    Now, it is not entirely true that Americans are bad tourists. As a bartender in Oslo, I have many examples of the opposite. Just want to bring up, in a long string of great American tourists, an elderly couple who dropped by our bar/restaurant just after disembarking their cruiseship. They were to spend a day in Oslo, before taking the trip over to Bergen (in Vestland). They were super sweet, so we gave them a little extra attention, as they had their 60th wedding anniversary. And they tipped richely and decided that they wanted to take a couple of days more in Oslo. And they did their lunches and dinners at our place. I’ll never forget them. The sweetest elderly American couple I’ve ever met ❤

    9:30 It’s 6 PM/8 PM on weekdays and 4 PM/6 PM on saturdays. The time depends on how much % alcohol it contains. You can still buy alcohol at bars and restaurants, so it’s not like alcohol is impossible to get after a certain time.

    • @Hammer1987
      @Hammer1987 4 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      Yup, as I understand it the reasoning behind it is to prevent impulse purchases and people who have already started drinking from buying more. It simply requires that you plan ahead a little, and buy what you need earlier in the day, if you're gonna party. Alcoholism is a non-trivial problem here in Norway, but I'm not sure how effective the time restrictions are in regard to this issue.

      @@Hammer1987 As an former alcoholic used to limited hours, it is no problem to work around it at all. Like any drug, after doing the same shit every day for a prolonged time you get routines how to make it as effecient as possible.
      Those laws are probably there because of old conservatist laws, and politicians use it as a justification to keep the system in place.

    • @carolinecordelia
      @carolinecordelia 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@Hammer1987 They're not working at all for people that are alcoholics, they refer to the grocery store as the " ølutsalget" (beer store) and they know exactly when you can buy the alcohol, it's the people who unexpectedly got invited to a party or that are hosting a big party that get affected by this. I used to work in a grocery store and it opened at 7, and this lady came to the cash register at about 730 with her whole cart full of beer and other kinds of alcoholic drinks you can get at the grocery store, but when she was going to pay I had to tell her that she couldn't buy it for half an hour as I just wasn't able do it as the cash register is locked and she went mad at me, but I just called the store manager and he told her the exact same thing. It was so embarrassing for me to not be able to help her, and the store lost thousands of kroner as she just sat the cart by the register and furiously left the shop. And then you have the 5 to 6 beer buyer (on Saturdays), he that always comes into the store five minutes before the beer sale closes, and everyone is letting him go first so he can make it to the register. The register is exact and if it's 18:01 (6.01 PM) you're too late and have to wait until monday. Most people just plan ahead, but since beer and any alcoholic beverages are so expensive people usually don't buy more so they have a little extra for another time, especially if you're 18 and don't have a lot of money. I usually got my beer on Friday or even on Thursday when I was young and couldn't afford anything else, and before I was 20 and could get hard liquor. I didn't like beer, so I have not had one since about 1996-1997, after that I usually had martini bianco or Pisang abon for some reason, it didn't taste good at all 😂 and we mixed it with a lemon soda like sprite. 😂 I don't think I have had alcohol since, I don't even remember, maybe 2017 or something as I got sick and can't drink any alcohol, but I really didn't like it so it's not like I miss it, but people always tell me I should drink so I can have some fun too, like I can't enjoy a party without an alcoholic drink at 49 😂. I have been asked if I'm christian or if I'm pregnant, that's hilarious now that I'm old and passed baby time a long time ago. 😂
      People should not put trash on the street or in nature, and I have actually told grown up people to pick up their trash pretending I saw they "lost" it, and they usually is somewhat embarrassed and take the trash to the trash can, but some people that are from other countries originally just look at me like I'm the crazy one and drop it in front of me like a 2 year old, and I don't usually give up until they just get the trash into the trash can. I used to work in a kindergarden and tell them that a 2 year old kid can do it so there's no excuse for them to leave trash on the ground. I was brought up with always bringing the trash home if there's no trash can, while my friends just threw it on the ground and I had to bring their trash home too if they didn't listen to me, but they usually did as they were afraid that I would get angry, as I got mad when I was angry. I just don't get why it's so hard to take the trash and put in the nearest trash can, even if it's in front of a house and you don't know who lives there it's better to use their trash can than to leave litter on the ground. Not many would get angry if people put a paper from a chocolate bar or their dog poop in your trash, just put it in the right trash can.

      I think the number 10 is not true, you actually can assume this if you meet people between 6-70 and they look and speak Norwegian. If they speak some other language you should expect them to not speak a lot of English, but most people actually speak English even if they have a foreign descent.

    There's a piece of advice that *should* have come with #11: Make appropriate preparations when you go hiking!
    Too many tourists show up in jeans and sandals for rough 10 mile hikes, with barely any water, food or extra clothing. Weather can change quickly, with the risk of getting lost (or even die) in the mountains. This even applies to "tourist friendly" hikes like the Pulpit Rock.

    02:50 That's the difference between Norway and the USA, in Norway you CAN tip, and tipping is normal - normal tipping is done to reward good or excellent service, - while in the USA you HAVE to tip, and tipping is not normal - as in, you are expected to tip for even the worst service given, and just regular service that's expected of the worker to give, and if you don't tip, you'd probably not want to go back to that place again, as you never know what kind of stuff they might put in your food.

    • @John-19k20
      @John-19k20 4 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      06:14 It also depends in Norway, though removing the shoes is the default thing to do if you are uncertain and don't wish to ask.

      09:26 I'm not too familiar with the law surrounding alcohol, but I'm fairly certain the only alcohol that the state has monopoly on is whatever alcohol is required to be sold from Vinmonopolet alone, and that means that the alcohol sold in grocery stores - beer, cider, alcopops, hard seltzer I think are all the ones sold - is not exclusively sold by the state.
      10:00 The alcohol you can buy at groceries are for sale until 8 pm weekdays and 6pm Saturdays (as long as that hasn't changed, at least). As for Vinmonopolet, those are the general closing hours, but these can differ depending on the location. As for what people at work do? If they have friends or family, they usually ask them to go buy some for them, assuming they know friends or family that don't have work, aside from that, Vinmonopolet also offers delivery options for online orders for anyone that prefers that.

    • @John-19k20

      11:00 Ok, I have limited experience with parties, but I do know it isn't like in the USA where the host is expected to provide the alcohol, and if movies are anything to go by, where they buy big casks of beer for the parties. What people do in Norway is bring their own alcohol to the party, the Host only provides the location and anything else is optional, though I guess a good host would also provide the music? Anyway, there is still a big emphasis on alcohol at parties in Norway, it's just that who provides said alcohol is different between USA and Norway, and people tend to get drunk at private parties before hitting the town to go to the pub or bar as those drinks are filthy expensive.

    I would say it would be quite unusual, to not tip in restaurants i Norway. There are some places where it is indeed included, and even not allowed, but it is not yet prevalent, and for the vast majority, you add around 10%. In bars and pubs, a few kroner tip when you buy yourself a beer, is also very common. And you will easily understand that it really is expected, because when you pay, with your credit card on a terminal (we usually never use cash anymore), you will be presented with the price for your drink, but then will have to put in the final sum yourself. This is for your tip, which can be small. Not required, you can decide not to add anything, but most people do.

The stores my still be open but sales are not allowed. On Sundays sales are not allowed. For anything stronger than 4.7 ABV you have to go to the government controlled stores(Vinmonopolet). In Norway, you should never focus on what not to do, but always on what you _should_ do. Norway has an invisible honor culture and if someone has to tell you what to do, you have lost yours a while ago. If you focus on what not to do, you'll end up doing the bare minimum, which is dishonerable. If you focus on what you _should_ do, you might do a little more than is expected, but that's respectable. So it's not «don't be oblivious», but rather «be aware». A candy wrapper or plastic bag on the sidewalk in late or early year can kill an elderly person, because if there's snow or ice, it creates zero friction and they can slip and break a thigh. Be aware.
    So for instance, it's not «don't litter», but rather «leave no trace». Negative focus creates negative outcome. If you have a camp, it's not sufficient to take your trash with you; you should make your camp disappear before you leave, including dispersing the campfire by hand to make sure all embers are out. If you're not comfortable doing it by hand, you haven't put out the fire.

    The reason the restaurants don’t pay the waiters better, is that you keep paying tips (their wage). If Americans stopped tipping, this would result in lower wages for waiters, less waiters wiling to work, restaurants not being able to run due to waiter shortage, restaurants being forced to pay higher wages, resulting in tipping culture being obsolete.

      I think we Americans so often travel by highways or major roads and take the fastest, most direct routes in our commutes to our jobs, when shopping, or visiting friends and relatives that we forget that the natural wonders that exist in the incredible topographical differences in each state are often found in locations outside of our daily routines. You don’t have to go to famous national parks to find the beauty of the natural world but you do have to go a bit out of your way sometimes. I think the striking thing in Norway is that nature is simply always surrounding you, unhidden, just around the corner, in both the cities and rural areas. In the U.S., our cities and suburbs have “cultivated” the land for ease of human habitat and so Nature has become very easy to miss if you aren’t looking for it.

    Trash is an eyesore everywhere, and that includes cities. If you don't want to live in trashy surroundings, you don't throw trash around you on the streets just because you may have to carry it for a few steps until you find a trash can. I have never understood the need some people seem to have to litter their surroundings wherever they go. I'm pretty sure they don't throw trash on the floors around their own homes, so why do it elsewhere?

      Yeah, the more accurate way to put it would be to say there is relatively little casual everyday drinking in Norway compared to a lot of other countries because that would be too expensive for most, but there is on the other hand plenty of party/binge drinking culture going on.

When u have a king where slogan is "Everything for Norway" it shows how our king feels about Norway. King of Norway cant vote, and his family cant vote either. They cant make any remark of what side of politics their on.
    So... dont do any remarks about our king. We know first hand our king is not perfect, but it works very well

    11:02 That has happened multiple times near me during winter to large vehicles because they follow Google Maps. There are signs in Norwegian and English telling them it's closed. And when they meet the gate, they have to reverse and find a large enough place to turn. Some of them have accidentally ended up off the road. Every one I've heard this happening to is foreigners.
    Luckily Google Maps has fixed that problem. So now when they want to drive between places, it tells you the best available path. I've checked it myself and it gives me the next best option.

      It is true that we usually tip, but it is not strictly necessary. It is something that came to Norway with American movies, and today many Norwegians are more aware that it is not necessary at all, and an additional expense in a country that is already very expensive to live in. Therefore, more and more people limit tipping, and encourage foreigners not to do so. Norway is already too expensive, and the reason is that everyone gets a living wage, including those who work in the restaurants. We do not tip any other groups, and it does not make sense for a group to have special treatment.
      At the same time, it's a way for people who earn well to flash money in a country where it's usually not well-regarded to do so, so those who like to show off keep the tipping culture alive.

    Tipping in Norway are mostly when eat at restaurants or pub or similar, where feel the service are above expected. The products prices have been calculated with all costs, where the salaries are also included that you do a decent job. Often a tip can also be that round up, 5-15% are OK. Most use credit cards, Visa and Master, often AmEx goes too. If really want physical money NOK/Kr easily, then most groceries you can "buy" money with or without buying other stuff. Fees depends on the credit card and bank you use, else rarely no extra cost.

      Might be a reason why the man doesn't automatically pay for the meal on a date. Women are equal. Many years ago, during my youth in the US, I went on a first date at a nice restaurant. After paying the bill, my date suggested we go back to his place... When I gently refused he got angry and said "well I paid for the food!" He also refused to drive me home!! After that I always wore low-heeled shoes on a first date.

    It’s not like Norwegians don’t litter. And it’s also a generational thing. Back in the day we where taught this. The younger generations don’t seem to care much. And for some weird reason after Covid and the pandemic it’s like people just forgot about manners, and in general our social norms. Especially on how to behave in public like always give way and walk on the right side, if you’re walking along and see someone coming towards you you move to the right, it’s even more evident when it comes to traffic and how to drive. Suddenly people become reckless and don’t give a fuck! And people doesn’t seem to understand that if a garbage can is full no poi t stuffing it even more or leave it right next to it for birds and rata to gather🙄🫣🫠 I’ll even go as far as to claim that people are getting dumber…
