We went to Kalibo Ati-Atihan Festival yesterday and wow! We have no actual number but up to 100k or more people there. And from what we saw were were the only foreigners? Tourists need to see this!!

I thought Kalibo is near Boracay. Are the tourists in Boracay not aware of what is happening in Kalibo? Maybe the local government of Kalibo needs to advertise their festival. It seems that only the locals know that there is going to be a festival.

I love Ati-atihan, they're the original and Mother of all Philippines Festivals.. but for Mardi-grass Vibe I prefer Sinulog of Cebu while Tribal vibe for Dinagyang of Iloilo. Those two Festivals are I'm dying to attend. Sinulog is so much Fun, vibrancy and Festivities, while Dinagyang is Tribal vibe, cultural and well presented.
We also have Festivals here in Vigan in May guys but not as big as in Visayas but it's enjoyable too.

I think the Mardi Gras of Asia is the Sinulog Festival of Cebu City (every January). Be there during the grand parade and group presentation. Flower Festival called Panagbenga in Baguio City in February. Re-enactment of Passion and Crucifixion of Christ on Good Friday in Pampanga. Higantes. Festival in Angono, Rizal in November

I miss those fiestas, we have Masskara in Bacolod and I miss burning calories just walking around and enjoying the festivities. Don't worry bout some of the audience covering their faces when in focus, they are friendly but some may have ditch an appointment or classes lol, and they just don't want to be seen or they get in trouble when they get home lol. Enjoy! How fun!

Hello Bianca and Mike, nice you visited Aklan but the real Ati-atihan celebration is next year on the Feast of Sto. Ninõ on January.
It is just a prelude of the real celebrations but during day of the event, all blackened competitors are all dressed up in their unique home town costumes with different drum sound beats and dance.
Anyway great to see it ahead of time to experience the fun!
And just for info .... my family is from MAKATO AKLAN!

Ati Atihan, Dinagyang and Sinulog are all January Festivals. They are for the Señor Sto Niño or the babay Jesus. October is for Masskara in Bacolod.

  • @JEDI938

Wait until you see the Iloilo;s Ati-Atihan/Dinagyang festival in January. There are different competing tribes. Each make their own costumes and they choreograph their own dance moves and drum beats! It also usually tells a story as to the origin of the festival and as to its adoration of the blessed baby Jesus( Sto. Nino). Try to get a seat at the main grand stand where you can see the different tribes compete in front of judges. Try to get there early in the morning though before the festival starts. You will not be disappointed!

This is not yet the festival proper, it is only an opening event to let the public know about the upcoming festival which will be held on every 3rd week of january. The festival would last for about a week where you can see people dancing on streets from morning til evening. Hope you'll able to come back by that time and i assure you it would be more festive and fun

It's about a celebration made by our Datus, which is our ancestors who escaped from Borneo who came to the island of Panay, to the Aetas tribe (small, curly and dark skin tribes) who already inhabited the island. To pay tribute to the friendliness of Aetas to them and provided the island to them. They created a feast and celebration through a dance which imitating them. Ati atihan means acting like Aetas.

Atiatihan isn't really advertised because it's not meant to boost tourism. Just like Boracay, it was promoted by foreign tourists and not LGU's.
The festival is originally a Pagan Thanksgiving Festival between the indigenous Ati People and the Malay Aklanons.
As you can see, the spirit of this Festival is totally different to other Visayan Commercial Fetivals. Almost every town in Aklan has its own interpretation of Atiatihan Festival. It is really in the spirit of Aklanons and not a choreographed Festival to please tourists like those of Highly Urbanized Cities of Bacolod, Iloilo, and Cebu.
