Hat Yai is a town in the South of Thailand, a place where many a street food-lover falls head over heels for the beautiful mix of Chinese, Malay, and of course local Southern Thai. In this situation (and it was the same with us!) one might find themselves looking for HOW to extend the time visiting here… “Just one more day, ok just oooone more day…”
The List of street food spots calling out for explorarion here is never-ending, but THIS bowl of “Bull-Whip Braised Beef” still stands out in my memory from this entire 3-week trip.
The amazing use of EVERY ingredient, cooking with every part of an animal, is something that Ive learned to love about the food culture of SouthEast Asia (of course, Chinese food has a wonderfully large influence here as well!). This dish tonight presents such a wonderful example of this for me, and I hope you love the time hanging out together with Li and myself tonight.

I have to give you a big compliment, honestly I am very happy to have our core group of supporters watching/commenting on almost every video (but I don’t expect you to actually watch every minute of every video!!) - you’re awesome for listening to the past 2 videos all the way to the end.
So! Just for you, I will just say this - after 3 days, it was obvious that we just couldn’t end the HatYai part of our trip… so we went for a day trip somewhere else, and then came back for several more days! Hahah AND a good thing too because (video coming next week) in those extra days we had what is now my current favorite meal in all of Thailand ♥️

Vietnamese like to make pennyworth drink. Sometimes we cook it as soup. We think it will cool down your internal temperature.

That is an amazing bit of recommendation, I love this herb and I drink the juice and I eat the leaves all the time but I never knew about it in a soup :-) that is so cool

Hi Joel and lovely Li ❤️🙏. Awesome video! Love the broad noodles. Always my favourite and love a good soupy dish with lots of broth. I think I'll take a hard pass on the bull privates though 😂. A bit rough even for me lol. I think I'm going off meat in general again. Go through phases where I only want vegan foods or sometimes fish. I made a beautiful Noodle dish the other night with lots of pak Choy and bean sprouts that I couldn't taste. Taste and smell completely gone with the Covid 😂. Loving the fresh coconuts. The soft flesh is always delicious and jelly like. Hard to find in South Africa! Been living off dry toast and Bovril tea. My friend that moved to Thailand has now relocated to Siem Reap. Old Thai Country and she's loving it there. What a beautiful place. Much love to everyone and blessings 🙏. Hope there will be a livestream Sunday. Sabaidee Joel! I know exactly what that special ingredient was. Lol. The first time I had it was at a Pho restaurant in San Jose. If I'm mistaken, the male Chinese Olympic team would bowls of "bull whip" soup for it's stamina properties. Tastes like tendon but slightly different in texture. Hi. Have you tried the bor beer sot in Hat Yai. Yummy. It's a chinese wrap with tasty sweet (slightly peppery) sauce. There's a great shop serving it in the afternoon on Sangchan Road, near the intersection beside the big Chinese temple. They serve it with wasabi there.

I appreciate the question, yes you are correct the food at restaurants is usually cheaper than making the same food at home, however is rarely as high-quality, and so yes we do cook at home. Don’t forget, we make one or two videos per week, so the other 19 or 20 meals that week we eat at home
