Detailing was a sweet gig during peak covid. I was rolling through and had so many calls, I couldn't do it alone. I eventually gave it up as a business because I am not ready to expand that just now, but I tell you, you don't need much to get started and you can see insane profit margins once you get a few cars going. It's all about perception and image initially, the rest is up to you to do a quality job.

Man, it’s so much money in detailing, so much to learn. I’ve done it for 2 yrs. It’s tough sometimes mentally but like you said it’s relaxing. I wanna see you at the top. Keep God first and ask him to turn down the heat.. side note.. Charge more. I was scared to do it until I realized you should show the customer why you charge more. God Bless

Hey Hunter, by far Im not a professional business owner however this is what I would recommend. First and foremost that barrier or boundary of boss and friend needs to be established, however not to the point of a non-enjoyable work experience. In times of heat, you need to be ready to spend a little more money on gas as a business owner and make time periods of 15-30 minute breaks in between details or in the middle just sitting in the van with the AC Blasting. Always have an ice chest with drinks company provided (Write off ;) )on a daily basis. Require that employees wear a long sleeve shirt and pants to cover up as much skin as possible and optionally wear a hat that fully covers the neck for extra heat protection. I would also recommend a couple personal company-provided towels sitting in ice water in a separate ice chest for the detailers in the field to put over their head or anywhere on their skin during work or the break time. Just throwing ideas out to you because this California heat can really be a killer during these times! I would highly recommend that when you get another employee, talk to a lawyer to write up a business liability contract as if an employee gets heat stroke or passes out or anything of the sort, hunters mobile detailing LLC is not responsible. It is a business so take into account of money spent on employees but from a moral standpoint, I would highly suggest biting the bullet and spend the extra $500 a month on drinks, ice, towels, and skin covering apparel such as full brimmed hats, pants, and long sleeve shirts. Good luck man! much love from Cali.

Just know that at the end of the day he is an employee and he’ll never feel as passionate about your business as yourself. My 2 cents would be to give them a percentage of the cars done that day (if possible) that way it motivates them to work harder and faster

    • @flashv4941

Gotta be careful with that sometimes. Then some employees will do a bad job since there in a hurry to do more. Depends on the people and the vibe. But if they continue doing a good job then bonus will just motive them more.

After 25+ yrs I found the industry beat me up, almost lost my love for it. It is an art form. To hear the customer say thankyou and see their look when they get their auto back is priceless. Always remember there is a huge difference between a car cleaner and an auto detailer. Anyone can clean a car, not everyone can detail a car. Or even be taught to. I have been threw so many employees in my years. Many just don't get it. Keep up the great work bro.

I can see you going places man, I see the passion you have for it. One thing I’ve learned that will help a lot is wear shorts, and non dark clothing. Look into getting shirts made from 100% polyester they are much better at keeping you cool. Also bro get sunscreen if you already aren’t. But mostly shorts will help I used to wear pants once I made the switch it was a huge difference.

Good help is hard to find! I’ve come to learn to never become dependent on having workers cause they’re just there for a check.

You should get shorter gun for your Powerwasher. The long wand can potentially hit , scratch a car. Get the short snubby wand

I am a dealer and decided to start a mobile service to ad to the portfolio I mean I pay detailers anyways so why not I have a fully loaded Chevy express with all the equipment I have business cards printed and everything set up but I'm in Phoenix az and even tho I'm not cleaning I'm not gonna hire until it gets a tad cooler the heat is deadly built for it or not this exact situation is why I didn't get the van out there working yet when I do hire cleaners June July August will be a planned slow season were they will do 1 in the morning and 1 at night it's just to hot it kills our employees and equipment and ads a ton of anxiety and stress I have faith you will handle it accordingly thanks for sharing real life experience.

If you was located in Florida, I wouldn't mind taking the position. I actually have my own detailing business but more work mean more money and I normally work by myself but I'm also great with others. I specialize more in exterior more. Such as rims, paint and paint correction etc etc

Yes I understand how he feels about the heat. But you just don't leave like that. He still should have called you to let you know he was quitting. That's is the right way you do things. Sorry Brother keep Your help up.

During college straight out of high school I started a painting business back in 2006-2007 and it was a lot of hard work especially in NYC but the pay was good. Today, if I was to do it again it would be so much easier due to the advancements in airless paint sprayers. My cousin (who was still in high school) and I would make 500 - 1k a job but we had to stop as it was hard work and we had no transportation. It was very difficult jumping on a train with all those tools, ladders, paint poles etc. Car insurance back then was like 1k a month and it was just too much.
