Just came up with another method for flat panels. use an old glass sliding door I found out for garbage, wax it up real good and lay up the your piece on it. And yes it comes out as smoth as glass. Now you can cut it out for anything you like ( nice dash etc. )

How about trying a short hair roller ? I think it would control the thickness better.
