black for years?!? Why did no one tell me before the hype train left the station! That would make a great mixer
Fistful of Bourbon is about what you'd expect for a 2 year product. I might pay $10 for it.
Yikes thanks for the heads up
The calumet 16 is the best of their offerings
Thats good to hear! Im
Sure its their most expensive too
I get knob creek 9yr for 27 flat up here in WA, but almost everything else is about 30-35% more for what you see. Wa taxes suck total ass.
At smaller stores I usually find amazing bourbon but it’s usually dusties at full secondary. You shouldn’t have passed on that rebel 10 tho. VERY hard to find. I have an easier time finding pappy than I do rebel 10 in the wild
Wait seriously? I see it about as much as I see laceny BP
That's 30 bucks cheaper than I've seen calumet 16 anywhere else. Its better than it has any right to be for the price.
I'd have gave that Rebecca Creek 10 yr a try for $70. I've heard the 16 yr is outstanding.
Hey Bourbon Hunter, can you recommend any butterscotch bombs? Dig the videos, keep em coming, cheers !
Frey Ranch sometimes can hit that note especially in their single barrels
New Riff rye is amazing.
So they say ive yet to try it
The old overholt is pretty good in my opinion and 20 bucks in Ohio
Ohio is the land of mystery that doesnt count 😂🥃 Just kidding cheers!
I spy an Early Times BiB that you didn't mention. Hard to tell what cap it was though
Try the old overholt 114 all day. Stay away from that davidson reserve
That red label Clyde Mays is a hitter
Ive had it and I agree! Its slept on!
Interesting! I had no clue the scotch lore went that deep! Thank you for sharing
For the money broken barrel is very good , hersey rye and there 115 is very good .
Fistful of Bourbon is decent for the price, I don’t find it good enough to call it a rebuy but it’s all right. And I found that Dickel Barrel Pick absolute garbage for the 55 bucks I paid, not great
Sounds like two strike outs.. I hope your next purchase is a hit 🥃
I’ve enjoyed the Broken Barrel bottles I opened
I might have gotten a bad single barrel from them or something because mine was horrendous. My buddy and I couldn’t believe a store picked it
@@Bourbon_Hunter sometimes you get a bad barrel my friend
Calumet 16 is awesome
So many people are telling me this and now im Feeling dumb. I need to try a sample first
Cedar ridge?… or Cats Eye Distillery (Obtanium)
Never heard of Cats eye before 🤷🏻♂️
Hmmmm, Cats Eye is up that way too…
🤷🏻♂️🤔
picked me up one of the century Vodkas by Harlen Wheatley 100 time distilled, not huge vodka drinker but couldn’t pass it up
Is that the true good stuff? Im not much into Vodka myself
@@Bourbon_Hunter Have not tried it yet waiting to share it with my dad who is a big vodka guy. Only vodka I really like is wheatley so i’m hoping it’s much better
“They don’t miss at heaven hill” may be a bit generous 😂😂
Okay Mellow Corn. But thats about the only one I can think of right now. What do you not like from them?
@@Bourbon_Hunter Evan Williams single barrels are hella overpriced imo
Never cared for Ezra Brooks or Rebel Single barrels either, but that’s just me! Cheers man always love ur content
I hear ya on the Ezra sometimes but the EW Single barrel for $28 bucks is a great bottle so maybe we agree to disagree! Thank you for the kind words 🤙🏼🥃 Cheers!
@@Bourbon_Hunter oh damn here in KY EW single barrel is 50 bucks!! I think that’s where we differ lol. The KY market is kinda messed up lol regular ole Russells single barrels are 85 bucks!

I always ask! Most of the time my salesmen pitch is enough
Beluga is really really good. rare here.
Apparently so! Ive never heard of it before! Thank you for watching 🥃🔥
I've scored 3 bottles of Calumet 16yr for $110. It's a delicious cherry bomb.
