    Some packing peanuts are water-soluble so you may want to test them before using them for filler planting.

    I'm so glad you showed the peanuts, I use them as a bottom layer as well. I do it because of my back issues, so this tip is especially helpful to those with disabilities! Much LOVE.

    Wonderful tip about the packing peanuts! I have some from a recent Amazon order so now I can use a great terracotta pot that would be too deep otherwise. 👌🏾

      @@lillyanderson181 Yes I’ve learned a lot more since my comment and it’s not recommended to put things in the bottom of pots/use oversized pots. Repotted.

    Hi Case. (My daughter is named Casey also) I love my strings also, but love any draping plants. I noticed you said, I’m sure is that you were in zone 9 as I live in Houston, Tx. I guess my question is do you leave your plants outside or bring them in. I’ve brought mine in because of 100+ degree heat. They are growing like crazy. They live in a south facing window. I also have done everything you’ve done except using the packing peanuts. They will eventually decompose and may be harmful to your strings. I’ve never used alcohol but it sounds harmful, but that’s just me. I personally don’t cut my strings because I want to cover the dirt so I just curl the long strings back into the pot. They also will re-root and therefore will grow more strings. If they are extra long you can let the end dangle over the edge for esthetics. Also, Have you bought from any other suppliers? The pot you bought from Lowes is an orchid pot. Anyway, let’s chat if you want. Maybe we can send pic’s. If interested. Deborah

    I'm new to string of pearls plant. I've just bought six 2inch pots. I bought the most shallow terracotta pot i could find. I put all six pots in the terracotta pot. Im not sure if that was a good idea or not but the pot looked big enough to hold them all.my mixture is miracle-gro moisture control potting mix and lots of perlite. So I guess my question is do you think I did alright by putting all 6 little plants in one pot? I wish I could send a picture for you to look at.

    • @sarahkreller9603
      @sarahkreller9603 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would never suggest using miracle grow especially for succulents. That soil has moisture retaining crystals which will rot the roots.

    about the packing peanuts : some are organic, some are made of "plastic" or chemical matters. I don't know if I would use them ? The organic ones can fall appart with water and the other one can be bad for the plants ?

      @@paramitadanceactive I have never tried anything like that before, sounds awesome! I do know when they are propagating you want to keep it more moist than you would a plant with established roots. Once it is established as long as the medium the roots are in dry out after waterings it may work. Hope that helps

  • @abcdefghijklmnop2054

    My string of Pearls keeps rotting at the base of the roots and the soil is dry so do u think I should cut the root and propagate or something else? I do have it in a glass pot but I have rocks as the first layer then charcoal then sand and then succulent soil .

    • @JC-sv1oy
      @JC-sv1oy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Is their drainage in the glass pot you're using? No matter the amount of things you put in the bottom, without drainage holes, the glass will hold in humidity and the soil will suck up that moisture. If there are drainage holes, the glass is still probably holding too much moisture for your SOP's. It really doesn't take much moisture for rot SOP's.

    • @rdred8693
      @rdred8693 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You need drainage holes, and a terra cotta pot.
      You also don't want a deep pot.

    I just bought my first string of pearls yesterday. It already has long strings, like I didn’t buy it as a baby, she is a good size already and she came in one of those plastic pots, I am new to plants. The soil is also super wet. Should I repot it? Do I wait until the soil is mostly dry to do that? I went to 4 nurseries yesterday looking for this plant!! I was on a mission, I wasn’t going to give up until I found one yesterday lol

    • @Asdfgqedfglo
      @Asdfgqedfglo 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@neynahnehnah1485 no. The string of pearls is dead. The soil was so wet it was infested with fungus gnats which infested every single plant I own so you only can imagine how pissed off I’ve been lol so ever since bringing that plant into my home I’ve been doing everything to get rid of these fungus gnats (and I’ve almost succeeded). This string of pearls was so gross because of the state the nursery had it in that I am completely grossed out by that plant now.

    I am curious how your pearls are doing now. Going to big of a pot for anything of those types of plants is never good for them. The soil will remain wet for way to long and rot them 😔 and adding stuff on the bottom is never good either. It created a perched water table and will eventually do the same thing and stay wet for to long. 😔 That's why I want an update. This is all stuff people preach every day and I want to see how it went for you

    How about if you use 1/3 succulent potting mix, 1/3 Perlite, and 1/3 sandy soil? I feel that Miracle Grow potting mix is a fake soil and succulents like the true earthy soil. It's just my opinion and I may be wrong. :)
