As someone who works with people with dementia, this is not tricking them but potentially helping them hugely. If you see someone with moderate-severe dementia, they can often be extremely distressed - calling out and crying. The presence of simple (non-robotic) stuffed toys or even live animals can be extremely calming and reassuring for them. PARO therefore sits somewhere between the two, and doesn't have some of the problems that a real live animal would have whilst being more responsive and engaging than a standard stuffed toy.
Ultimately, the question is whether the patient's quality of life is improved or enhanced by such a device. If you've ever seen how some elderly with advanced dementia hold onto stuffed toys like they once might have as children, you will see the potential benefits of this. You don't have to trick them, don't tell them it's real or fake, just give it to them and they will do what comes naturally, which is to hold and pet it.
Of course, this is only a tool and should not be used as a total substitute for human interaction. But recognising that in care homes it's not possible for 1:1 interaction 24/7, this can potentially be a very useful adjunct.

Do you still use PARO? Do you own PARO? How have things been?

I have retired and no longer work in Long-Term Care. Up until then, I used PARO for interactions with many stages of those with dementia with great success.

@@jasonbarcomb1064 Thank you for responding to my post! Did you use PARO during the COVID pandemic? Would it be okay to ask you more questions about your PARO use?

Nice, but all those hands touching it - how does it get cleaned?

Probabaly like you'd clean a stuffed animal, but more delicatley as it has robotics inside it.
