    Dialects snd sub dialects---dialect
    vocabulary words are in certain
    grammar categories, so people
can always expect to.find local.words in those places, and be
    aware that they shall encounter
words that are not simply pronunciations of national Putonghua words, like demonstrative adjectives some pronouns, some verbs that have daily use and usually 1 syllable,
    the particle between adjectives
or nouns, or noun and other nouns, some measure.words before
nouns, and a few other categories.
Also, many "dialect" words are modern dialect uses of old national words, like Cantonese
sik (to eat, also food) is Putonghua shi (in past, to eat, also food, now only food), Hokkien, yi,
(he, she, it) is continuation of old
national--Northern yi (before modern ta). Question words
tend to be unique or borrowed
    from minorities, etc (Cantonese
matye, meiye, for what? or whatever). In sum, dialect origin and dialect use old Northern national words categories are ALWAYS limited to certain, predictable, even knowable, groups of words which 1 can always expect and be on look out--- VERY
    regular and systematic!!! The vast
    majority of words are common
    Northern national words with
    pronunciation and tone variations
    that are problematic but possible
to learn. Also, most of word order
    and other grammar are mostly
    identical!! In other words, dialects
are NOT minority or foreign languages--- they are all.variations
    of a common Northern national
    theme.
    Hope this helps.
Zhu dajia hao yunqi!! Jia, you!!!
