Elon Musk just revealed SpaceX Wild Plans to Catch Starship Booster!
The past three Starship flights have marked significant advancements for the program. However, one crucial aspect that SpaceX has yet to accomplish successfully is the landing phase of the mission. Nevertheless, it is highly anticipated that this year, perhaps even in the coming months, SpaceX will embark on the inaugural attempts of a long-awaited method: catching the Booster using the Mechazilla Arm. This endeavor is poised to be a monumental challenge, considering it represents uncharted territory in aerospace engineering.
Elon Musk just revealed SpaceX Wild Plans to Catch Starship Booster!
So, how will the landing process with the Mechazilla Arm unfold, and what factors demand careful consideration in this pivotal task? Join us on today's episode of Great SpaceX as we delve into the intricacies of this groundbreaking endeavor and explore the key elements crucial to its success.
Elon Musk just revealed SpaceX Wild Plans to Catch Starship Booster!
In the last presentation at Starbase, Elon Musk unveiled several groundbreaking developments and ambitious plans for the future: "If the landing in the virtual tower with the booster works, then we will actually try with Flight 5 to come back and land on the tower."

How about landing the booster at a different landing pad? One that has a tower, chopsticks, and landing pad, but which is further away with no critical launch equipment nearby? You still catch the booster, and can transport it where ever needed but do not risk launch equipment or personnel. Similar to the way Falcon 9 boosters are captured by the drone ships. No need to land it on the actual pad it launches from. At least to start with until the capture is perfected.

@@Mrfrogboi Actually, they are building a new tower as we speak. They completed a new one in Florida. And if it only catches the booster, it will be much simpler than a full-up tower, and much easier and quicker to build. Will it be ready next week? No. But by the end of the year it could be, or even sooner. And it wouldn't necessarily be a permanent solution - just until the perfect the catch technology and prove that it is safe, effective, and repeatable.

A separate catch tower is has very different requirements than the launch tower so it makes perfect sense to have a dedicated catch tower. For example, the catch tower need only be a third the height of the launch tower, endures only the center raptor exhaust for a short time not 33 raptors for a longer time, no propellent loading/unloading, no careful alignment issues of the stacking process, no quick disconnect of piping and electrical. Only bigoted naysayers would deride the possibility of a catch tower without considering the benefits. But then again, that’s why Elon is successful and his detractors make everything they control fail.

I can see catching the Booster and the Starship tanker with the OLM from a workflow standpoint as long as there is zero ... zero ... maintenance. However, the Starship will need to have new cargo loaded which takes non-zero time. So, seems the OLM will catch the returning Starship and then immediately transfer it to a mobile transport every time for reloading cargo away from the tower. SpaceX engineering approach is to eliminate steps so ... Seems better to have a "catch-only" OLM or just engineer a mobile transport (also provides the "legs" to attach to the hard points on the Starship) to catch the Starship. I wonder if it is a center of mass decision ... the chop sticks would be closer to the center of mass of the returning Starship (or booster) ... which would reduce tip over risk.

I wonder if they are planning to feed the data from the booster to the tower and have it react in real time, as if it is catching a "virtual" booster. To see if the chopsticks move to the right position and with sufficient speed. Booster is returning to the virtual tower in the ocean, and the tower is catching the virtual image of that booster

SpaceX could safely eliminate lots of risk by raising the booster onto the chopsticks and then fire 3 engines to fly 10 meters up, then land on the chopsticks. This would reveal potential problems including control, touchdown speeds. Amount of propellent required for landing, consequence of landing with excess propellent weight on safe touchdown velocity, potential damage to booster and chopsticks upon inaccurate alignment or touchdown speed, stability issues of the booster swinging like a pendulum after touchdown, and other unforeseen problems.

I still feel further developing and combining the improved Raptor engines with Falcon Heavy would have sufficed, using all this money building modular stations, lunar ferries and planetary cruisers from there on without the use of methane as fuel beyond orbit.
The logistics of moving Falcon rockets around barely outweighs the cost and time developing launch towers and larger rockets refuelling.

The gimmick is reusability. Every Starship that needs to leave orbit will need up to 20 additional Starships to refuel it. For that to happen, they need them to launch them all in quick succession. He thinks this will allow the best chance for quick turn around with the smallest amount of damage.
I'm with you though, it can only end in disaster. That whole site will get nuked.
They still can't turn around a Falcon anywhere near the time they are talking about doing it for Starship. So it's all kind of fruitless. They can't take 2 years to refill every Starship that they want to use either.

No confidence in catching the booster. I would do legs first at least. They couldn't even get catching the fairings with a net thing right and turns out letting them land in the ocean with a parachute was the right thing to do.

  • @clavo3352

FUNNY LANDING IDEA --->>> One way they could assure a soft landing is to land the booster, or spaceship, AT HIGH ALTITUDE, inside a grid segment of cables that will entangle on the grid fins. The cables have parachutes attached that deploy via altitude sensors. The grid of super strong nylon strap type cables is held in a horizontal plane at a high altitude target area via a plurality of Helium balloons that are position assisted by multi-prop drones. They could be maintained at high altitude space, several grids at a time almost like satellites. The chutes can be remotely detached from the cables. Instead of chutes use autogiro blades.
It would be like a dart board game where instead of throwing the darts at a target; you throw the target at the falling dart! Actually it would be a dual coordination.

As an engineer I cannot see this whole exercise as anything much more than a publicity stunt. The hazard of catching a booster or space craft in mid-air has the effect of giving zero value to any efficiency gain. If you land, land safely nearby - why risk expensive infrastructure of the minor gain of not remounting the booster to the pad? Being able to make 10 launches a day? In a mushroom-driven Musk dream is all I can say! Musk is great at pushing the edges on some technical things because the physics allows evolution in that direction, but also giving him room to bullshit further on more spectacular claims.

SpaceX has disrupted business as usual in the space industry, if they don't start doing what SpaceX is doing, file for bankruptcy! The IDIOTS at NASA spend 20X more of TAXPAYERS money per launch than Musk does! Musk's proven reuse of boosters, never thought possible is normal now and extremely efficient! The first commenter is worried about Musk/SpaceX destroying a launch pad, do you think Musk gives a rats ass about the expense of that? If it costs him $100million to repair, he will make that $$ back in interest before the repair hits the planning board! Love how so called engineers that DO NOT work for him are jealous of his progress and his get it done no matter the cost attitude!
