    Don't worry about painting the MDC on the canopy, Navy Bucs didn't have it. Only fitted to RAF aircraft. How do I know?
    Spent the first 3 yrs of my RAF career converting RN Buccaneers to RAF Spec at RAF St Athans, many moons ago

      I visited St.Athan as a "space cadet" at the end of the 70s (79 maybe?) - there were some F-4s and Buccaneers in the hangars from the FAA. Bloke from the armourers section gave me a length of MDC cord (without the explosive, of course), a half-moon neoprene kind of thing it was. There was a Vulcan as well and we were allowed to climb into the closed bomb bay - cavernous thing! One of the better camps we went on.

      @garys_stuff air cadet trips back in the 90s were great fun. Though by then they had very much clamped down on what cadets were allowed to do after some nasty accidents sadly along with a group of cadets killed in a wessex crash. Still they were fun, but flying was limited to chipmunk, bulldog or when we went to Northolt hs125 or 146 or Andover. .

    Nice build!
    On the subject of Airfix and their spare parts division, I've messed up a couple of canopies in the past and have phoned Airfix up. If you tell them the truth, and that it's not their fault, they'll only ask you to pay a fiver or so for the part and the postage. That strikes me as being fair.

    Gary, a thought for narrow lines like the detonation cords.. a tech drawing pen as the nibs go down to fractions of a millimetre. Then you don't risk overspill and can use a rule to get them exactly were you want. Thinking about it they may come in handy for panel lines too :)

      I’ve used really thinned out black and loaded a fine brush and just used the capillary effect to fill the set chord in the canopy of my 1:48 red arrow. Not seen the buccaneer but that method wouldn’t work of course if the set chords are raised

    In regard to micro set sol and depending in the decal manufacturer they can sometimes react with each other.
    I start with micro set and if needed a hair dryer to assist con formaty to panel lines and compound shapes also it's easy to make a micro sol tray out of packing foam or plastic card and its alot cheaper.

    Those tricky engine cover decals.. a thought. How about using the original decal as a template? Cut out the whole decal. Slice through the tiny Ts at the edges, then carefully place that as a mask and use masking tape to hold it in place.. then paint through the cuts.

    Hi Gary,
    One suggestion for using microsol and microset is to get an old jam jar (or something similar) and put in a mixture of water and microset. I think it's 3 parts water to one part Microset this helps with getting to sit and also gives you a larger container that is harder to knock over. The Microsol is still a worry however.

    I had a similar decal number problem on my italeri typhoon. They didn’t provide enough decals for the band around the AIM-120 AMRAAMs. But on the stencils, they provided way too many. My solution was that I just made only two of the four AMRAAMs. It still looked good though

    )The build is going really well (in my opinion anyway!). Don't worry about the rant - we have been waiting for this kit for so long and all the mouldings look fab. The decal issue is interesting because I've never had a badly fitting set of Cartograf decals. As we all know - you would have to look at real live rounds (or photos at least) to get the real markings. My betting is that someone has looked at a museum piece (which as we all know have a tendency to be repainted - cough, cough) and that is what Cartograf have been asked to reproduce. Just a thought. Absolutely can't wait to get hold of one of these - Victorious or Eagle for me though to go alongside the Sea Vixens.

    • @garys_stuff
      @garys_stuff  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The markings might well be absolutely spot on, as they are printed on the layout sheet. But there aren't enough lines on the decal sheet! An 800NAS bird from Eagle would suit me too.

    • @garys_stuff
      @garys_stuff  ปีที่แล้ว

      Not really - there are days when it feels like work (which it is) and there have been kits I've not really enjoyed building as much as others but generally I'm happy to get on with whatever project is there. Figure painting is different - I've had the same regiment of Portuguese 18mm infantry to paint for ages and just can't get round to starting them.

    • @johnpotts4452

      @@garys_stuff Gary one more question have you used airfix paints on this kit and have you used the gen 2 for spraying. thank you

    • @garys_stuff
      @garys_stuff  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@johnpotts4452 no, I used Vallejo paints on this. I have used some Gen2 paint, some by brush and some through the airbrush. It needs quite a lot of thinning for the airbrush - about 1:1 worked for me - and although I think Humbrol paint is a pure water-based acrylic and can be thinned with simple water, I do tend to use an acrylic thinner (I use the Spruebox one). Remember that in an airbrush you will also need to add a few drops of a retarder or "flow improver" to help prevent paint drying in the nozzle, I use the Vallejo one.

  • @timmy3822
    @timmy3822 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    And I thought my 1:72 kits had a lot of decals... oh boy. That sheer number of decals is intimidating, to the point where it's a little off putting! Looks stunning in the end though.

  • @alsstuff
    @alsstuff 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    From my decal sheet Gary there are 4 x 94 and 4 x 89 which are both black and white. As you use No. 89 on half the missile and you can only have four missisles then there are enough decals. I'm looking at decal option 'A' Ark Royal 1978. The short run decals on the nose are curved and it may be possible you've put them on back to front in which case they won't fit properly (as me how I know from previous kits). Hope this helps 🙂

    • @garys_stuff
      @garys_stuff  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Al, just looking at the decal placement sheet - each of the Martels has two no.94 half-bands - one top front the other bottom middle. Even with three Martels, that's six no.94s. These are simple black stripe decals. The no.89 is black and white, goes on the mid upper segment. I tried the nose bands both ways round in case I was doing it wrong as well! Just couldn't get them to meet up. As for only having four missiles, you can carry four radar Martels, but there are only two in the kit. Soon as you use a TV Martel you also need to carry the data pod which takes up a pylon. So in this version of the kit, you can only have three Martels - either two radar and one TV or two TV and one radar. Perhaps a later boxing of an RAF maritime strike version may have four radar Martels, but as I say the decal sheet will have been redesigned anyway with the different squadron markings.

  • @danwilliams1686
    @danwilliams1686 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Gary I'm greatly enjoying these build videos. On the subject of the canopy detonation cords do you think a water color pencil would work, or maybe go over them with an eraser tip? As far as the missile decals band you have every right to rant about it. It seems like every manufacturer gets them wrong. The bands are too long , too short or not enough of them, or worst of all they are so stiff they won't wrap around the missile. It's frustrating for everyone. Manufacturers do better!

  • @eddgreen9376

    I would mask and spray the bands on the weapons to be honest if you’re not happy with the fit. Oh and you’ve left seam lines on the 1000lb bomb just in case you didn’t spot it. But great build by the way. 👍🏻

    • @garys_stuff
      @garys_stuff  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The lines really are thin so masking and spraying is more trouble than it's worth for me. BTW the 1000lb I just glued up and tried the nose band to see what the fit was like - not intended to be actually used as my Buck is all Martel-ed up!!
