What was really terrifying about Dano's version of the Riddler is that it was based on the REAL LIFE Zodiac Killer! If I were one of those murdered victim's friends or family members, I probably would NOT go see this movie, because it might start to bring back some seriously haunting memories... 😬

I also think that, it really was what the Riddler needed, to be taken seriously as a real threat, and not just a turd in a bowling hat moronic green suit. I know everyone’s gonna have their own opinions own this version of the riddler, but I thought this was a very interesting take on the Riddler (the whole Zodiac killer inspiration makes perfect sense for Matt Reeves version) but I loved it

What I love about what The Batman did for Riddler is that they didn’t treat him like a joke. The Arkham games did him good but could’ve been better and Gotham’s interpretation of Ed was done in a mix of Seriousness and Jokes which was done fine but almost every adaptation of the character has been done as a Joke. The Batman made him a force to be reckoned with and he was actually convincing as a criminal in this new movie just like the games and Gotham. I’d say the Riddler was finally done justice in this film but Jim Carrey will always have the nostalgia

In 1994/1995 Jim Carrey was one of the biggest stars in the world, so it made financial sense to cast him in a Batman movie. There was a heavy push from Warner Bros for a lighter Batman after McDonald's received backlash for associating with the darker Tim Burton movies from the late 80s/early 90s. More serious fans of Batman did have issues with Carrey's Riddler back then, as The Batman Animated Series that came out in 1993 had a far more serious Riddler. Carrey was doing a tribute performance to Frank Gorshin's Riddler from the 1960s Adam West Batman,.....and as others have pointed out, Carrey was also just playing himself a lot too.

Not really. Makes no sense if he wants to conceal his identity, not very creative or original, just a jumpsuit with question marks. Paul Dano has a lot of thought put into his, inspired from the zodiac killer, and is actually a good diguise for someone who wants to keep his true identity a secret.

Let's note first. We are watching a superhero movie.
Therefore, the villain must be the hero. But not just another killer from a horror movie.
Jim Carey played exactly the superhero of the villain, an insane person with a simple motivation and hatred for everything, he amuses his pride in a bright form. His character has a special sick charisma.
Like any super villain, he radiates pathos and that is enough.
In the new Batman, the Riddler is just an ordinary maniac. Yes, smart and cunning, but still ordinary.
Yes, he is a villain, yes he has a tough approach, but he is definitely not a super villain. This character is very ordinary, even with all his cunning plan.
But let's not forget that the film uses high-quality modern music and special effects of the film.
    Conclusion.
Why should we watch a superhero movie when there is no super villain in it, but there are superheroes? :)

As a kid, I loved Jim Carrey as the character, hokey as he was…he WAS Jim fricken Carrey, and I always enjoy his energy. However, there’s no question, Dano was such a dark and serious look at the character…done right. He’s smart, creepy, sinister. Basically, what Ledger did to Joker, he did for Riddler.

Carrey's riddler was definitely those things but he was basically doing an over the top take of the character from the 60s comics and tv show. In interviews he basically has said he tried to be like Frank Gorshin. He's basically a lesser joker. Which is a misconception because in most other mediums since the 60s he's hardly been portrayed as "funny" or "charismatic". Hes usually been potrayed as more of a narcissist. That thinks hes more intelligent and better than everyone else. He's more calm and methodical in his ways. See the way hes potrayed in the arkham games or batman the animated series for example.

I'm probably one of the few who has not seen The Batman yet because, quite frankly, I don't have much desire to. The over-emphasis on realism that all of the live-action Batman movies have had Post-Nolan have never done anything to really want to invest me into the worlds of these more recent films the way that the gothic, larger than life style of the older Batman movies always did. Even if the Burton/Schumacher movies may not have been perfect themselves I still find myself wanting to return to them more often for depicting the world of a more comic book style Batman, which is still the kind of thing that I personally want to see out of a live-action Batman movie.
The thing people complained about the most with Schumacher's films was how they had gotten to be way too cartoonish in tone by Batman & Robin, because of Schumacher complying to what WB wanted out of the franchise. Obviously it was enough of a problem to nearly kill the film series, but then Nolan's solution was to take things too much into the opposite extreme, making the movies so realistic as to risk losing the initial appeal of the world of Batman for some fans. People are always going to be applauding this creative direction to the high heavens as being successful for the franchise, but then they never consider how this direction can be just as polarizing for fans as Batman & Robin was back in the day, but in a different manner.
Even if The Riddler in Batman Forever may have been Jim Carrey playing himself as much as he was playing The Riddler, and even if it's true that him playing The Riddler just after enjoying him as The Mask was part of the reason childhood me wanted to watch the movie, I still see "The Riddler" with his portrayal more than I see it with The Batman's Riddler. Yes you can say that it's an intentionally different take on the character as much as you could with Heath Ledger as The Joker, but it's not one that works for me, and that's something that fans should always consider before they automatically declare every new rebooted take on a classic comic book character for the movies as being "better than before".
If WB really wants to get some of us fans more invested into the newer live-action Batman movies rather than alienated from them, then how about bringing some of that bold and ambitious style of the old movies back into the newer ones? For once. Learn from the mistakes of Batman & Robin by knowing how to balance the style and tone as well as Burton did with his movies. Though in all honesty Batman: The Animated Series has always been my definitive take on Batman more than any of the live-action ones, which never had any problem with style given that it's animated and could have a lot of creative freedom with the look of Gotham City and its characters as much as being invested in the show for its characterizations and writing. Even John Glover's Riddler is one that I'm always going to be more likely to want to go back to than Paul Dano. What might work for some Batman fans is not going to work for every Batman fan.

The difference between Paul Dano and Jim Carrey is that Paul Dano did the work!
Dano dug deep into the character of a murderous psychopath who was never shown love or support his entire life. You can tell this from his heavy breathing and screaming as he kills each of his victims. You hear the excitement and hatred that he’s been waiting to unleash for decades. You can also hear his precision and genius mind through his soft talking. Like every serial killer, he’s super cautious and plans out everything.
Jim Carrey literally just gave us Ace Ventura and Lloyd Christmas, which doesn’t really fall into the category of a murderous psychopath. Dano wins period.
