If you think the brassy colour of pyrite is gold, then you haven't seen gold in the pan! When you do see gold, there is no doubt about it.

    Hi Jeff,
Thanks for making all these videos, it's a great resource. Is there anything a hobbyist miner can do to get the gold out of know gold bearing sulfides? If so may I suggest you do a video on the methods. In my personal case it is tetradymite (gold-bearing bismuth telluride).
    Thanks again.

    Hey Jeff.
Another way to tell the difference between gold and pyrite is in the sun light and shadows. When sun shines on gold and pyrite they both look like gold but cast a shadow on both of them and the gold stays gold color while the pyrite changes color

The best way to tell is to pass a shadow over the two. pyrites will shine in the light but quit shining when in shadow. Gold always glows weather in sun or shadow.

    I love your videos mate.....
I'm from Australia and I found a large fist sized quartz crystal covered in what I thought was gold......
I took it to the local jeweler to ask about it. The big boss wasn't in until the next day but the worker I spoke to told me that I had found gold but to go back the next day to be sure.
I went home all excited and Google how to tell the difference
(your video wasn't up at the time)
I found that if you poke a pin into pyrite the pin head will break off and with gold the pin will go into it.
To my utter disappointment the pin head broke off but I still took it back the next day and it was confirmed that it was only pyrite but it was a very good specimen.
I still have it to remind me how close I came to finding GOLD.
    Lol
Your videos make me laugh as well as learning things
    Keep it up mate
    :D

I am happy to just make enough money to pay for the trip. Keep prospecting Noah. You are out in nature and you will see & find things no one else will by getting out there. I just came back from an area known for its red jasper. Jasper is a semiprecious stone that is very popular now. I was just at The Bloody Basin where red Bloody Basin jasper is found. I have been back about 2 hours. The truck was overheating on the last trip up, but she's fixed now! 195 degree thermostat, so that's the running temperature and it stayed right on 195 all the way up the hill. So, I'll be going back up to another river farther west to pan, since it has been raining a lot. That rain washes the placer gold off the river banks, and hills and down into the river.

If one of the ways to tell the difference between gold and pyrite is to hit it with a hammer because gold is soft and will just flatten out but pyrite with crumble into pieces....then where does gold dust come from? Seems like gold wouldnt break down into a fine powder if it only flattens and bends.

The only fool in fool's gold(sulfides) is the fool who doesn't pick it up. Tellurides(20-70% gold) are a 8-10 in density and very brittle. And some of the highest gold assays come from pyrite and chalcopyrite. The chalcopyrite in your hand is a copper ore and often contains gold and rare metals.Often thousands of grams per metric ton(Kennecott Copper in Utah is almost 100% chalcopyrite)Stop telling old wives tales and study your sulfides on the internet before you claim to be an expert.JackWayne

  • @bobski1976
    @bobski1976 9 ปีที่แล้ว

HI Jeff, Recently I went panning here in Scotland. on a hill where there is a gold mine. there was quartzite veins literary every you looked and lots of quartzite lying around all over the place. We picked a place high up the mountain not far from the gold mine. our panning may need practice as we found nothing when we panned. but there was an amazing amount of pyrite everywhere also. My question is pyrite as fine dust. is it still good looking we collected a few rocks to bring home and crush. even when you pick up one of the rocks and then look at your hands. Its like you have dipped your hand in a bag of glitter. lots of small qaurzite and lots of gold looking stuff that is about the size of a grain of dust. the mine reckon the vein the are tapping has about 4 tons of fine gold in. our gold here is 22k was my first time. still not crushed the rocks still not sure if we got anything. Thanks bob

bobski1976 Iwould use Jet Dry to break the surface tension of the water to get that fine Gold to drop and then use a Jewelers loop to identify the fines of Gold. Then Tap you r Gold to the top of the pan and suffer it out. It is ready to be smelted.

This will prove useful when I do find what looks like gold but it's pyrite. That way I don't make a fool out of myself when I assume that I have found gold.

I have never been to sure about real or fools gold. Great way you have shown us to figure it out! Thank you! Many Blessin's sent your way!
