    Finally someone shows an easy way to tell the difference between the two. Thanks alot friend!

      very welcome... no more wasted time being distracted by fools gold, OR worse yet.. buying more recovery equipment trying to extract the dodgy stuff :)

  • @karhukivi
    @karhukivi 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    People are always asking "is this gold?" I always tell them when you have gold in the pan there is no doubt in your mind, you will know it's gold!

    • @redlinetimber
      @redlinetimber  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah, a lot of wasted time goes into chasing the glitter or trying to catch and keep fools gold... I say: always run it WET, add water and a drop of Sun laun. soap to your bucket, if it's real.. it'll stay where you can recover it!!

    That's a real guy man I can understand what he's talking about! Thank you my good man I want to scatter 10 tons of specular time as it tried to run away from me in the sluice.

    Thanks you helped me, I thought I have gold but fools gold. Can I ask, is gold found in the same place as fools gold? I want to continue searching if so.

    • @surreygoldprospector576
      @surreygoldprospector576 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sometimes, yes. But I have found a lot more places with just fools gold only.

    • @redlinetimber
      @redlinetimber  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, they can be found in conjuction with each other but the fools gold will be found with the "light's" material, on top of sand.. you want the "heavy's", the stuff from beneath or on the opposite side of water-way.. gravel, black sand, alluvial deposits on bedrock or sniping stuff from between cracks.. continue to search, prospecting is awesome.. finding Gold is just part of it!!

    So then how do u separate fools gold from real gold

    • @redlinetimber
      @redlinetimber  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No need, just let it go out of the pan or sluice!!.. its when you bother to try to catch it (thinking its the real deal) that you'll go mad.. cause it'll float away or disappear in low light!! Just keep panning, if the gold stays in.. its worth keeping :)

  • @kevin_brown_dc3423
    @kevin_brown_dc3423 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Thank you! I needed this example. I tried panning for the first time today in a creek and the gold kept getting away from me. Now I see that it wasnt gold but fools gold. Boy do I feel like a fool! LOL

    Can anything made of iron pyrite if heated by fire give you a electric shock? Can gold?

    • @redlinetimber
      @redlinetimber  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'm not a "Rock"-et scientist ;) but.. my short answer is no, in fact enough heat will take metal to it's "Curie" point and can't be magnetized. Something about the heat energy scrambles the atoms so they can't line up to build a magnetic field. Heat will cause pyrite to expand and as the moisture evaporates and the friction can cause a small build up of static electricity, but not enough to shock.. same with drilling steel and it's not by the heat alone.. ??what say you.. anyone else??

    Thanks !!! Um ... the denisty of Fools Gold or Pyrite (FeS2, Iorn II diSulfide) is . . . 5.0 g/cm^3. Gold Au is 19.3 g/cm^3. Water is 1.0 g/mL. And if ya don't know the formula for water I can't fricken help.

    Add a drop of dishwashing liquid to the water as fine gold will float and the oils from your fingers will only help that to happen

    • @redlinetimber
      @redlinetimber  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      ..I use Sun free and clear laundry detergent, as it is biodegradable as well.. and has less SUDS - that will float gold too, =0

    Nice demonstration in the pan. Not so much in the test tube. On the middle fork Boise River we had some flakey gold and heavy black sand that really disn't want to separate and took a lot of work when done by hand. The gold settled to the bottom of the blondes just fine, but some would almost always be on top of the heavies to start. Annoying stuff.

    the group i belong to, has a gold claim about 50 miles from the city where i live, i brought back some material, processed it in my garage, seen what looked like flour gold, was not sure, then i added some mercury, sure enough, its gold.

    • @redlinetimber
      @redlinetimber  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Woop-Woop, Yeah!! And.. I pre-wet ALL my material and run it with a few drops of "Sun Free and Clear" low sudsing laundry detergent- breaks surface tension, biodegradable, doesn't dry out hands and makes gold real shiney :) ..checking tailings, not a speck of run over!!
