No one uses the entire ocean. Are you going to go from New York to Dover by way of the Antartic? No. IIRC the LNG ship had no one on the bridge at the time; just had autopilot on.
That's probably exactly how it happens. They all think "no way are we gonna come close to another ship out here" and they get complacent and don't pay attention for long periods of time.

Ghost ships go radio silence, that is probably why the ore ship had no idea what that ghost ship's intentions were. Looked like one of China's flagship, running dark, and it is not going to stop, It's going to make a run for it. Makes one wonder what kind of cargo they're hiding. Can't run very far lugging that ore ship, unless they dislodge that anchor somehow. Just my speculation.

The LNG tanker was having mechanical problems that led to a loss of control. The ship that was on anchor was on anchor and therefore had the right of way.
This is very understandable; the ship doing the filming is just to danged small to spot on the open sea like that. Nobody would have been able to spot them in conditions like that.😏
Run, then, unsure about the run, then run to the front of the ship, hear grinding of steal on steal, scream some, watch tank rip apart, spin wheel, camera out of focus, spin wheel more, inhale anchor chain dust, scream again…end video! Very exciting and scary!

It’s seems that it happened near a port roadstead and the bulk carrier had the right way passage, possibly was sailing inbound or outbound, the vessel shown dropping anchor and may have lost engine ( blackout) or bad decision not complying the COLREG. Just guessing.

I’d guess the camera boat is at anchor, and the other one with the extra spicy cargo ran into them for one reason or another.

The NTSB incident report stated neither pilot was at fault and it was due to the shrinking size of the ocean from global warming.

Fortunately, there is a heavy insulation layer on those tanks. The insulation got badly damaged, but the tank itself was not breached.
