A normal soldering iron is about 20 to 30 watts. At 12 volts that would be about 2 to 2.5 amps current. It's important to have the AC adapter that can put out enough current without overheating and burning out. This could be a shock and fire hazard. The wires from the jack to the tip are very fine and may get hot from the high current. I think the reason why he wrapped the handle with twine was the wires got very warm and it was too hot to handle.
