Never forget all the early Falcon failures. The secret of Spacex success is that they not only expected early failures, they planned for them and built their processes around them. The wry humor around the phrase "Rapid Unscheduled Disassembly" demonstrates this.

It was the same for legacy auto companies claims they would dominate the EV industry when their MBA were relatively clueless about what a good EV design consists of.

Boeing went to court when it failed to get the contract to develop USAF tankers based on Boeing airliners. After winning another bid Boeing spent many years trying to develop the tanker, long after the planned date. Meanwhile the USAF had to sustain KC-135s built in the 1960s that were very costly to sustain for heavy global US operations. Eventually Boeing lost over $5 billion for contract failures. Meanwhile other allied airforces were operating Airbus KC-30 tankers the USAF actually wanted. Boeing screwed itself by taking legal action against competitors. The Boeing KC-46 is now operational with over 50 tankers built.
This was simply to modify existing airliners into tankers. Tanker technology is over 50 years old.
Who will Boeing sue next and can Boeing afford to win another court verdict.

The management decisions surrounding the development and testing phases of the Starliner program have also been scrutinized. There have been concerns about the adequacy of Boeing's internal review processes and the thoroughness of NASA's oversight. The software issues encountered during the OFT suggested that more rigorous testing and quality control measures might have been needed, particularly given the high stakes involved in human spaceflight 🥇🥇🥰🥰

Yes, but their biggest problem, is it is publicly traded. Computers are running their company. The leadership ONLY cares about the bottom-line. They do not even brief their programs at their reviews. They only care about profit. When they merged with McDonald Douglas, they removed all of the technical people from their board and brought in only those who would push the bottom line.

Big difference? NASA is funded by the government and has to worry about lobbying from said government. Boeing lines pockets and, therefore, is a why they were allowed to do this.

"NASA is funded by the government"? NASA IS the government. Most large contracts are "funded by government", including many with SpaceX. So your comment seems to amount to simply "Boeing is (notably, specially or uniquely, not sure which you mean) corrupt and fails to deliver due to stealing money intended for projects. I'm reminded of a old adage: 'There aren't any 'simple' problems, just simple people.'. If Boeing are thieves it shouldn't be too hard to prove. Go for it.

@@nomdeguerre7265 I agree that it is not a simple issue. The fact that we allow government contractors to bid on a government project and then basically default on that bid is antithetical to the entire process. They should be held to the original contract and should eat any additional costs due to their mismanagement and/or their original disingenuous bid. There should be no changes allowed midstream by the Government (where half the wasted spending comes from) or the contractor who intentionally bid low knowing the government would give them more money down the road. We have people in our government who benefit directly from this process that are running these contracts, that is the first thing that needs to be changed. As to Boeing in particular, this isn't their first, nor will it be their last failure to deliver on budget or on time (KC-46a, T-7, two new Presidential Aircraft, MQ-25 Refueling Drone, and obviously their space vehicle). Boeing aggressively bid numerous military contracts in the early 2000s and the majority of them are still ongoing, over budget, and we keep giving them money. How our government handles the contractors is what needs to change. Thus my opening statements.

False. All BS. Boeing’s fixed price contracts were just that. Boeing is billions in the hole on Air Force 1, Starliner, T-7, MQ, the tanker etc.
President Trump tweeted probably from the toilet that he wanted a better deal for AirForce 1. So Boeing caved and cut the price and tried to make it work. Everyone knew it wouldn’t work. But no one knew in 2017 the POTUS was full of shit.
So the USG basically just stole money from Boeing investors. Any other company would have backed out of the contract and told the president to shove it. Keep flying your 25yr old planes. I think Boeing is in the red several billion dollars on Air Force 1. And they are doing a great job, not cutting corners, they will be beautiful planes that represent us abroad. Thank you Boeing share holders for your service to our nation.

As a software engineer that must bid on fixed price contracts there is no allowance for me to go over budget which would mean getting more money than my quote. I get the agreed on price when the contracts are completed and delivered on. No more, no less.
If the customers wants changes then it requires some formal addition to the scope of work. Of course this is always a concern because it's common for customers to get into pushing for 'scope creep'. It's incumbent on me to make sure that the contract is VERY specific regarding what is to be delivered in the verbiage of the contract.
When I've poorly estimated a job underbidding I end up working longer hours for what amounts to less money for my time.
If on the other hand I'm able to complete the project in less time spending fewer hours than I estimated, I make out better.
Fixed price contracts are part of working in the 'real world'.

The video did say, it's just that the comment was so brief it was easy to miss. At 2:32 it quotes Elon Musk saying "The CEO of an aircraft company should know how to design aircraft, not spreadsheets". In reality probably too simplistic a statement, but in Boeing's case it's all too true.
The original Boeing was an engineering-driven company. McDonnel-Douglas was driven by pencil-pushers. When they merged it was the McD-D managers that took control. Now, maybe the old Boeing was in financial trouble because their engineers didn't know how to handle money, but when you're manufacturing a product of any type, you need a good percentage of people at the top who thoroughly know the product. The New Boeing failed miserably at this.

When in development if you don't have a product that measures up, shouldn't the product that measures up be used as a fallback? The short answer is yes.
Use the dragon space capsule to get home and then figure out what went wrong.

In this case I don't think it's fair to say space x has a monopoly on the launch market, they are not preventing any other company from showing they can preform just like how Space X is, the different is Space X is flat out showing they can get the job done.

Yes…Space X seems to be the only company able to deliver on schedule, reliably and within price. BTW, FP contracts on high technical risk developmental project are a fools game as requirements shift/change frequently which allows/requires contractors to recover costs incurred by these govt incurred changes.

Bullshit. SPACEX was awarded a little over $2B for crew dragon. You think crew dragon cost $2B or was it $20B? (I don’t know. Not sure it’s public info). The SPACEX employees I saw had Tesla badges, Tesla expense accounts. SPACEX doesn’t have a budget. They spend whatever it takes. It’s not really even like a real company. It’s a billionaire spending his personal wealth on stuff he thinks is cool. There’s something great about that, but it’s nothing like a normal company.

NASA is also required to use the left over technology from the shuttle program... which was done by one or more members of Congress, to keep their constituents employed and hopefully keep those reps in office.
