    I had to smile at the disclaimer in the beginning of the video every gear head I know including myself has experienced that jolt from a Plug or Coil wire ! I have a Uncle that grew up in rural Louisianna and he told me a story about a trick they played on one of the local Bullies that if he was to Urinate on the Spark plug of a running lawn mower it would shut the engine off he said that kid rolled around for a half an hour grabbing his Junk and yelling how bad it hurt the others thought it was hysterical

    • @blackkeymaestro
      @blackkeymaestro 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Spark plugs either work or don't work. No such thing as "weak" plugs. You either test whether they are working with this tester, or you do a visual check and see if the ends are corroded or rusted. If any of these are true, time to replace. End of story.

    • @lizardking8388
      @lizardking8388 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@blackkeymaestro You are wrong. Most spark plugs are resistive. They make them resistive to limit the electrical noise that gets radiated causing interference with the radio and other circuits. They will have a resistance of 5K or less measured through the center electrode. When this resistance breaks down over time and becomes more than 5K, the spark produced becomes weaker as there is less current through the spark. If a spark plug is suspected of being weak, you should remove it, clean the electrode and do a resistance check with a multimeter. If resistance is more than 5K, the plug should be replaced. If the plug is of the non-resistive type, this is not an issue as they will last much longer. Incidentally, they also make resistive and non-resistive wires which suffer the same faults and can be tested with a multimeter as well. You should use either resistive plugs or resistive wires; never both resistive or non-resistive. I prefer to use resistive plugs with non-resistive wires as the wires will have a longer longevity.

      A plug that fires outside the engine is not a reliable working test. Inside the cylinder it has to be able to withstand immense pressures, varying temperatures of heat produced by the engine, burn off oil and other contaminants to function correctly. A plug that gives spark not subjected to any resistance may fail under engine working conditions.

    This test allows you to address both the ignition coil and the spark plugs. So if your coil pack needs to be replaced you’ll know based on no light from the test light. Power goes from the battery, to the ECM, to the Distributor Cap, to the spark plugs which distributes power to different responsibilities of power: compression, ignition coil and ignition relay power, airflow used to pump fuel into the throttle body to send a required amount of fuel to the engine, or fuel pump pressure & power. If too much fuel is sent to the engine your check engine light will come on. It’s referred to as fuel trim and it’s the reason a lot of cars have a check engine light because improperly distributed voltage is distributed to the fuel pump which means too much fuel is pumped into the throttle body.

    • @TechnoTinker
      @TechnoTinker 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@hernani1271 Sure. A bad wire or coil could fail to deliver good spark, but this sometimes depends on other factors. Some wires might perform OK under mild stress but fail at higher RPMs. If one cylinder is testing bad, you can swap the wire with a known good wire and see if the problems follows the wire or the plug. You can also swap identical coil packs to rule those out. Don't try anything you don't understand, and don't take to much advice from a random non-mechanic (me) commenting on TH-cam.

    It's a bit boring watcing you test all four plugs. I liked the first plug: this was my favourite. Plug 2 was ok but 3 and four i got a sense of déjà vu. BUT the reason I sat through the whole 6 minutes was to see what happens with a faulty plug. But no.

      I am actually doing this now on COP and you just plug it to the end of the boot where is the spring showing, just make sure it has contact between each other in case the side of the tester rod is lose inside the boot and of course make sure to keep distance enough between metal parts and naked conductors.

    you are testing for spark not testing that the plug is good. big difference.
    also you say this also works for motorcycles and while that may be true if you rig it up right. it is a pain to use on some because their spark plug does not have a tip that fits this but is much smaller or what is known as a stud type. the tester in the video is designed to use on a large terminal but can be rigged up for the smaller one. it just does not work as well with those.
    here is a video showing the different terminal types.

    This is the worst tool I have ever used. I don't understand how you can get the rubber boot to slide, mine won't slide and I can't get the darn thing to clip. The male end keep trying to eject itself from the spark coils and after wasting about an hours trying to get it to work I lost a coil spring wich I'm not sure if I can buy on itself . So now I can't start my car and have to find a coil spring . Worst tool ever created. This incident is a proof that it's nice when everything goes well like in this video but that's probably not how it's gonna go in real life if you don't know what your doing. Hate this tool, don't buy it.
