Captain of speedbird 183 has a sense of humour. Your son said 15 minute delay on southbound traffic. Captain said we are going West. ATC controller said that was the same thing. Catain said he would amend his compass. Brillaint.... Great to know these guys have a sense of humour. Fab video.... ATC Staff certainly have their hands full at all times. I am still laughing at interaction .... Brillant.
Great Video really clear and sharp, I really Appreciate good camera when I see it and heathrow is always the airport I traveled to when I go Home on holiday. or Manchester airport I am seeing family that lives there Now. Thanks for Posting the video
a big well done for a great (allbeit small) insight into LHR's tower....would love to see more like this, this is pure heaven for a keen aviation enthusiast like myself
LMAO! Yes that's a wicked job you got there, I wanted to do that when I was younger but like most young teenage lads they get distracted and focus on original ambitions is way out, but I landed my dream job in aviation and that's an Engineer at Rolls-Royce working on the Build Line & in Test Facility for the Trent 700, 900, and 1000 Engines. I'm in my 2nd tear of my Apprenticeship and at the end of my Training I'll be a qualified Aeronautical Engineer in Aircraft Power. LOVE IT:)
the QNH (in millibars) is the pressure setting for the area which allows the pitot tubes (which provide the altitude & speed) to make adjustments to make them more accurate
these are standard instrument departure (SID) routings which take the aircraft into the airways system usually named after a radio beacon with an alphanumeric suffix
@joemaddock16 I think so Apparently it stops planes still starting up on the taxiways - so they're ready for taxi ASAP to prevent traffic jams. So I assume they detach all the jetways and baggage carts go away, start up (they have been approved) then go to ground for pushback/taxi
Or millibars. Depends on where you are. The definition of QNH is the pressure by the surface of the sea; hence it will give pilots the altitude AMSL (Above Mean Sea Level). But you are correct; hecto-Pascal is used in most of the countries using QNH-settings.
nope. in LHR the phrase ''start up approved'' has the meaning that the flight flight plan is now active.Engines start up are approved only during push back
Always found the call to delivery with aircraft type and QNH in the UK a bit cumbersome, but I suppose there were some incidents in the past that mandated it
@aryadoroudian No by the looks he was there around 10-12pm. Got that by the QF and SIA A388 which both Depart around 11-12pm. :) The ATC is just added I believe and is not the same time as the video was shot
Awesome video xD I went up there in May 2010 part of Year 10 work experience.. its abit like WOW when you get out of the lift its just glass around you lol. Shame about the weather as the view is even better on a clearer day. I thought wasn't allowed to upload video from there?
For the ATC's sake, I hope this video was compressed in time, otherwise he earned every pence of his salary that evening! Thanks for the excellent presentation. Good work.
LHR looks busy ! already operating close to 98% capacity. Heard that London mayor, Boris proposed to build a brand new airport @ Thames Estuary i.e with rail, subway links, 4 runways, etc. Hope it comes up soon. coz. already the hardly any breathing space bet flights.
You're robably right there. The runways at Heathrow run East West anyway so I don't see where the confusion would have come from. Unless of course routes that day were being directed South prior to turning East or West. Oh well.
Not necessarily for first class. On A380s they can load/unload both decks at once, on other planes passengers might be sent through both dependant on the seating configuration of the plane.
@ALB437 You haven't got to be dead quiet up there.. You're not allowed on the level where the ATC guys are anyway. When I went up there got a tour from someone at NATS, very friendly!
@BritishArrow - The pilot was trying to be clever. A CPT departure goes west but its a South turn out from Heathrow therefore its still considered a Southbound Departure.
@eaglebyrnes8 I suggest you do training with NATS if your in the UK. They only hire 4 times a year so check their website. Also it takes about 3 years to become an air traffic controller and you must work where they tell you to. GOOD LUCK
@FF35Pilot you seem to know quite a bit about aviation, at the very start, it focuses on 4 planes, two of which are British airways. Are they both Boeing 777s or are they 767s? I'm guessing they are 777s because I've never seen a 767 for BA...
Haha.. great at 5:30. BA183 fully ready to New York! ATC: stand-by we've 15 minutes delay on South-Bound-DEP BA183: .... but.. we're going west!!?? ATC: well it's the same thing! BA183: ... aahh OK! Just great reaction from the BA Pilot :-P
you probably wouldn't be impressed at any location. These are all very quiet locations (apart from ATC but that is just because the aircon is noisy!) where not much happens that you can get excited about.
Quick question - When ATC say "Start approved, hold position", does that mean pushback is approved?? Or the aircraft are starting engines in their respecting parking bays?
I would be alone and very quiet and would not say a single word. (Do also have very quiet Nikons - semi-pro). In 2010 I had tried to find out the best place to shoot pictures and the best was the top of a parking opposite to Terminal 3 I think. To far compared to what you show on your video. Early 80s I could fly in the cockpit of a 727 from Tunis Air from Djerba to Munich, landing included, and you won't believe it, without saying a single word!

What a view!! I swear bro, i can seat right up there all day long, & drink boxes of beers just enjoying all the action going on & never get bored-
a big well done for a great (allbeit small) insight into LHR's tower....would love to see more like this, this is pure heaven for a keen aviation enthusiast like myself
Wow what a great opportunity to visit the tower you had! Amazing. It's a totally different world from up there.
Very nice airport! In my opinion one of a wonderful airports! Thanks for sharing this.
Thanks from Brasil.
Best video i've seen!!!
good job with the radio overlay!
Simply amazing
I work for BA and my manager arranged a visit up the tower - it was amazing I could have stayed there all day!!!
This was really well shot and incredibly interesting. Thanks for sharing
JUST BEAUTIFUL!!! Love the A340s!
Look forward to more Heathrow tower videos.
Well done to include ATC transmissions.
LMAO! Great video. Heathrow has always been a very exciting airport. Thanks.
the QNH (in millibars) is the pressure setting for the area which allows the pitot tubes (which provide the altitude & speed) to make adjustments to make them more accurate
Never heard or seen anything like this before.
Very interesting, thanks so much.
Excellent footage, many thanks for posting.
Really enjoyed listening + watching that, thanks for uploading
these are standard instrument departure (SID) routings which take the aircraft into the airways system usually named after a radio beacon with an alphanumeric suffix
Air New Zealand Jumbo coming in was good . Great video.
@18june29
QNH ...It is a pressure setting used by pilots, air traffic control (ATC) it will give you your altitude above mean sea level in your area
Heathrow is a fascinating place!
this isawesome mate thank you and hope you upload more from Heathrow tower in better weather....
@joemaddock16
I think so
Apparently it stops planes still starting up on the taxiways - so they're ready for taxi ASAP to prevent traffic jams. So I assume they detach all the jetways and baggage carts go away, start up (they have been approved) then go to ground for pushback/taxi
Amazing view! If you did a timelapse of some of the gates in front over the period of a day it would be the most amazing video!
Or millibars. Depends on where you are.
The definition of QNH is the pressure by the surface of the sea; hence it will give pilots the altitude AMSL (Above Mean Sea Level). But you are correct; hecto-Pascal is used in most of the countries using QNH-settings.
Wow, how do they keep control of all this!?! Great job guys!
+Redfern Model Railway lot's and lot's of aspirin.
My Son is the Air Traffic Controller on the video and as I work at Heathrow myself he arranged the visit for me.
@ALB437
Visitors are allowed but due to the workload of the controllers I suspect that they don't like to take too many people.
When he just clears startup +hold position is that if they got clearance from the Datalink system (like SAS MD-82, I think the alitalia maybe also)
THIS IS AMAZING THANKS MATE .....LOVE IT
i WOULD LOVE TO BE THERE AS WELL ....
I LOVE it! The whole thing! NICELY DONE and THANKS!
@13jam100
Speedbird is the call sign for all British Airway international flights. All BA domestic flights go by the call sign "Shuttle".
Them A340's :D who can't love it !
nope. in LHR the phrase ''start up approved'' has the meaning that the flight flight plan is now active.Engines start up are approved only during push back
oh boy this is great! Wish I can head down there...
That Air New Zealand B747-400; great capture!
Speedbird is the British Airways Callsign. Shuttle is British Airways also for Domestic flights.
Always found the call to delivery with aircraft type and QNH in the UK a bit cumbersome, but I suppose there were some incidents in the past that mandated it
@JaCkErS59 That's British Airways. 'Shuttle' is their domestic services. (Flights to Newcastle, Manchester, Edinburgh etc)
Nice video. Well done Keith.
maybe because of gate reassignment(s) - e.g. after a night-stop or unexpected changes in flights (diversion, cancellation, ...)
@aryadoroudian No by the looks he was there around 10-12pm. Got that by the QF and SIA A388 which both Depart around 11-12pm. :) The ATC is just added I believe and is not the same time as the video was shot
Jamie, He needed a few A levels, but I'm not sure how many though. And a hard couple of years training too!
The BA planes are mainly 777's, but there is on 767. BA still have a few 767's left
QNH, altitude above mean sea level/pressure on the airport, used in dep/app until transition altitute
Really good video!! Thnx a lot for the upload
Awesome video xD I went up there in May 2010 part of Year 10 work experience.. its abit like WOW when you get out of the lift its just glass around you lol.
Shame about the weather as the view is even better on a clearer day.
I thought wasn't allowed to upload video from there?
Very nice video, thank you very much
Keeep doing this... This is really nice !
it's from the old BOAC days, they used the callsign as they had the fastest aircraft at the time.
For the ATC's sake, I hope this video was compressed in time, otherwise he earned every pence of his salary that evening! Thanks for the excellent presentation. Good work.
@TheDraytonk This is what I love about You Tube. How else would I ever get to experience that? Great video, thanx.
So what usually causes departure/arrival delays, other than weather. Obviously IMC is not an issue for the heavies
LHR looks busy ! already operating close to 98% capacity. Heard that London mayor, Boris proposed to build a brand new airport @ Thames Estuary i.e with rail, subway links, 4 runways, etc. Hope it comes up soon. coz. already the hardly any breathing space bet flights.

magandang kuha ah !!!!!!!!!!!nice
I like these tower view videos - something new.
great stuff,liked,subscribed.keep em coming
Not necessarily for first class. On A380s they can load/unload both decks at once, on other planes passengers might be sent through both dependant on the seating configuration of the plane.
I work at Heathrow and I am lucky enough to have my son working in the tower
@robert4810 I think Delivery said, "It's the same thing," because another pilot said, "Who invented the compass?" lol
@ALB437 You haven't got to be dead quiet up there.. You're not allowed on the level where the ATC guys are anyway. When I went up there got a tour from someone at NATS, very friendly!
Hi Excellent Video..
that's great! hope you're gonna make other videos like this one!!!
@BritishArrow - The pilot was trying to be clever. A CPT departure goes west but its a South turn out from Heathrow therefore its still considered a Southbound Departure.
Great video, thank you so much for sharing. It must be fun being able to visit the heathrow control tower. Btw is Emirates 4 is an A380?
Nice vid, very busy airport :O
@eaglebyrnes8 I suggest you do training with NATS if your in the UK. They only hire 4 times a year so check their website. Also it takes about 3 years to become an air traffic controller and you must work where they tell you to.
GOOD LUCK
AAL and BAW are partner airlines - lots of codeshares so yeh I guess it is like a mini hub.(the odd AALs can be seen at Terminal 5)
@Byron10301 or the Qatar is a different variant - A342 is short, A346 is very long (I think longest in world)
Do you have any opinion on the UBCD396XT both in terms of for air scanning, and in general? I am pondering on buying one as my first scanner.
American Airlines seems to have quite a strong position at LHR
is it a semi hub or focus city???
@FF35Pilot you seem to know quite a bit about aviation, at the very start, it focuses on 4 planes, two of which are British airways. Are they both Boeing 777s or are they 767s? I'm guessing they are 777s because I've never seen a 767 for BA...
The A340-600 is long and beautiful!
Haha.. great at 5:30.
BA183 fully ready to New York!
ATC: stand-by we've 15 minutes delay on South-Bound-DEP
BA183: .... but.. we're going west!!??
ATC: well it's the same thing!
BA183: ... aahh OK!
Just great reaction from the BA Pilot :-P
great video i loved watching that thank you :)
I love how the South African A340 pilot says his call-sign :D
yeah! that had me chuckling!!! thanks for the transcript!
Love the Springbok!
you probably wouldn't be impressed at any location. These are all very quiet locations (apart from ATC but that is just because the aircon is noisy!) where not much happens that you can get excited about.
What about start approved, hold position? Would that not mean that you can start the engines but you have to wait for the push?
my favourite airport for connections! :)
Amazing video, great stuff :)
Quick question - When ATC say "Start approved, hold position", does that mean pushback is approved?? Or the aircraft are starting engines in their respecting parking bays?
"Cleared to Brussels", sweet, means I've been handling the flight at the arrival :D
So please tell me the complete & correct explanation.
since when was south, west? heheheh I know its probably the same departure, but the pilot didn't :)
OH my gosh. How you get onto heathrow tower? on the website? i got the blasted iphone app. :(
Good experience to feel how things work from the ATC itself! How were you allowed there to film in the first place?
'Who invented the compass?' Classic XD what was the response? anyone hear it?
Do more of these videos! Very interesting :)
Thats one busy airport!!!
How many planes take off and land from Heathrow a day?
Is the radio reception from the Tower it self or from a small radio?
[it's just reception is weak on some planes.]
No it's to start the engines. DEL clears them for engine start, gorund clears them to push.
the Quatar 340-600X is a sexy beast !
Springbak 221 lol. Is the South African taking the hand out of the controller?
I would be alone and very quiet and would not say a single word. (Do also have very quiet Nikons - semi-pro). In 2010 I had tried to find out the best place to shoot pictures and the best was the top of a parking opposite to Terminal 3 I think. To far compared to what you show on your video. wow.. Thai 747 looks pretty small next to Virgin A346 =)
Awesome view! This is evening in Heathrow? what time was this taken?
@TheDraytonk Is that your son on the delivery frequency?
