Good idea but u need to calculate heater resistance first, Usb port supplies 1Amp current if heater draws more usb port will damage.

he wasn't using usb. he hooked it up to 12 volts! usb is 5 volts. but you are right about doing the math.

Great Video, this is the first practical video for making a Soldering Iron with basic parts.
Believe it or not, there are situations (Like Prison) that call for using what you got to get the job done.
In prison, the wire can be retrieved from the element of the HotPots or Stingers that are sold. Usually find a bad hot pot and gut the element for the Nichro Wire. The 12 Volt adapters can be grabbed from various sources but need at least 2 Amps.

Or, just use an old catalytic converter O2 sensor. Most have heaters in them and they are 12V. Just make an insulated handle for it because they get hot enough to solder with.

Why didn't you show how to make the plug-in part of said 12V jigger you made? With the "USB" end?
Cut charger cable and connect the red and black wire to the connector like he did those two big wires and plug it into a 12 volt supply but this has no resistance its basically a short circuit
