Sam, the wiggling indicates a misaligned shaft. You’ll want to leave the shaft attached to coupling, pull coupling from trans and adjust the motor mounts to align the two faces perfectly. If not you risk dropping the shaft (happened to me on my CD33) or damage to transmission.
thanks for the feedback. Here’s some more info to get up to date. the alignment was off so I realigned the motor in greece while underway and it ran great for a few hours but then the vibrations came back and the alignment was off again. When I spin the shaft disconnected from the motor the shaft spins true from what I can observe so I think the motor mounts (pretty much disintegrated) are the first thing to change. They dont seem to be able to maintain alignment if thats a thing. I’ll try to swap the motor mounts in Venice. I appreciate any suggestions though because I don’t really know what I’m doing. In the meantime I’ll continue using the engine only sparingly until I know it’s running true.

Sam Holmes Saliling changed my life. I had lost sight of purpose and was wasting time. I’m now laser focused on executing a 2 year plan to leave my corporate job, and set sail in Sam’s footsteps.

Yes that has been really bothering me. They did find some bend in the shaft but it was at the end and the said they machined it out when they redid the taper. It appears the shaft is straight now. I realigned the motor in the water myself later in greece and it was running way smoother but then it started vibrating again after a few hours. @@samholmessailingwould bad mounts cause a new vibration that wasn't there before? How do you check to make sure the alignment is correct? Is the stuffing box tight?
Sam, FWIW, i agree with Shanep. That vibration looks bad. When you had the motor off and you filmed the motion it looked like either a bent shaft or a misaligned engine or both.

Hey Sam ... it looks like you have adequate clearance over your dodger ... have you considered moving the boom down 3" - 4"? I just recently watched someone adjust the height on theirs, and it was fairly straight forward (drilled out rivets, held the boom at the new desired height, marked out holes, pre-drilled the holes, and then mounted the boom with new rivets in the new holes). Just a thought ... then you could really see what that new sail could do!!!
That is a valid question, but as we are talking about 3 - 4 inches, I'm sure that the forces on the sail would be minimal -- of course lowering the boom would also be lowering the center of gravity marginally (not sure how heavy a boom Sam has on Pickle). Either way I doubt it would have a negative effect on performance the way that raising the boom would for all of the aforementioned reasons.@@221b-l3t
Sam, as to reefing lines. Consider, if possible, running all lines back to the cockpit. That’s the arrangement that I have on my Ericson 32-3 and it makes for a very safe and quick way to reef underway.
The vibration might be from a misaligned motor (after putting the shaft back in), which could be fixed by relaigning the motor (or a problem with the engine mounts that might have been exacerbated by the recent damage etc.) or it might be that the shaft was bent more than could be corrected by the machining done in Malta (in which case that wont fix it) good luck!
Don’t know for certain but a mis aligned or out of balance shaft /propeller could cause the vibrations. Be careful it could shake itself to damage. One more thing…
After your boat was launched, rather than get underway immediately, you should have tied up to a dock, tuned your rig and performed a no less than perfect engine/shaft alignment. If you dont tend to this immediately, you will be spending more Euros.
Shame you don’t have a flattener and Cunningham cringles in the sail you could have rigged it like a small reef. Onwards and upwards Sam. Looking forward to Greece.
Always makes me wonder in the 80’s when I first went to Malta the roads were all potholed they’d just cut down the traffic lights as every one ignored them. The castles were crumbling and growing grass now all looks brand new EU membership has its perks. Fair winds
Alternative to total recxut of the foot is to add a ring above your tack, would be like a ‘Cunningham). That way you can get correct tension on the luff (which will improve your windward ability), and the issue goes away as soon as you are reffed anyway. Could be a ring handsewn in, or a ring strapped on with webbing. Nice looking jib for sure.
Nuhhh! The cunningham idea would work, but it's a new sail so get the foot recut and you'll never look back with regret of having a misfitting sail. Otherwise great looking sails and new prop... though sort the engine mounts and shaft alignment ASAP.
I’m sure you’ve mentioned it but about how much would the new sails have cost? Thanks in advance. Love the videos. I can’t wait for the opportunity to follow your path.😎
How is the motor doing after 1000 miles Sam? The wiggle in it seemed to cause you a little concern after departing the boat dock and in turn did so for me lol. Hopefully everything is fine. Previous owner put just one reef point in the mainsail. He said, "Either you're reefed or you're not."
Rolly Tasker also gave Wind Hippie a sail 👍
Shame you don’t have a flattener and Cunningham cringles in the sail you could have rigged it like a small reef. Onwards and upwards Sam. Looking forward to Greece.
Oh my goodness Grand Central Station in that harbour…..
Always makes me wonder in the 80’s when I first went to Malta the roads were all potholed they’d just cut down the traffic lights as every one ignored them. The castles were crumbling and growing grass now all looks brand new EU membership has its perks. Fair winds
Nothing like being a tax haven to bring in some money.
Sam are you planning on any of Asia, i goto Thailand alot and the water and islands are epic
Sam, are you planning on joining the ARC in Nov. to transAT west to the Caribbean?
Hey Sam, what's the beam on your little ship?
Fair winds
I’m sure you’ve mentioned it but about how much would the new sails have cost? Thanks in advance.
Love the videos. I can’t wait for the opportunity to follow your path.😎
Im not actually sure because I got them for free. Send an email to rolly tasker and im sure they can get you a quote.
How is the motor doing after 1000 miles Sam? The wiggle in it seemed to cause you a little concern after departing the boat dock and in turn did so for me lol. Hopefully everything is fine. Amazing journey through the Mediterranean so far! Really enjoy your channel and following along! The new sails look amazing too!
The engine needs new motor mounts now. It cant hold its alignment now. Looking into ordering some up.
Do you think it could be a worthwhile exercise to get the tailshaft checked for straightness before you replace the engine mounts?
@@samholmessailing before reading this I was gonna comment it. seemed like it was moving quite a bit.
Hey before u install those new mounts check the straightness on that shaft before u install new mounts or it will destroy ur brand new mounts along with other things.
@@chris47374 we had it checked at a machine shop it seems straight.
