  • Building and painting the brand new ‪@OfficialAirfix‬ K2/Y Ambulance in 1/35 scale. This kit was released by earlier earlier this month and is an absolutely fantastic kit. In this video I complete the build section and start the painting using the Caunter camouflage scheme. You can find the ambulance kit at the Airfix website: prf.hn/l/xnyqe9z
    The Austin K2/Y Ambulance was used by the British and Commonwealth forces in numerous theatres of World War 2 including the Western Deserts, Western Europe, and to support civilian ambulances on the Home Front.

    Glad to see you didn’t have the same issues as I had when fitting on the roof , wasn’t just me but someone else had same issues when trying to fit the roof to the cab with huge gaps

    There has been some negativity with this kit....but just on one point , I recently made a first kit in decades of a Geecko Quad tractor with a full engine which is in the end unseen in side unless you turn it upside down ..so for me this kit is the one for me.....& I'm making it as a 43Rd Wessex Div , to go with my 179th FR RA collection....My Dads regiment.

      I haven't read much about it but I agree - no point building (and spending money on) details you aren't going to see. I really liked this kit and thought the build was great. Didn't see much about the Gecko either but bending those PE stretcher rails put me off.

    oh well I am going to have to get this kit now. I love that camo scheme and the stripes. It's a great variation from plain colours. I think another build would be the ambulance from the film "Ice cold in Alex" with Sylvia Syms and John Mills. It's a pity it doesn't have an engine as a diorama with an open bonnet could be good. Still, it's not a difficult scratch build to make an engine.

    • @ModelNerd
      @ModelNerd  2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Stunning paint job, would you recommend VMS varnish?, I am thinking of switching but not sure which brand to use, have used both Tamiya and AK but not 100% happy with eithet

    • @ModelNerd
      @ModelNerd  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Anthony. I'd thoroughly recommend VMS varnish. I used to use Tamiya rattle cans but I wouldn't go back now. The VMS stuff seems to go a lot further (less waste compared to the rattle can) and the flat is soooo flat, it's great stuff.

    Great build and looks really good. I done couple of smaller AirFix kits which I enjoy but my painting is not good with a brush and it spoils the outcome.

    • @ModelNerd
      @ModelNerd  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks mate. For the brush painting, which paints are you using? I started out brush painting and had a lot of problems at first. I found priming the model before painting made a big difference. I also found Vallejo paints to be the best (thinned with a little water). Tamiya acrylics really don't brush very well at all.

    • @gbjanuary
      @gbjanuary 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ModelNerd using the Humbrol acrylics paint that does not brush well and probably needs thinning.

    • @ModelNerd
      @ModelNerd  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I'd say it probably needs thinning. The Humbrol Gen 2 paints are supposed to be better - I have some which I need to do a test video for soon.

    • @gbjanuary
      @gbjanuary 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ModelNerd do you know how to thin is it water or paint thinner?

    • @ModelNerd
      @ModelNerd  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think Humbrol have their own thinner but you can also use water. I'd experiment with different amounts of water and see what works best for you, maybe evening starting with just a damp brush rather than adding water to the paint in the palette. Thin enough that you don't get brush strokes. Thin coats, probably multiple coats, will be best. Also bear in mind that some colours are harder to paint than others (e.g. white, yellow, red are always a struggle to get coverage).

      Thank you mate, I'm glad you enjoyed it. As for the Lancaster, I'm not sure how much help I can be. If you've seen my recent video you'll have seen that I couldn't decide either and ended up doing both. However, I do personally have a fondness for the standard Bomber Command scheme. As a side note, I'll be doing a Grand Slam version myself sometime, which may well have its own scheme that is slightly different.

    Hi MN, very nice build. As for the decal problem: have you tried putting on a big blob of Mark Fit before applying the decal? It prevents the decal to stick to the model immediately and helps sliding it in place.

    • @ModelNerd
      @ModelNerd  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks mate. Yes, I tried some Mark Fit but it seems to affect the paintwork when using AK Real Colours and VMS varnish. I've just moved to these from Tamiya products, which of course weren't really affected by their own decal solution.

      @@ModelNerd Actually, I had a vision as soon as I saw it. I see a stretcher being loaded into the Ambulance with one figure bent over, holding the stretcher inside and the following figure outside (creating motion of action of loading). Along the front of the vehicle are seen some 'covered' dead infantry men lying on the ground. It's the wounded man on the stretcher that sets the story. He is shown as having a leg or arm amputated and in poor condition. The title of the vignette is 'The Survivor'. This may sound a little to morbid for you but, I was thinking that your printer can create the poses. Anyway, this is my vision. Thank you for showing interest in my idea. Get back to me and please let me know if this would be a plausible scene. I look forward to your ideas as well. Take care my friend. I'll see you soon.

    • @ModelNerd
      @ModelNerd  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that's a really interesting idea, Michael. I know that one of my favourite 3D model builders produces models of injured soldiers (e.g. www.cgtrader.com/3d-model-collections/american-soldiers-ww2-a11-pack-1) although he doesn't seem to do many British or Allied figures. I think you are right though - the back of the ambulance needs to be busy in some way, even if it is just injured soldiers sitting down. (Now I mention that, I'm not convinced a seat figure will fit on the top deck of the ambulance - I'll need to check). I do have several sets of Dragon figures, Germans, walking wounded and a stretcher case. I wonder if there are any archive photos of POWs in ambulances....
      Thanks for all the ideas Michael!
