- Stephen Hawking is a theoretical physicist and cosmologist, whose scientific books and public appearances have made him an academic celebrity. He is known for his contributions to the fields of cosmology and quantum gravity, especially in the context of black holes. He has also achieved success with works of popular science in which he discusses his own theories and cosmology in general.
John Preskill is the Richard P. Feynman Professor of Theoretical Physics, and Director of the Institute for Quantum Information at Caltech. His recent research has focused primarily on quantum computation and quantum information theory. Preskill is a two-time recipient of the Associated Students of Caltech Teaching Award.
Rives is a poet by trade and a paper engineer by training. He has appeared on multiple seasons of HBO's "Def Poetry Jam" and he was the host of Bravo TV's "Ironic Iconic America," which required him to drive around the United States with a supermodel in a red '67 Cadillac El Dorado. He realizes he gets some ridiculously sweet gigs. Rives is the co-host of the annual TEDActive conference and his passions include wordplay, rooftops and designing pop-up books.
Kip Thorne is a theoretical physicist, best known for his prolific contributions in gravitation physics and astrophysics and for having trained a generation of prominent scientists. A longtime friend and colleague of Stephen Hawking and Carl Sagan, he was the Feynman Professor of Theoretical Physics at Caltech, and one of the world's leading experts on the astrophysical implications of Einstein's general theory of relativity.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event: In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)
On January 14, 2011, Caltech hosted TEDxCaltech, an exciting one-day event to honor Richard Feynman, Nobel Laureate, Caltech physics professor, iconoclast, visionary, and all-around "curious character." Visit TEDxCaltech.com for more details. - วิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยี
Two of my favorite professors and geniuses of cosmology and the incomparable Steven Hawking.
I saw Stephen Hawking and Kip Thorn's presentations on black holes last month in Cupertino and they were great. Hawking has an awesome sense of humor :)
I can’t believe the sense of humor they have. THEY ARE LITERALLY ONE OF THE GREATEST MINDS OF THE CENTURY. Especially Stephen Hawking. It brings me joy everytime I see it. I can’t believe the video views. It should have been one of the most viewed TedX talks in history.
🤔 Caltech is the only school that would have done a “Who wants to be a millionaire?” parody.😂 Remarkable!!!
at 9:44 on the right in jacket and blue shirt is Craig Venter sequencer of the human genome and at 9:49 is celebrated theoretical physicist Leonard Susskind with his hand on his face.
spotted them too!
i feel kind of sad for Hawking... he came all the way there just to say "the final answer is Richard Feynman"
I was in attendance that day at CalTech ... actually, most everyone saw the fact that Hawking would do that as the supreme act of homage to Feynman ... also, Hawking was known to have a particularly well developed and wicked sense of humor: so I suspect he liked doing this.
Simply amazing TED talk. Thanks for the upload!
What!!??? You have Jon preskill, kip thorne, Stephen Hawking and Leonard suskind....and that's the best you can come up with! You dissapoint me Tedx!!
seriously
Watching after 10 years, my pleasure✨.
"What do you care what people think?"
"Surely you're joking"
Ahh physics humour....
😂
Even I knew the answer to the first question. I am fascinated about Richard Feynman.
Thank you
Chip Thorn is one of my best scientests.
Absolutely fun and awesome.
Nipun Mehta's talk... Fantastic, inspiring, truly beautiful, and more. For info only---to my knowlege there is an organisation -and now a very large one, which has been practising the principal 'of giving for the next person'. That is the VIPPASANA meditation group headed by Goenkaji in India for about 30+ years.
the background music from 2001 a space odyssey is a nice touch...
i like the 2001 space odyssey music when Hawking enters.
Too good !
@untwerf
Sure! It's about information paradox (the argument between them). I have also noticed that Susskind neither stood neither appauded.
probably the best physicists alive and the cheapest production value possible
THIS IS THE MOST UNCOMFORTABLE THING IVEEVER WATCHED BRAH
i love you sir stephen hawking
They were good friends despite a few little tiffs. I mean, they participated in debates and conferences together for decades, I'm sure eventually Susskind started to feel weird applauding for someone he sees all the time.
@untwerf I thought Susskind looked kind of embarrassed by the whole thing. I've never heard there was any animosity between him and Hawking regarding the black hole information paradox issue but I confess that I haven't read his book on the subject yet.
Mis-spelled Kid Throne for Kip Thorne.
thoroughly entertained ...
তনিমা হক easy to please are we?
blank plank hmm, what do you wanna to mean!!! haven't you been entertained?
তনিমা হক Not really. I agree with the guy below: "Good watch, but too scripted to be funny." Humour is subjective anyway. Goodday!
blank plank
you know what, they are scientist and they have provided their best as actors ;) , at least to me. But I agree with you, "Humour is subjective anyway". Thanks and Goodday you too...
:)
1:40 "Nobody's Home Dude"
hmm... I notice at around 9:50 that Susskind neither stood nor applauded... could this be related to some debates that he and Hawking had in the past?
kip "throne" ?
+starfox KID Throne =))))
Is that Craig Venter at 9:44?
I saw Leonard Susskind at 9:47
Great observation.
I love these TED talks, I really would love to attend one.
THE MAN HIMSELF!!!!
Was it the Richard Feynman festival ??????
Legendary Stephen Hawking!
Dude, i wanna go to school there! XD
When Stephen appeared, it was like god came in.
Jesus Steven, you truly are a Treasure to be cherished, Thank you for being my friend and colleague (Jr. colleague ?:), peace and love, Doug .P. S. nice shirt and jacket!
kbc tune
i like
I like that Richard Feynman character and I find that many outstanding people have good humor. OK I got a laugh out of this.
Rip and miss Professor Stephen Hawking
(Candy Chan , 2022 , Hong Kong)
equals don't stand up when one enters!!
I love how he spoke to Hawk in a very slow, almost reverent manner. It's almost as if he were speaking to....god.
No, that is not the reason.. Susskind would not be so childish and correct me if I'm wrong, but don't they have a friendly relationship, despite their duel and debates in the area of blackholes?
don't play dumb with me Thornes!!!
Kip Thorne's on the stage, mate. Susskind is in an aisle seat in the audeince; he's the other guy in the black shirt who looks like Thorne's evil twin at 9:50 .
10:13-10:21 Awkward moment as Kip waits for the last chord of Zarathustra to fade out before talking.
omg kid throne twin brother of susskind??? someone pls tell
All the answer is D
that was painfull
Kip Baldman would've been a much more appropriate answer.
Feynming Things Out ?
I'm a physics student at caltech and I've interacted with both these men and this is just so painful to watch. gg
Leonard Susskind??? LOOOOLLL pull the over one!!!! LOL
@untwerf lol you are right! it's like he is trying to hide from him
Lol this was good!
This is absolutely nonsense!
For fun :)
Everyone keeps saying it was Leonard Susskind doing this skit but it's KIP THORNE! And why did Hawking waste his time with this? Did he do a full set at some point? Maybe he was there 'cause out of the cpl vids I watched, they are about Richard Feynman. So I'm thinking this TED was dedicated to him but if so then I find it kind of sad that they couldn't even clean up the damn stage for him! That's insulting!
Wow.. Scientist are under scrutiny....
KID THRONE =))))))))))))))))))
"Kid Throne"????????
So embarrassing.
I think it was intended. He also called Preskill "Pretzel".
These were not the funny kids in school.
This has amusing facts in it but I found it pretty akward....
Kid throne ,lol
or perhaps because of the utter stupidity of what he was watching, which is quite clear from the final remarks on his own speech later on that evening
WOW! awsome!LOL
worshiped like a god!
well, he IS the man.
LOL!
XD FUNNY
Lol....
welcome to who wants to be a millionaire
you had real geniuses and best you could do is this ?????? i am disappointed Ted
Wow. That was dumb.
This is dumb.
