I was born and raised in Milton and now reside in nearby Pace. I grew up approximately one mile from the old L&N swing bridge. When I started as a deputy sheriff, my first assignment was Court Security. Not a day went by that I didn't see the old swing bridge. (I am retired from that career and now drive trucks for the Ocala based Cheney Brother). Now that CSX no longer utilizes the Tallahassee Subdivision since its sale, that bridge stays open more than closed during the daytime hours. Excellent video as always. I’ve had 6-8 hour days riding my motorcycle along BNSF, UP, and KCS mainlines without seeing a single train, and I’ve had days where as soon as one passes me another leaves a siding headed right at me. The joys of railfanning!!

Thanks for having us along for the ride. Good to hear about CSX's plans to increase clearances on the A line to accommodate double stacks. That makes the new inter-modal yard that they're building in Rocky Mount, NC make more sense to me.
Love the mention of the Howard Street Tunnel. Lots of discussion up here about the possible upgrade. Things need to get better for sure. The fire that occurred years ago at the tunnel is still on the minds of people up here.
I've always wondered why they aren't talking about lowering the floor rather than raising the ceiling in that tunnel. After all, there are only three feet of distance between the ceiling and the Howard Street pavement. That's not a lot of room to work in.
If memory serves, they lowered the tracks through the one Detroit-Windsor tunnel. Maybe it has to do with how much clearance they need to create? I also wonder the same about overpasses. Any Civil Engineers watching who can help us laypeople?
@@rickboivin7732 if the tunnel has a "bottom" in it, and I assume most do for structural support of walls of tunnel, it may be simpler to go up. but you'd think there's more than 2-3' of roadbed (gravel) in there. taller may cause problem with vibration frequency overhead for overall structure. depends somewhat on original structure material, age, etc. yeah, C.E. here. not familiar with tunnels, only bridges.

Great video, One thing, there were four railroads into River Junction south of Chattahoochee at one time. The ACL had a line from Climax Georgia off the Waycross to Dothan main line. The line was used for coal delivery to the Florida State Hospital in Chattahoochee. Love all your work.
Absolutely outstanding. From the commentary, editing, graphics, knowledge, - the complete package. Its like you have a team of 12. They only item left is we need to do a fundraiser to get you out of Florida occasionally so theres no more 1 or 2 train days.

Nice catch in Hammond, LA! It’s a great railfanning spot, there’s not many trains, but there’s a lot of variety. The symbol of that first train was CN A41971 that runs from Geismar, LA to Memphis, TN. I actually remember hearing the crew talking on the radio and their first engine actually ended up overheating further down the line. They shut it down and kept going, but I’m not sure if they made it to Memphis without any other problems. Keep up the amazing work!
A beautiful job, as expected. Having no car nowadays hampers my railfanning, even locally, except when I can bum a ride from my brother-in-law on one of his forays! However! Two corrections: First -- Hammond, Louisiana, was on the Mid-American Mainline of the Illinois Central, not the GM&O, which came into the state from the northeast. As noted though, a stop for the "City of New Orleans", both the fabled classic chocolate and orange version of song, and Amtrak's, not so fabled. Second -- Chattahoochee (River Junction) was served by four railroads, as the Atlantic Coast Line came in there as well. This was a line from Climax east of Bainbridge, built by Henry Plant in order to capture freight from the west for Savannah. As a side note. Chattahoochee and River Junction were separate places and only combined into a single municipality around 1950. (I think -- I looked it up once and don't recall the exact year.) (I have a few extra copies of the"Official Guide" from the mid-Sixties. If you'd like one, let me know next time you're in the area and I'll give you one.)
Ha!! Thanks Larry!! Yes, as I told another commenter above, I completely forgot about the Plant line into Chattahoochee. I wonder if there's any visible remnant of it? Thanks for the correction on the GM&O. I thought all that territory around there was ex-GM&O.
@@distantsignal Looking at Maps programs or Google Earth, it's pretty easy to spot the old roadbed from the satellite view, though what's obvious from the air is less so on the ground. Checking a few Streetviews showed not a trace of crossings. I dont know when this line was abandoned. It took a while after the 1967 merger before a lot of abandonments happened. Maybe during the purges of the mid-1980s. Long enough for Mother Nature to hide things.
First time seeing a DPU on a intermodal consist. I live adjacent to the CSX CN&L line MP6.02 and see coal drags daily with DPU’s either mid-train or at the rear.
Nice to see that you were in south Louisiana. Not enough quality content is made in my home state. And I've learned that with days with little to no trains, you learn to appreciate days with several trains. Nicely done as always.
4:18 When I was a kid Chattahoochee had only one connotation, insane asylum. It also meant that beautiful but extremely rough on your feet decking material. Man, it was murder on your bare feet. 5:17 I love the roar of those big powerful diesel engines.
Awesome videos! My 3 year old daughter loves trains and I show her your videos. We live 2 miles from Tropicana in Bradenton and every time I try and take her to see the train cross the river, it's never running :( I did take her to the train platform in Plant City a few months back.
Thanks for videoing all these trains! I'm such a suspicious person that when I pull off the road and watch or take some pictures it seems I get harrassed by the local police. I use to watch from the end of a dead end street next to the tracks (20 years ago) where there are 3 NS lines and easily seen signals all set on a nice curve it is just perfect. But then they built a water treatment plant which then made me even more suspicious post 9/11. Even now if I see a train I will half watch the train and half watch for my local police agency. It's especially aggravating after volunteering for 20 years on the local Rescue Squad (of which I got my Life Membership) but none of that means much to them anymore and that's a sad comment about today's society. We finally got Amtrak to the next city over, one train to Boston and one train back each day but that's better than not having any service at all. Thanks again. Be safe and Happy Easter!

I was raise by mobile Alabama to Jackson Tenn. line just north of laurel Ms. It's a fallen flag for certain , I have a pic from when I was three years old standing by it . it was abandoned years ago and now I own about 3/4 of a mile of it . it was a good railroad that was bought to shutdown by IC .
Now I know where that bridge is in Baltimore as I'm from up that way in Waldorf, MD. I never knew that, thank you so much for that information. Yeah, the Port of B'more been realatively dead for some time now, that new freight would definitely be a shot in the arm!

Hammond, LA was where the first season of "In the Heat of the Night" TV show was filmed. The seasons following were filmed in Covington, GA not far from where I live. There were a few railroad scenes in a number of the shows.

Hello Danny. Greetings from a new subscriber from Finland. It is very different railfanning here. In Finland we have this thing called JKV or "Junien kulunvalvonta". In english it would be Automatic train protection. With the help of that, we can see every train in real time on the map. Radio is not used anymore at least much. Signals also are very different here in Finland. Main signals are pretty much same as there. Three lights ( Red, Green and Amber ) Main signals can show three different aspects. Red means Stop, Green means Go at full speed, green and amber means go, but maximum speed is 35 km/h. Then we have also distant signals. These are equipped with four lights. Two greens and two ambers. Distant signal in Finland can show three different aspects. Two greens means "next main signal is green. Two ambers means "Next main signal is red". Amber and green means "Next main signal is Green and amber". Main signald are absolute, but Distant signals are not. Indeed they are usually at same mast. So....If you survived reading my horrible English, thats good! If you are interested in finnish trains, consider subscribing my channel.
The Depot in Hammond La is ,if I’m not mistaken, the passenger depot used in the movie In The Heat Of The Night! It’s where Sydney Porter as Virgil Tibbs is sitting waiting for his train back to Philadelphia and is stopped by the officer from the fictional Sparta Police Department! Also where Rod Steiger as Chief Bill Gillespie says goodbye to his now friend and colleague at the end of the movie!
Hi Danny, great video as always. I live near Chattahoochee and was a clerk for SCL/CSX for a total of 18 years. Actually before the SCL merger, the Atlantic Coast LIne also entered Chattahoochee via the branch to Climax, Ga. on the Dothan Sub, making 4 railroads that came into town. I had an Aunt that lived on N. Lipona Rd. in Tally, I heard you mention that street in a video from a few years ago, so a lot of the same old stomping grounds I'm sure. Too bad can't message through TH-cam any more, would love to meet up when you're in the area. Keep up the good work.

Danny, I know how you feel about 1 and 2 train days. I railfan on Friday afternoons at Swan Lake, MS. on the CN Yazoo Subdivision. Some days all I see is one train. Then some days like last Friday I caught 5. Those are rare, but sure make the afternoon more enjoyable!
Hey @Distant Signal, Recently I caught a BNSF train on the CSX line 2 BNSF locomotives and a CN locomotive and normally I don’t get those CN’s often. It’s pretty rare for me in NY on the CSX Double track main in NY.
Hammond is interesting place because of the diverging line down to the chemical coast.. It doesn't see many trains, but the ones it does are just like the train you filmed.
Hey Danny! Love the video like always! Fun fact River Junction actually used to have 4 railroad connections. The Alantic Coast Line had a connection from Climax GA to Chattahoochee. Would love to meet up with you one day along the new Florida Gulf and Atlantic

Red means Stop, Green means Go at full speed, green and amber means go, but maximum speed is 35 km/h. Then we have also distant signals. These are equipped with four lights. Two greens and two ambers. Distant signal in Finland can show three different aspects. Two greens means "next main signal is green. Two ambers means "Next main signal is red". Amber and green means "Next main signal is Green and amber". Main signald are absolute, but Distant signals are not. Indeed they are usually at same mast. The Depot in Hammond La is ,if I’m not mistaken, the passenger depot used in the movie In The Heat Of The Night! It’s where Sydney Porter as Virgil Tibbs is sitting waiting for his train back to Philadelphia and is stopped by the officer from the fictional Sparta Police Department! Also where Rod Steiger as Chief Bill Gillespie says goodbye to his now friend and colleague at the end of the movie!

Hi Danny, great video as always. I live near Chattahoochee and was a clerk for SCL/CSX for a total of 18 years. Actually before the SCL merger, the Atlantic Coast LIne also entered Chattahoochee via the branch to Climax, Ga. on the Dothan Sub, making 4 railroads that came into town. I had an Aunt that lived on N. Lipona Rd. in Tally, I heard you mention that street in a video from a few years ago, so a lot of the same old stomping grounds I'm sure. Too bad can't message through TH-cam any more, would love to meet up when you're in the area. Keep up the good work.

Danny, I know how you feel about 1 and 2 train days. I railfan on Friday afternoons at Swan Lake, MS. on the CN Yazoo Subdivision. Some days all I see is one train. Then some days like last Friday I caught 5. Those are rare, but sure make the afternoon more enjoyable!

Hey @Distant Signal, Recently I caught a BNSF train on the CSX line 2 BNSF locomotives and a CN locomotive and normally I don’t get those CN’s often. It’s pretty rare for me in NY on the CSX Double track main in NY.
Hammond is interesting place because of the diverging line down to the chemical coast.. It doesn't see many trains, but the ones it does are just like the train you filmed.
