I Found Pyrite Crystals (Fools Gold) in Michigan! Gem and Mineral Hunting the Great Lakes State

- This has been a bucket list mineral for me for a very long time! I remember going into rock shops as a kid and being completely amazed at pyrite cubes. The cuboidal crystal structure just looks incredible to me. I had the pleasure to hunt this site in Michigan for clusters of these pyrite cubes. They are found in this limestone rock used as fill material under a bridge. I was thrilled to finally find some of this beautiful mineral to add to my collection!

The Calcite Quarry at Rogers City MI is amazing! I was able to go in one of the huge dump trucks when I was younger.

You find Pyrite and Mica everywhere you turn in Colorado
Calcite often being the last crystals to form in cavities obscure crystals you want. Hydrochloric acid to clean up that. Only rust? oxalic acid works on that.

One of my favorite finds was a pyrite cluster found on a driveway rock...we have tons of limestone gravel here in Indiana

What great finds. I bought huge pyrite pieces at a rock show. Went hunting for amethyst in Rabun County, North Georgia. Pieces are all over the ground there near the water.

Try using Hydrochloric Acid (Muriatic Acid) to free the pyrite from the limestone. The reaction is really vigorous, so do it outside and away from anything you don't want acid splashing on. Try it on a rough piece first to see how it reacts. I use a jar for small pieces, but you'll probably need a large glass bowl for some of those bigger pieces. Awesome finds man!
I know a river in Puerto Rico that is full of them pyrite, my friend as young man we mess with them as it was gold so we kept some of them, then my matches box full of it disparate, it was a fun day, we didn't know what they were. always had that place in mind. wall and river full of it.

Those are cool! I have a recent video of limonite pseudomorphs that kind of cube up. Similar to what you where finding but in ball form and not in the host rock.
The spikey looking fossils seem like they're probably Rugossa, or Horn coral. The pyrite forms as organic material, composed of Iron Phosphates, breaks down into Iron Sulphides, which in turn breaks down into Iron Oxide and native/elemental sulphur. Pyrite itself is an Iron sulphide, hence why it's always good to keep it in a dry area (to help prevent Hydrogen sulphide build-up). The two secondary minerals to watch out for (in the cautious way) when digging Pyrite is Arsenopyrite, which is a toxic form of Pyrite formed of Arsenic, and Galena, a lead ore which forms under similiar conditions to the sulphides :) love the video!!

My grandfather was a major rockhound and we would come across it often while mining in NC. I never developed an appreciation for it though, because he would say, "aww it's just pyrite" and often discard it. However, as far as I can remember, those pieces were never as large as the ones you found. He grew up in the the Great Lakes area though. Anyway, it was pretty cool watching you find those shiney well formed cubes. Maybe you could share what gets you so excited about pyrite? That would cool to know.🙂

Just saw this and had to ask...do you know how valuable pyrite specimens actually can be? Like I've had many that would sell for ten times a handful of precious gems I've found. And yeah I may be a mineralogist, gemologist and geologist but I'm not speaking bias to those professions and skills of mine when I say pyrite is absolutely stunning (when fully formed/terminated), it is so reflective and brilliant that in ancient times and even medieval times it was actually used as a mirror. As a matter of fact my own families ancestors (I'm a Native American Lenni Lenape/Mohican Indian) used pyrite as a mirror as well. I'm from Ohio (literally the Mohican Valley in which I am to be heir to chiefdom from the lineage of the Wolf Clan in which I trace from ironically) and we have some world class specimens here especially a little south of me. I strongly urge to look up after reading this if you do, world class Ohio pyrite specimens and world class pyrite of Spain. I can tell you've never seen pyrite how it actually looks just inclusions and/or small masses of the mineral not it's terminated form. It's not just a crystal of the cubic system its also a common pseudomorph to or from many other minerals and can form in many spectacular forms. So also look up pyrite "Sun Stars", pyrite "nodules", mineral pseudomorphs from pyrite, and pyrite pseudomorphs. You're going to get out and look for some. And if you get some nice ones you can part with(very hard if you are a collector) you can make A LOT of money from them especially because of how high of demand there is and how many people love it. @@tophermohegan9797 WOW! I had no idea. My grandfather actually was from Ohio. I am surprised he didn't know. However, that old man had his own idea of value so maybe he did. Lol. I thank you though, for sharing your knowledge with me. I have always had a great deal of respect for Native/ Indigenous people's and their connection to nature. My aunt (by marriage) who passed a few years ago, studied Native American History in college. I believe her lineage was in small part Native American. She had a special bond with her horses that she passed down to my cousins.

I know there’s pyrite around where I’m at in Missouri but I’ve only found a few random pieces... there’s a quarry I REALLY want to get into... chalcopyrite and ruby jack sphalerite!

You can get a gallon of muriatic acid at any hardware store or pool chem supply. It's cheap. Just do it outside and be careful - it's essentially hydrochloric acid. It's also great for cleaning up shells, if you dip them for about 3-4 seconds.

It looks like some of that already has "pyrite disease," It would be cool to find the quarry where the rip-rap came from.
Good stuff dude. Those look like some nice specimens, just watch out for "pyrite disease." I had a beautiful cluster of large pyrite crystals, collected by me in Dale City, VA, in one of my display cabinets. By the time I realized the specimen was crumbling apart, it was to late to save it.

@@WILDKYLE - I looked it up and it seems pyrite disease is triggered by moisture in the air, aka humidity and you living in Florida, well, ya know... One way to preserve your specimens is to store them in an airtight container.

You should try making Bismuth crystals on your house, is easy and very funny.
Iron out works to clean them up.
Have you found the queue that stone came from. If not you should. Then you can dig for the big clusters
If you like pyrite, try to get to Idaho someday. We are a great state for rock hounds. No shark teeth though...lol.

Hey WK. I'm guessing that's either county or state erosion control. Is it legal to bust up the rocks. I know a few places in Fla I might try. I've seen the rusty spots
pyrite is everywhere here in COLO maybe not crystals but lots of pyrite. people think they have found gold but not.......
You can get the Pyrite cubes out by using Muriatic acid in short dipping times ( 15min or so ) it appears that the matrix is limestone so when put in the acid it will bubble like mad , MAD I SAY!! after you do a dip move the pyrite and what's left of the matrix over to a bucket that you have mixed water and baking soda into , so that the acid if neutralized, then spray them off with water ... Also wear gloves and eye protection and either an apron or old cloths you don't mind getting holes in them. Also that pyrite is pretty but it almost looks likes Galena on the T.V.
Galena is another term for pyrite… pyrite is an iron ore, hence the rust surrounding a lot of the stones. The cubes usually look golden, thus their common name is fools gold.
Another iron ore is hematite, which has a silvery look, but a scratch test will show red… I love rocks and minerals!
Pyrite and Galena are important sulfide minerals but they are different from each other in various aspects. Pyrite is iron ore while galena is lead ore. 9 times out of 10 hematite will be rusted in color until polished there is also magnitie which is an iron ore base but will usually be more magnetic than pyrite or hematite .... But Pyrite and Galena are two diffrent things

Go to Bellevue and look around outside the quarry. The ones you found aren't the best but still a great find. The ones in Bellevue are attached to calsite and are still gold. I have one that's 4 pounds of pyrite and calcite. you can get even bigger ones if you'd like. there are a lot in the area the you can see from the side of the road

Make sure to just use any chemicals on only the pyrite of any specimens you want to leave some matrix on. Otherwise, you'll clean the beautiful oxide stains on the matrix too! As for getting whole crystals out of the matrix, maybe try just water in an ultrasonic bath? Test 1 piece first, of course. Limestone (calcium carbonate) doesn't get along real well with tap water, so my theory is that it should soften up and the vibrations should be enough to shake it loose, but the pyrite is dense enough to stay in tact ...in theory. As for the ones staying in matrix, a cheap air scribe, or the right dremel bit should do the trick.

A rusty rock leads me to belive its iron deposits meaning all these minerals are closely related on the periodic table its only takes a certain forest to change it from one form to the next.

Acid like dilute muratic acid, or vinegar will dissolve the limestone.
Mineral Calcite is Limestone
Ocsolic acid will take all the rust off and leave you a beautiful crystal. Over night in a old crock pot.(on heat). You can find it any drug store...worth a try. I would say
Oxalic acid
