    Every time i see a Donna Tartt interview, it makes me appreciate her books even more. The fact that she worked on this book for 13 years is amazing. Really difficult to put down that kind of dedication and hard work.

    I personally loved it! Didn't feel overwhelmed by the length of it and really enjoyed the writing, just seeing theo grow up and encountering such diverse characters and meeting again with his childhood as an adult in new york. The last chapter is magnificent

    The actors, the characters in the movie were Great, they were endearing. Specially young Boris, adult Theo with this smile reflecting so so much from deep into His soul, Pippa was marvellous as a child and young woman, and Hobbie was pure heart. HOWEVER, the development of the movie was disappointing. They did not reflect what this story Is really about: solitude, true friendship, loyalty and survival. Also, such a masterpiece in writing can not be substituted by images. The writing Is so much More complex.

    I loved The GOLDFINCH so so much that I wish It has been at least five chapters longer: three on youn Boris, such an interesting, smart, free, noble character. Another on Pippa as an adult, she was wise, caring, natural. And the last one on Hobbie, such a rock to the main characters. I loved them so much. Also, Donna Tartt feels such compassion to the little bird, I had not noticed the chain and It was heartbreaking.

    I agree with everything you said. I am really enjoying the book (am in page 523). Someone here mentioned Theo isnt a likeable character, but the way I see it, he is a survivor, he is real not an ideal character. I agree that he resembles the dad wishing he would be more like the mom. He worships his mother but we dont know a lot about her, actually neither does he since she passed when he was a child and he writes the book later on.
    It was really nice listening to your review!

    I LOVED the film and it quickly became one of my favorite films. I had not read the book but seeing the film made me want to read it. I left the cinema experiencing a feeling I had never felt at the end of The Goldfinch film. Idk how to describe it but I definitely wanted to know more about the story. I listened to the audio book and fell IN LOVE with this story. I’ll admit there were parts that I didn’t care for but over all I throughly enjoyed it and spend a lot of time reading about it and watching videos on it. It is interesting to see what everyone gets out of it. From the way Theo views his grief, to his sometimes philosophical thoughts, to homosexual subtext, to Theos family life and him not realizing how like his father he is. I could go on but then I’d be here for a while. While I would have love to have seen more in the film I’m not sure what else they could have added for the general public to not get bored. I think it was well done for the most part. The score is hauntingly beautiful, the cinematography is phenomenal and all of the actors do a superb job as their character.

    Your review perfectly encapsulates the beauty of this book.
    I had been holding out after TSH (a favourite) and TLF (very good) but I caved and finished 'The Goldfinch'. I have no words. Heartbreakingly beautiful. Marvellous writing. I am now among the numerous Donna Tartt fans waiting for her next creation.
    Also how beautiful is the cover? The painting (the 'muse' if one thinks so) on the inner front cover and the image of the 'creator' of this masterful work on the inner back cover. One of the books I hope to reread many times.

    Loved both and I reread and rewatch a few times a year. Both are well done. Look forward to Donna Tartt's next novel which I hear is due in 2024.

    Hi Juan, thank you for making this video and really enjoyed your other videos. I have seen so many bad reviews about this book that I am so so happy to find yours. Same to your review on ‘A little life’, it is really nice to find people of similar taste on story telling style. I was so confused why people hate this book when reading it. I don’t think the dragged scenes were there for nothing. I have read quite a few books with really weird plot such as ‘A week in December’ (I have not even read that many books like many people on TH-cam have) which dragged pages about one speech on religion. On the contrary, I find ‘The goldfinch’ very real, very close to life and created a great world where everything can be so vividly pictures in my head by just reading her words. It made me think how much our experience affect our lives. Anyway, I do respect people who dislike the book tho. Similar to my comment to ‘A little life’, our own experience can really affect our taste in book. If we have hard time relate, we have hard time liking a story I guess.

      Oh sorry, didn’t mean to offend anyone by saying dragged pages on a speech about religion. It was just an example. There are so many other things that ‘A week in December’ went into extreme length to write about such as footballer’s practice and stock market prediction.

    May I please request your recommendations for contemporary authors/books with a writing style as evocative as Donna Tartt? After finishing all her books, I feel bereft. I've searched for recommendations online but I don't think they match what I'm looking for.

    I found the book unbearably tedious I don't know who the editor was but they definitely failed to do a good job in editing out unnecessary details, descriptions etc.

    Thanks for the review! I'm going to start reading Donna Tartt - which order would you recommend for reading her three books?

    • @justjuanreader
      @justjuanreader  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Bookhouse Boy I would suggest The Goldfinch as the first one, it’s the most accesible probably. Then I would read The Little Friend but keeping in mind it’s a completely different kind of novel (I have a complete review talking about it; it’s wonderful but not what people would expect). And finishing with The Secret History, which is just perfection.

    I'm not a native but very fluent in english. Do you advise me to read this in english? Is it hard to read I mean the vocabulary in general? I watched some reviews of the book in my language but fell like reading in english.

    • @justjuanreader
      @justjuanreader  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      TRSummer If you are feeling it, I say go for it. The language can be a tad elaborate in some descriptions and meditative passages, but overall I’d say it’s a very accessible book and the storytelling is very compelling. Reading Donna Tartt always helps me with my English, since it is my second language as well.

      Yes, read it in English. It is well written and worth your time. It might be a good idea to get an audible book, where you can listen to the book as well as read along. It is a superior book,

    I wanted to love The Goldfinch, but Theo is so unlikable as a character , I actively hate-read the entire thing in three days just to get it over with. That's not saying you won't like the book, I just found Theo to be deplorable.
