Here’s a random idea for a short video. Desi Bouterse, former military dictator of Suriname, twice elected president, and convicted of drug trafficking across the world. He couldn’t leave Suriname while he was president because he would be arrested during his presidency for any sort of diplomatic talks except one trip to the UN. His son, who he appointed to Suriname’s version of the anti-terrorism agency, was arrested in the US for attempting to establish ties with Hezbollah. He also oversaw a relatively small mass execution of Surinames and non Surinames people, his bodyguard rose up in revolt and started the Surinames civil war, and he would go on to become the current Vice President of the country. Also convicted of drug trafficking internationally. Interesting fella, not thattt long or complicated of a story so perhaps not to your taste but just wanted to suggest it lol

Also convicted of drug trafficking internationally. Interesting fella, not thattt long or complicated of a story so perhaps not to your taste but just wanted to suggest it lol Edit: Okay so my brain is properly calibrated and I now have some more... interesting... events I'd like to mention. In the 1980s during Bouterse's first dictatorship, there were several coup attempts against him. One of them was done by a very small group of people. Three people led the coup. They hijacked a tank, yes a singular tank, and tried to depose Bouterse with again, a singular tank. The funny part is that the only reason that this coup attempt failed was because one of the three people defected and quite literally, I am not making this up, drove the tank straight to a pro-Bouterse military base and handed it over. Quite the silly event if you ask me. I'm also pretty sure that the aforementioned "relatively small mass execution" that I mentioned earlier came as a direct consequence of this, in which people with Surinames, Dutch, and various Caribbean nationalities were executed, some personally by the guy himself. This caused international and domestic outrage and would be one of the primary factors in his deposing. Moving on, in the 1990s the guy would, I am not exaggerating in the slightest bit, call the president and dismiss the government. During the transition to democracy the deal that was made was that the civilians would get back control of civilian affairs while he would remain commander in chief of the military. This was, as the coup displayed, quite the brilliant idea. He would remain dictator for about half a year I think before he had to resign after strikes (he did appoint a figurehead to rule for him, but he was quite clearly a puppet to Bouterse). Finally, in the 2010s and 2020s, as he made his presidential debut (leading the country straight into its greatest financial crisis in decades and bringing it up to third place in highest inflation rates across the world between 2015-2016), the judiciary was like "guys... he literally executed fifteen people without cause and did all those other things..." and promptly started a trial against him. The Surinames version of the Supreme Court would handle this case. Now its quite important to mention here that Desi Bouterse was the party leader of the NDP, and so when the trial started the NDP dominated legislature immr bediately passed an amnesty law absolving him of his crimes. The pardon laws in Suriname are quite uncertain, so he wanted insurance that he would never spend a single second in jail. In response, the judiciary basically said "no." and continued their trial against him. After he failed to gain the presidency in the 2020 election, Desi Bouterse tried to fight the trial head on but the evidence was overwhelming and I think the amnesty law was overturned by the new parliament. Very recently, just a year or so ago, he became a fugitive and is technically being hunted by the government but there is a strong chance he is just still residing in one of his many luxurious properties in the capital. Quite the ramble I know. But now let me tell you something actually very funny. Ronnie Brunswijk, the current vice president of Suriname, proclaimed himself king of the descendants of maroons and Africans in Suriname, or something like that. The specifics don't matter, but if you search online you can clearly see he was trying to make some sort of grandiose coronation as the "king of Suriname". The coronation itself was so lame, its honestly depressing and hilarious at the same time. This was not done when he was a bank robber or when he led the insurgency against his former employer, this was a few years ago. It basically became the laughing stock of the country until it collectively remembered that this is the man who will be president if the current president suddenly dies. Anyway, that was a very long ramble. I think there are a lot of other very interesting people in Surinames history, but they're very poorly sourced if at all and most of the information comes from people in the country so it can be quite unreliable and inconsistent if you try to gather information as an outsider. If Spartan761 ever wants to make a video on this guy, I will gladly help with translating sources and explaining the, not complicated but just stupid politics of a Latin American country's politics if he wants me to. I don't see Suriname being brought up online often, which makes sense because its the smallest independent country in South America, an already not so online famous continent, but if you were to make a video on its rather absurd history I would love to contribute if you want me to.
