    honest talks like these keep me going

  • @SilentJaguar68
    @SilentJaguar68 3 ปีที่แล้ว +58

    I remember a time when I was talking in Romanian to someone in Romania, and she bluntly told me, "Your Romanian sounds like Google Translate"
    I was two years into the process and this made me extremely mad, I almost blew up on her. Instead, I decided to just tell her that it wasn't a good thing to say to a learner of her language and walked away.
    For the next 6 months I was pretty much fueled by an intense rage stemming from that moment and made a lot of progress in Romanian. And then eventually, I got to a point where I let go of that rage fuel so I could continue learning in a more positive manner 😂
    That was one of my only bad experiences with language learning, but it was one of my strongest motivators for a while as well. So two sides to every coin I guess lol

    • @abesapien9930
      @abesapien9930 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      So it sounded like her criticism, hard as it was to hear at first, improved your Romanian. Will you seek out blunt criticism in the future so your other languages can improve just as much? ;P

    • @SilentJaguar68
      @SilentJaguar68 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@abesapien9930 I don't mind blunt criticism very much when it's given to me about my language. Because I know what questions to ask after that now.
      But it also helps that I had this experience, because besides getting my level higher in Romanian, I was given an example of what not to do when giving someone feedback. So now I try to give helpful and constructive feedback to learners of my native language (English).
      So overall, it was a helpful experience, though it didn't feel like it at the time 🤣

    As a Polish person I just picked up Hungarian not so long ago and tbh I'm already overhelmed by the amounts of features this language has. I kinda don't know where to start tbh. Funny thing is that even tho my own language has a case system,I have no conscious experience of learning a language with this feature (as the only other languages I know are English and French),so it's a bit weird not to have all those "smaller words" to work with,but having to worry about countless suffixes instead. But the language itself is just so wonderful and fascinating at the same time,that I REALLY want to keep on learning it. Also could someone recommend me a good book to start with Hungarian from a scratch. I was personally thinking about getting MagyarOK.

    For me as a Hungarian, wovel harmony in Hungarian seems something like the present-past-third form triads of English verbs. As a new learner it is just cramming them into your head, but if you repeat them enough, you discover similiarities and patterns that will help later to guess the different forms of a word met outside of classroom.

    Similarities between Hungarian and Spanish: ny=ñ (Catalans write ny) and ly=ll.
    Hungarian and German both have separable prefixes. My mom told me about a Hungarian kid who recited, over and over, "ül le, leülni" (sitzt herunter, heruntersitzen).
    If you speak Hungarian, you know some Russian words (or close relatives): медведь, четверг, пятница, колбаса, баран.
    El uno es perro, el otro es can. El uno es diecinueve, el otro es undeveinte.
    In German there's a pair of words "Wachstube" in which "s" is pronounced differently because they're split differently as compounds. Is there such a pair in Hungarian?
    See ya! (Or is it szia?)

    I relish learning languages! Just the sheer novelty of a foreign language switches something on in my brain. But although I'd been focusing a lot on the high-population languages like Spanish and Italian, I've come back to study the languages of my own country, the Philippines! The archipelago is so linguistically diverse; I'm learning Binukid, Tausug, Higaonon, and Ilonggo. It's much harder to talk about learning the ''big'' languages because people will think you're showing off. I want none of the disproportionate standards for speaking that's on YT. With our native languages, it's just talking and chillin'. Love Lindie Botes!

      Sorry for answering instead of Lindie, but I think it really depends on what you want. I learned German too and now I am learning Chinese cuz it will create good job opportunities for me. If you are looking for a language similar to German, you could learn Dutch or Afrikaans. If you are looking for a language to help you with more job opportunities, then maybe French, Spanish or Chinese. It all depends on what you want. There are a lot of dope languages out there.

    Recently I was speaking with someone in spanish and they asked me if I was using a translator to speak with them (I wasn't lol) and I playfully asked why do you think that do I sound like translation apps and they said yes, haha it was such a shaking experience but I started to work on my sentences structure hopefully I would sound like humans some time soon

      I am sure, because Englsih and German have super easy grammar compared to many other European languages (yeah English is easier but still German isn't bad, Danish grammar is not complicated either because there are other aspects that make Danish hard). If you're an English native speaker you may find the grammar hard, but don't worry! It's relatively easy🤣❤️❤️

    Hi Lindie! Hola! Soy de México y me encanta aprender idiomas. Te sigo desde hace unos años pero nunca me he animado a compartir mi experiencia. Gracias por compartir con la comunidad lo que haces, me inspiras a seguir con esta pasión que tengo por los idiomas. Hace unos dias empece a subir videos para prácticar. Intentando hablar en varios idiomas, en formato de podcast. Y me siento muy nerviosa.th-cam.com/video/zEwpxxBpoqo/w-d-xo.html
