I love this series SO much. seriously. love love love it. I haven't shot with film in many years, and don't know if I'll ever get back into it, but I simply enjoy feeling like I'm following along with you and seeing the beautiful things you capture as you capture them. and then seeing the actual photographic results afterwards, which never fail to impress me. you truly have a gift! please never stop making these!
i've got a very similar setup currently. the bessa r3m with the summicron c 40 mm and I couldn't be happier. I got used to the way of activating the lightmeter very quickly and also to the stiff focusing on the lens. awesome video, I am looking forward to your next one! greetins from vienna
The Bessa series (R2A, R3A, R4) are one of the most underrated devices. All the cameras I have mentioned have better parameters than the Leica M7, and certainly they are far ahead technologically than Leica M6 and older. But this is only Voigtlander (German-Japanese). Personally, I see no reason to overpay for products from Wetzlar. The second thing which I would like to refer is the emerging problems with batteries you mention in several videos. Personally, on one set of batteries I work for about 2 years without the need to think about their existence (Bessa R2A). Maybe this particular model has some problems with incorrect energy consumption?
I have only had the experience with this Bessa model and I didn’t like it. I’m not a sucker for technologically advanced stuff: my favoritr rangefinder is still the Leica M3, which doesn’t even have a light meter...! I’m glad you enjoy your Bessa R2A. Any camera in the right hands is a fantastic tool. :)
Eduardo, I currently own a Canon 7 rangefinder with the LTM 50mm f1.4 and love it, but am very much considering the Bessa series for their M - mount lenses also. How does the body of the camera feel to you? Cheap, Good, Great, Smooth? My Canon 7 is so smooth its a dream, but I am always afraid because its old and I need more of a "tool" that I am not afraid to throw around. I am just wondering how it compared to the Leica's you've shot, it seems to be very similar to the M4 or M6 Leica's, what do you think?
Still trying to figure out exactly what it is about your work but your shots really do capture the street. Whether its the angles, the composition, the juxtaposing of subjects, or all that coming together, they hold a lot of content. I'm not really a Bruce Gilden fan but I feel his quote "if you can smell the street by looking at the photo" is really accurate about good street photography and really comes through in your work.
Hi Eduardo, cool series ! A few things I would like to know since you shot TX400 @ 3200 (pushed +3) : which developer did you use (D76? Rodinal? ) at which dilution and for how long ? Many thanks for the information, and great music btw !
+HappyTime MachineTraveler I always use D-76 at stock dilution. I don't remember the minutes, but you can look it up in the massive developing chart: www.digitaltruth.com/devchart.php
Hey Eduardo! Really love your photos, and the color of the video as well! I'm considering to get a R2a/r3a too, but I've read about people saying that it's very hard to see the 40mm frame lines for glass wearers(I wear glasses). Does this matter bother you when framing shots? And what do you think about the 1:1 viewfinder, is it worth it to go for R3a instead of the standard 35mm frame lines in r2a? I'm new to rangefinder, I'll get a 50mm first but haven't decided what lens to get next, 35 or 40mm, so the viewfinder in both Bessas will be a factor to think of.
+jedwinlo if you wear glasses, I wouldn't recommend you getting a 1:1 viewfinder. it will be VERY hard to compose with. the 40mm are quite uncomfortable if you use glasses with the R3a. also, consider a mechanical Bessa. my biggest advice would be: go to a store, try them and see if you like it. your gut will tell you if it's the camera you were looking for or not. :)
+EduardoPavezGoye Thanks for your advice! Just went to a camera shop today and they said there will be the last batch of new R2As coming in May, definitely getting one!
Cosina had made cameras for many other brands along the time, like Nikon, Yashica, Canon, Olympus,... and always based in two models, one full manual and one with aperture priority. In fact this camera have the same heart that Nikon FE10, and her sister (Voigtlander Bessa R3M) the same that Nikon FM10, Olympus OM 2000, Yashica FX-3 super 2000,... Unlike this other cameras that you can find with a very interesting price, Bessa series are very expensive because they are telemetric and Leica month (thread or bayonet). Personally I considered in the past to buy a camera of this series, but I think the price is not justified (at the end is a Cosina, not a Leica), so I continue with my Nikon’s FM series.
People are asking fantasy prices for the Bessa r3x and r4x these days. I remember many reports of issues when they came on the market. The build quality is not that good, and they certainly are not on par with other expensive alternatives.
Hey there, I have a question I hope you could answer. I have this same camera, I purchased this as a 2nd camera to go with my Leica M6. The issue that I see is that the film advance lever is very loose. Like it works fine, but I can move it up and down, like away from the body of the camera several mm. I am wondering if yours does the same or if it doesn't. Maybe it's just because it's a bit of a cheaper and it's totally normal or maybe mine is broken? I just want to know either way so I can know what to expect. If you could share with me the experience you have based on yours that would be awesome!
I'm sorry, dude, I don't have this camera... you can see at the beginning of the video that my friend George hands me his camera and explains stuff to me.
Yeah I figured as much! I just thought maybe when you were using it for this video maybe you noticed if the level was nice and tensioned or had some play in it. No worrries!
do you always push films ?? i'm afraid to push trix at 1600 iso as i got good result outdoor with native iso but i want to try shooting indoor or at night. what do you think about pushing for this purpose ? thanks a lot awesome channel Ed !
And Epson made the coolest digital rangefinder out of this model. I wish they would do an up to date model. Most of the photo look a bit under exposed.

Buen video!

Gran trabajo!
+Lyoh if the camera has a lightmeter, you need to set it to 3200, so the readings are correct. if you leave it set at... let's say, 400, the camera will think you are shooting at 400 and once you develop, you will actually be overdeveloping three steps (400, 800, 1600, 3200). so yeah. adjust the ISO on the camera. now, if the camera doesn't have a lightmeter, you don't adjust anything, just remember the speed you were shooting the film at and process accordingly.
Can anyone recommend a good supplier in London? I've found so many used camera shops but I just feel that until I buy a camera and use it, I'll never know whether it works. Risky when it involves hundreds of £. Any advice would be appreciated.
+EduardoPavezGoye Looking for a Canon QL17 GIII but really I'm looking to try something fairly small with a rangefinder and a nice lens. Would it be a good way to go? It's the firs time I'll be using film for AGES so I don't really know what I'm doing. Many thanks for the recommendation of shop :)
Still haven't been top MrCad (but I will). I went for the Canonet QL17 because it was so pretty. It's totally unforgiving but I'm having great fun shooting film again, learning and improving, with the help of a little light meter app on my phone. I still love your blog - please keep up the good work :)
you know what would be really funny ?a video with a really crappy kids camera...^^ as a challenge and of course it would be really awesome to see the results as always awesome vid.(:
German glass and Japanese glass do not produce the same look on films - no matter how sharp the Japanese lens may be. An old-time photographer once explained to me that this was on account of the differences in the sand used to make the glass.
+Evangeline Cheng usually no, but when I feel it would be too rude to snap a picture out of someone, I ask them with a smile. 90% of the time, they say yes.
You seem like a creeper with your style of taking photo then scurrying away haha! Take the shot, stay there, take another -- dont worry about subject seeing you. Ps, I have same complaint about accidental shots while trying to take light meter reading (with my R2A) lol.
You need to do some film tests because the blacks are not black enough and the whites are dull. The whites would need longer development and doubling the film speed would yield deeper blacks. Depends on cameras, film and developers, of course.
Well, I figured - which makes the evaluation problem even worse. As for Tri-X at 3200, interesting experiment, but I've tired it and was disappointed overall. I went back to Delta 3200.
of course you can shoot at night at whatever sensitive speed you want. the problem is that you cannot use a low ASA rating if you want to freeze your subject by shooting at 1/500 (so you can snap a picture while walking or while they are in movement), on a street without lamp lights with your ASA at 400.
PC screens/media viewers exaggerate grain. 400asa is going to have some grain , of course, but if he prints these or even posts them on insta or flickr they will look fine. I have often been disappointed when I first see scans of my negs on a pc, and then delighted when I see them on another medium. And he does say he changed to the 50mm lens because he was struggling with the focusing.

+Claire Andrews oh thank you so much, Claire! I'm really glad you enjoy them. :D
Love it! you got some great photos out of it! Sorry I didn't give you a spare set of batteries too!
+George Turner my friend, you didn't have to! it was impossible to know. the good thing is it made the video easier to edit. ;)
God i love your videos. The photos, the music, your personality. Its really good content, thank you Eduardo.
i've got a very similar setup currently. the bessa r3m with the summicron c 40 mm and I couldn't be happier. I got used to the way of activating the lightmeter very quickly and also to the stiff focusing on the lens. awesome video, I am looking forward to your next one! greetins from vienna

Great shots Eduardo. I didn't expect the photos to turn out that good with the tri-x pushed to 3200. I'm pleasantly surprised!
Looking at photos I say that this trix was not pushed to 3200 - it was underexposed and overdeveloped.
Eduardo, I've watched a couple of your videos and they are well produced. I especially like you choice of music for the soundtrack. Nice work!
+Tommy Moore thanks tommy! I love the bare drums as a soundtrack. :D
I love shootfilm series :)
I love your eye for scenes! Your stealth mode is on a whole 'nother level.
+Juji Sam haha, thank you very much!
Amazing. I like these grains of the pushed TX film.

great photos and the way you make them. cool video too
The lens change made a difference in the photos. I've always wanted one of those Bessas.
Amazing as always! I wish I lived somewhere busy enough that I could go up that close to people without creeping them out.
A tough shoot for you but you still got some nice images - well done. An enjoyable series, thumbs up.
another great vid man! so glad to see your doing these fortnightly.. makes me want to go out and shoot..!
i LOVE the child one! i also like the one with girl-water-dolphin. que lastima para las seis que faltan :) espero el new video

I like the grading you used here. Also I want to grab an R4A since it is discontinued. Would be epic with the Color-Skopar 21mm f/4.

May I ask how do you make your video look the way it looks, I mean colour. Really love it!
Good job! Keep on shooting and making videos!!!!!!
very nice shots! like the style. well done. out of curiosity what camera did you use for the video?
+Farouk Cherchali a cheap Canon EOS M. it's in the description.
Gorgeous camera.
how did you color grade it ? it looks really nice

buy r3m instead battery dies shutter will still work on all speed

I thought you had some great images, even as it got darker! Can't wait to see some more.

I used to push Trix to 1600 but I'm currently more comfortable with asa800. Try 800 first. :)
Silly question.But, as a beginner
I have to ask...
Why you have to push your camera iso to 3200 with iso400 film?
Really great images and vdo btw. : )
Because 400 in the dark is not fast enough to freeze action. I would have to shoot at 1/15 and people will look blurry.
1/30 was not sufficent with a telemetric ?
I have a Bessa L and I had the shutter/meter problem until I got a soft shutter release button best 12 bucks I've ever spent.
I love these videos.

Is the Bessy r ltm or m-mount?
Really cool.
I used to have R2A. And then, I'm usin' MINOLTA CLE.
I love a RF camera.
shijurouh kotobuki Did u move to CLE because of the smaller size ?
hey,is it just me or did anyone find it hard to see the 40mm lines on r3a while wearing glasses?
Nice colour work on the video, it really looks like some Kodak film
Top stuff, as always!
Can anyone recommend a good supplier in London?
I've found so many used camera shops but I just feel that until I buy a camera and use it, I'll never know whether it works. Risky when it involves hundreds of £.
Any advice would be appreciated.
+James Lenney what camera are you looking for? have you ever been to MrCad?
+EduardoPavezGoye Looking for a Canon QL17 GIII but really I'm looking to try something fairly small with a rangefinder and a nice lens. Would it be a good way to go?
It's the firs time I'll be using film for AGES so I don't really know what I'm doing. Many thanks for the recommendation of shop :)
James Lenney A Canon QL17 might be good. a Yashica Electro might work, too. not expensive, and easy to use. let me know what you picked!
+EduardoPavezGoye Cool, will do. Many thanks!
Still haven't been top MrCad (but I will). I went for the Canonet QL17 because it was so pretty.
It was delivered from the US - the light meter doesn't work and the electrics are totally gone in general, but I've cleaned it all out, the lens is good and it functions very well as a full manual.
How tall are you Eduardo?
+Greg McKnight 1,70mts, why?
German glass and Japanese glass do not produce the same look on films - no matter how sharp the Japanese lens may be. An old-time photographer once explained to me that this was on account of the differences in the sand used to make the glass.
Dude you're amazing - new sub!
+bko90 welcome! there's cake on the table.
Do you ever have to ask for permission from the subjects before you shoot?
+Evangeline Cheng usually no, but when I feel it would be too rude to snap a picture out of someone, I ask them with a smile. 90% of the time, they say yes.
your next shoot film episode should be with the canon a1 again aha
Man, i want a bessa r2m so bad...
These are more expensive than Leicas today. How? HOOOOOOWWWW!!??
I would like to see just one video where the photographer pulls Tri-X to 200 asa, shoots in good light and develops properly in D76 1+1.
mamiyapress First time hearing about this. I'll have to try that myself. I'll try on 135 and if you're right, I'll do 120.
Let me know how you get on.
Yeah. I'd like to see that too. I've never pulled it that far and I'm curious about it.
Pls test nikon f4s
Faruk Bursali jejeje, palabras mayores 😉.
El último Mohicano.
Pero mejor F4 a secas, sin “s”.
Every time I see one your video I want to go shoot outside with my pentax k1000. And now outside its a storm.
+Massimiliano Arosio stormy pictures sounds awesome...!
Please, let up on the processing of the video, it's extremely distracting.

Depends on cameras, film and developers, of course.
these are not straight scans, mate.
I spy a JW street cart! lol
Annoying music!!!
The image quality is unusable bad contrast bad grain bad focus
PC screens/media viewers exaggerate grain. 400asa is going to have some grain , of course, but if he prints these or even posts them on insta or flickr they will look fine. I have often been disappointed when I first see scans of my negs on a pc, and then delighted when I see them on another medium. And he does say he changed to the 50mm lens because he was struggling with the focusing.
