It's easy to criticize Hitler for being "too prideful" to retreat at Stalingrad, but I never knew that he had encountered a similar scenario previously and successfully used the strategy of holding his ground. So many historical events are oversimplified when in reality most choices made by leaders like Hitler are made for a reason beyond just pride.
Basically it was a gamble. Retreat and lose half of forces/equipment/artillery for sure or fight, kill enemies and maybe lose whole army. Actually, Germany would lose the war either way. They had small chances to win with Blitzkrieg, but it was mostly suicide from the beginning.
As Hitler himself said talking to Mannerheim "I had no idea they had this much equipment, factories the size of villages. Had i known this before." Only Russia/USSR could come back from such a initial loss of millions of troops and equipment.
German intelligence agencies lied to high military command (and Hitler) about Soviet weapons (modern guns, artillery, T-34 being in early stages of production, etc), size of the army, structure of divisions, loyalty of officers and soldiers (they many times said Red Army will collapse straight away), and the rest, for a long time. They knew everything and shared information only after war started. That's a proven fact. Because they were agents of Britain probably, maybe bought by USA oligarchy and corporations. That's my speculation, but I don't see another explanation.

@left9096 According to Wikipedia, in just 1941, the Soviets suffered 800,000 killed, 1,000,000 wounded, and 2,300,000 captured or missing. That adds up to roughly 4,000,000 lost in just six months. Not to mention, most of the Soviet Air Force was destroyed in just a couple of days, handing the skies over to the Luftwaffe. The Russians literally suffered the worst military disaster in history. This is why there are a lot of notions and stereotypes about German and Soviet military capabilities.

I love how you mentioned the logistics with a railroad picture. The fact the Soviet railroad gauge was different hurt the Germans alot more than people tell. Trains from Germany couldn't directly run on Soviet track because of a size difference, so the Germans commited men and material to rip up the tracks and place new ones
Since the Russian railway guage is wider, they should have begun broadening the guage within German and Polish territory, without being shot at, and building Russian-size locomotives, rather than trying to rebuild the Russian railway where they would be shot at while doing so, and which was never going to catch up with the front in time, or ever. The Russian railway, like the Soviet tanks, worked better with the weather and the less developed infrastructure, because Russian locomotives ran on wood more than coal, and ran less frequent trains, which was safer during the thaw and floods especially. Broad Guage for the win, another piece of Russian cunning that everyone sneered at for being different.

Slava yahivsky where I live in Canada is parallel to Ukraine and I’m more referring to those temperatures but and Leningrad now at Saint Petersburg was the most northern part of the front I don’t doubt Russia’s cold and that are climates are similar I mean we both have boreal forest/Taiga in a majority of our country’s I just plain though it was colder, also Saint Petersburg is parallel to what we call the territories and it can be pretty inhospitable because the climate we give it is called the tundra and is bare, although I’m not a normal temperature in winter is.
This is the best visual representation of Soviet strategic counter-offensive during the winter of 1941/1942 I've ever seen. Now, like others, I can't wait for you to make a vid about Operation Bagration. However, as this vid mostly discussed about the successful German defense against Soviet winter offensive, I think Battle of Rzhev during the winter of 1942/1943(Operation Mars) is also a great candidate for future projects.

Besides, in December 1941 Soviets had a major reinforcement with well-prepared and equipped troops from East (Japanese) front and Siberian conscripts. Also Finnish army failed to collapse Northern supply way, and Soviets still could get land-lease equipment form allies, so besiege of Moscow became a very dangerous idea for Germans.

Prins van Oranje What about the encirclements under Orsha and Bobruisk. What about an encirclement under Minsk? "Was just trapped in Koenigsberg" despite the fact that the encirclement of East Prussia wasn't a part of plan, Isn't that a successful offence to get from Dnepr to Wisla with only a two months? And if the army group "Center" didn't get destroyed, why does the German army got problems there and decided to refill "Hole" in its defence line with units from Southern group of army? They refilled it because they lost a lot of units. So, I think that operation was a huge success.

This fills in alot of gaps I had about the tactical- strategic layer of the eastern campaign, from afar it just seems as if battles were the sole factor of advancement in the second world war, when in reality youe video paints a much clearer picture about the lanes of movement and supply, as well as the logic behind the "hold your ground" strategy the germans employed. This was a great explaination. Keep it up!
Great video as always. I would also like to add that Stalin's attack was not just in the center (although this is arguably where the main attack was) but literally across the whole front. It's as if he was playing HOi4 and decided to select all his units and right click on a random German province at once. ahaha

You should have mentioned in your previous video that the exhaustion of the German units was not the sole factor contributing to their repulse near Moscow, given that the Soviets thanks to their intelligence reports that confirmed Japan would not attack that year, rushed 30 or so divisions from the Siberian front to lead the Counter-Offensive.

The Rzhev salient is one of the most overlooked battlegrounds in the Eastern Front. Such a waste of life and so little gained, the Soviets were still learning and lost many brave men for nothing. But without this fight Army Group Center and it’s troops could have been used somewhere else.

Very informative. You earned a subscriber. The constant fighting on Rzhev-Vyazma bulge had at least one positive effect. It prevented the germans from transferring reinforcements to Stalingrad direction in late 1942. Plus it was slowly and steadily grinding german divisions throughout 1942.
All well that ends well ;) Unfortunately our junior commanders got normal battle commanding skills only in 1943, that was mentioned even in patriotic book sources. Nevertheless, glory to our brave soldiers fought and died for Motherland!

The problem was that the bomber department was persuaded that the bombs without naval landing could have won the war alone. They were determined to push the government in investing more in the Airforce than in any other part of the British army of navy. Or, that's what had written A. Bomber command was hardly the most vocal strategy in WW2. You have the army, intelligence, navy and fighter command to contend with and while they made some initial ground they were never seriously considered to be a sole strategic option for victory.
Estonia is a neo-fascist appartheid state. They used to be industrial centers of the Soviet Union yet now Estonians flee their capitalist shithole (wages at 200%/month) and clear my toilet for 20$. They even joined EU/NATO. I hope it gets obliterated.
They were not fully stopped in Stalingrad until November. Until then, the Germans slowly reduced the size of the Soviet bridgehead until it was only a few hundred meters away from the Volga. Winter, and the Soviet counter attack and eventual encirclement of the sixth army, prevented the complete capture of Stalingrad by the Germans. They were by no means stopped, just slowed down due to urban warfare.
The real moment when they were stopped wasn't Stalingrad, it was south of Stalingrad. In mid 1942 Germany was running dangerously low on fuel, the Caucasian oil fields was what would decide the entire war. Sadly for the Germans, the Soviets were very effective in sabotaging the oil wells and Germany just didn't deploy enough forces to be able to hold the massive frontline they created in the Caucasus region. THAT stopped the war, not Stalingrad
And as Cypek said, while the battle of Stalingrad didn't start in the summer the Germans were steadily taking the city until winter and operation Uranus.
Torrential downpours/soviet mud turned into a logistical nightmare. Then an early and historically fierce ( record breaking ) winter. Had the seasons been more normal, there would have been substantially different situations (not saying German victory, but it wasn’t a long shot either)

Mostly, the German POWs throuhout the war have been used in rebuilding the cities and roads. Among 95k prisoners from Stalingrad 5k returned back to Germany alive.

I am very disappointed in the Soviet plan because, for France and Germany, they had a master plans the used a "great strategy" from the beginning of the war. The Soviets kind of just had the situation arise. I kind of expected for some crazy tactics by the Soviets but then you say, well the Soviet army sucked at the begging of the war. But anyways, great video and I hope you make a lot more of these types of videos. I am also excited for the British video.
I see your point and have a similar vision, but sadly source material doesn't always fit in the niche of the series. I am working on a side project about Germany and its plans to win WWI. It is on a grand geopolitical level and I think you'll enjoy it.
Master Carson, USSR didn't plan to start the war, but they were confident in their forces and didn't expect a defensive fight on motherland (since Voroshilov's statement in 1938), so all the logistics, airfields etc were fatally concentrated close to the enemy border. Soviets knew the German strategic aim to Ukraine (nothing new since WW1), so they concenrated main forces in Ukraine against Romania (as you can see in the first Eastory video), Soviet command staff games (read marshal Zhukov memoirs) considered Germans could penetrate border not deeper than ~100 km, so the counterattack was aimed to the most vulnerable Balkan states least loyal to Hitler, and it was true expectation, since later in 1944, when the Red Army came to the borders of Romania and Bulgaria, anti-fascist revolutions happened there.
You forgot to say that Soviet army went through extensive pre war expansion, from 500K to over 4.5 milion, and in 1941. it was comprised of poorly trained recruits, who were again replaced by even more poorly trained recruits, so in the end it made no real difference.
All armies went through extensive expansion during the war. Starting pre-war the Soviet should have had an advantage, not a disavantage. This argument isn't convincing.
The manpower advantage the Axis enjoyed in June 1941 (30-40%) doesn't explain why the Soviets forces were utterly destroyed. And the Soviets had a large advantage in tanks and planes...
The 7 nations nazi army of death deploued 3.829.000 men as opposed to just 2.680.000 men of the glorious Union of the workers. The tanks used by the Soviets predominately were BT-5 and T-26 which were utter crap. By 1942 the Soviets had deployed the brand new T-34 and KV-1 which shred the inferior panzer III and IV and the Germans had a hard time against the slopped Soviet armour until they upgraded Panzer IV with a .88 cannon and put out panzer V Panther and panzer VI Tiger, which although powerful were costly, slow and innefficient. By 1943 just right after the battle of Moscow the reality of the war had changed, the inexperienced Soviet troops had been dead or under Nazi captivity, while the most experienced troops of the Wehrmacht were dead or injured. It was the time when the Soviets managed to strike the world-wide renown victories against the Nazis in Stalingrad (February 1943) and Kursk (August 1943) swifting the tide of the war in favour of the allies. Surely the German proffessional soldiers who stroke the first victories that shocked the west in the Battles of France, in Scandinavia and the Balkans were more experienced but the Germans lacked the reserves, Versailles treaty had forbade them to raise more than 100.000 soldiers, 3.500.000 under Hitler, while the Soviet Union had implemented conscription for all adult males for 1 to 2 years. When the proffesional soldiers from both sides died, the Soviet conscripts who had undergone training were more efficient than the German ones. Additionaly the Soviets although until IS-2 tanks came out had an inferior armour, managed to mass produce more versality, fast and powerful tanks, the T-34 and their future varients, German armour was way too slow, costly and ridiculous irresilient to the Russian climate. The true Victory tho comes from the backlines, the Germans relied on slave labour on their death camps, while the Soviet Union rellied on volunteer workers who wished to offer 110% of their capabilities in the service of their country, the Soviet Union after all was a worker state and that helped a lot, free workers win on both quantity and quality the slave labour of the inhumane nazis. For example, the Nazis produced 40.000 tanks, the Soviets produced 110.000, the Nazis produced 100.000 planes, the Soviets produced 135.000 planes, the Nazis produced 75.000 cannons, the Soviets produced 520.000 cannons, the Nazis managed to equip 16 million men, the Soviets managed to equip 34 million men.
Again this nonsense about the Napoleon's army retreating in the depth of winter... Napoleon's army started it's retreat in early October when it was already depleted and was out of Russia COMPLETELY by mid November. The last battle was while crossing Berezina, a shallow river was not frozen.

Not to mention, most of the Soviet Air Force was destroyed in just a couple of days, handing the skies over to the Luftwaffe. The Russians literally suffered the worst military disaster in history. This is why there are a lot of notions and stereotypes about German and Soviet military capabilities.

I love how you mentioned the logistics with a railroad picture. The fact the Soviet railroad gauge was different hurt the Germans alot more than people tell.
Trains from Germany couldn't directly run on Soviet track because of a size difference, so the Germans commited men and material to rip up the tracks and place new ones

Retreating armies tend to tear up rails anyway. Once a road bed is there it's easier to place new rails.
Since the Russian railway guage is wider, they should have begun broadening the guage within German and Polish territory, without being shot at, and building Russian-size locomotives, rather than trying to rebuild the Russian railway where they would be shot at while doing so, and which was never going to catch up with the front in time, or ever. The Russian railway, like the Soviet tanks, worked better with the weather and the less developed infrastructure, because Russian locomotives ran on wood more than coal, and ran less frequent trains, which was safer during the thaw and floods especially. Broad Guage for the win, another piece of Russian cunning that everyone sneered at for being different.

long answer: My comment was a joke on the fact that Italy was a major weakness for the Central Powers. They were inefficient and at many times were a liability and handicap to the German war effort. When Italy switches sides I imagine the Allies complaining while the Axis Powers rejoiced because they no longer had the handicap.

Slava yahivsky where I live in Canada is parallel to Ukraine and I’m more referring to those temperatures but and Leningrad now at Saint Petersburg was the most northern part of the front I don’t doubt Russia’s cold and that are climates are similar I mean we both have boreal forest/Taiga in a majority of our country’s I just plain though it was colder, also Saint Petersburg is parallel to what we call the territories and it can be pretty inhospitable because the climate we give it is called the tundra and is bare, although I’m not a normal temperature in winter is.

Besides, in December 1941 Soviets had a major reinforcement with well-prepared and equipped troops from East (Japanese) front and Siberian conscripts. Also Finnish army failed to collapse Northern supply way, and Soviets still could get land-lease equipment form allies, so besiege of Moscow became a very dangerous idea for Germans.

How do you know every Soviet and German divisions' positions and maneuvers at every day so you manage to show them with their respective numbers on the map?
I use the maps that were created by units staffs during the operations.

"Was just trapped in Koenigsberg" despite the fact that the encirclement of East Prussia wasn't a part of plan, Isn't that a successful offence to get from Dnepr to Wisla with only a two months? And if the army group "Center" didn't get destroyed, why does the German army got problems there and decided to refill "Hole" in its defence line with units from Southern group of army? They refilled it because they lost a lot of units. So, I think that operation was a huge success.

This fills in alot of gaps I had about the tactical- strategic layer of the eastern campaign, from afar it just seems as if battles were the sole factor of advancement in the second world war, when in reality youe video paints a much clearer picture about the lanes of movement and supply, as well as the logic behind the "hold your ground" strategy the germans employed. This was a great explaination.

I would be lying if I said I actually understood how encircling and pincers prior to watching these two videos such used this visuals.
You should have mentioned in your previous video that the exhaustion of the German units was not the sole factor contributing to their repulse near Moscow, given that the Soviets thanks to their intelligence reports that confirmed Japan would not attack that year, rushed 30 or so divisions from the Siberian front to lead the Counter-Offensive.

The Rzhev salient is one of the most overlooked battlegrounds in the Eastern Front. Such a waste of life and so little gained, the Soviets were still learning and lost many brave men for nothing.
But without this fight Army Group Center and it’s troops could have been used somewhere else.
So glad I came across this channel. Seeing the units on the map like that moving over time helps a lot with visualizing what was happening.

The constant fighting on Rzhev-Vyazma bulge had at least one positive effect. It prevented the germans from transferring reinforcements to Stalingrad direction in late 1942. Plus it was slowly and steadily grinding german divisions throughout 1942.
When Soviets attacked Finland in 1939: OH SHIT, GENERAL FROST FRIEDNLY FIRES US!
I did not mention it, but they did learn quite a lot about the winter combat in the Winter War and put the experience to good use in 1941/42.

The problem was that the bomber department was persuaded that the bombs without naval landing could have won the war alone. They were determined to push the government in investing more in the Airforce than in any other part of the British army of navy. Or, that's what had written A. Beavor in his book.

Bomber command was hardly the most vocal strategy in WW2. You have the army, intelligence, navy and fighter command to contend with and while they made some initial ground they were never seriously considered to be a sole strategic option for victory.
Still. In the winter of 41-42, the Red Army trivially lacked artillery shells. This is basic. But tanks, airplanes too.

10:10 Germans were ok but then the winter came? Are you f kidding me? They were stopped in Stalingrad in September 1942 when it was +25.
They were not fully stopped in Stalingrad until November. Until then, the Germans slowly reduced the size of the Soviet bridgehead until it was only a few hundred meters away from the Volga. Winter, and the Soviet counter attack and eventual encirclement of the sixth army, prevented the complete capture of Stalingrad by the Germans. They were by no means stopped, just slowed down due to urban warfare.
The real moment when they were stopped wasn't Stalingrad, it was south of Stalingrad. In mid 1942 Germany was running dangerously low on fuel, the Caucasian oil fields was what would decide the entire war. Sadly for the Germans, the Soviets were very effective in sabotaging the oil wells and Germany just didn't deploy enough forces to be able to hold the massive frontline they created in the Caucasus region. THAT stopped the war, not Stalingrad
And as Cypek said, while the battle of Stalingrad didn't start in the summer the Germans were steadily taking the city until winter and operation Uranus.
Torrential downpours/soviet mud turned into a logistical nightmare. Then an early and historically fierce ( record breaking ) winter. Had the seasons been more normal, there would have been substantially different situations (not saying German victory, but it wasn’t a long shot either)
A plan to win WW2 by smaller nations like Poland, Spain or Greece would be interesting too.
Also a few vids about the Asian part with China,Japan and USSR (again, but in a different region) would be nice

Among 95k prisoners from Stalingrad 5k returned back to Germany alive.

Исаев, а именно на сравнение расстрелянного боезапаса сторонами во время зимнего наступления 1941-1942 (даже с учётом растянутых коммуникаций у вермахта расстреляно втрое больше снарядов просто из-за того, что у СССР отвалились снарядные заводы на Украине, Беларуси и в Ленинграде, остался по сути один в Туле), а также на неправильную организацию танковых войск - бригадное устройство и общую недостачу танков, которые исчезали у РККА быстрее из-за того, что танки стали для РККА заменой артиллерии по описанным выше причинам.
В операции Уран, например, окружение осуществляли уже не танковые бригады, а по-сути танковые дивизии, собранные по подобию немецких после того как в руки Ставки попали организационные немецкие документы, по которым и прошла реорганизация.
Танковые бригады зимой 1941 года обладали слишком малой ударной силой, потому и выдохлись не достигнув намеченных целей, тогда как зимой 1942 части окружавшие Сталинград уже могли бить на огромную оперативную глубину из-за своей совершенно другой организации и размеров, и потому достигли успехов.

I am very disappointed in the Soviet plan because, for France and Germany, they had a master plans the used a "great strategy" from the beginning of the war. The Soviets kind of just had the situation arise. I kind of expected for some crazy tactics by the Soviets but then you say, well the Soviet army sucked at the begging of the war. But anyways, great video and I hope you make a lot more of these types of videos. I am also excited for the British video.
I see your point and have a similar vision, but sadly source material doesn't always fit in the niche of the series. I am working on a side project about Germany and its plans to win WWI. It is on a grand geopolitical level and I think you'll enjoy it.

Soviets did not have a plans for defeating German army near Moscow because they didn't expect Germany to come anywhere near.

Master Carson, USSR didn't plan to start the war, but they were confident in their forces and didn't expect a defensive fight on motherland (since Voroshilov's statement in 1938), so all the logistics, airfields etc were fatally concentrated close to the enemy border. Soviets knew the German strategic aim to Ukraine (nothing new since WW1), so they concenrated main forces in Ukraine against Romania (as you can see in the first Eastory video), Soviet command staff games (read marshal Zhukov memoirs) considered Germans could penetrate border not deeper than ~100 km, so the counterattack was aimed to the most vulnerable Balkan states least loyal to Hitler, and it was true expectation, since later in 1944, when the Red Army came to the borders of Romania and Bulgaria, anti-fascist revolutions happened there.

You forgot to say that Soviet army went through extensive pre war expansion, from 500K to over 4.5 milion, and in 1941. it was comprised of poorly trained recruits, who were again replaced by even more poorly trained recruits, so in the end it made no real difference.

All armies went through extensive expansion during the war. Starting pre-war the Soviet should have had an advantage, not a disavantage. This argument isn't convincing.

The manpower advantage the Axis enjoyed in June 1941 (30-40%) doesn't explain why the Soviets forces were utterly destroyed. And the Soviets had a large advantage in tanks and planes...
The 7 nations nazi army of death deploued 3.829.000 men as opposed to just 2.680.000 men of the glorious Union of the workers. The tanks used by the Soviets predominately were BT-5 and T-26 which were utter crap. By 1942 the Soviets had deployed the brand new T-34 and KV-1 which shred the inferior panzer III and IV and the Germans had a hard time against the slopped Soviet armour until they upgraded Panzer IV with a .88 cannon and put out panzer V Panther and panzer VI Tiger, which although powerful were costly, slow and innefficient. By 1943 just right after the battle of Moscow the reality of the war had changed, the inexperienced Soviet troops had been dead or under Nazi captivity, while the most experienced troops of the Wehrmacht were dead or injured. It was the time when the Soviets managed to strike the world-wide renown victories against the Nazis in Stalingrad (February 1943) and Kursk (August 1943) swifting the tide of the war in favour of the allies. Surely the German proffessional soldiers who stroke the first victories that shocked the west in the Battles of France, in Scandinavia and the Balkans were more experienced but the Germans lacked the reserves, Versailles treaty had forbade them to raise more than 100.000 soldiers, 3.500.000 under Hitler, while the Soviet Union had implemented conscription for all adult males for 1 to 2 years. When the proffesional soldiers from both sides died, the Soviet conscripts who had undergone training were more efficient than the German ones. Additionaly the Soviets although until IS-2 tanks came out had an inferior armour, managed to mass produce more versality, fast and powerful tanks, the T-34 and their future varients, German armour was way too slow, costly and ridiculous irresilient to the Russian climate. The true Victory tho comes from the backlines, the Germans relied on slave labour on their death camps, while the Soviet Union rellied on volunteer workers who wished to offer 110% of their capabilities in the service of their country, the Soviet Union after all was a worker state and that helped a lot, free workers win on both quantity and quality the slave labour of the inhumane nazis. For example, the Nazis produced 40.000 tanks, the Soviets produced 110.000, the Nazis produced 100.000 planes, the Soviets produced 135.000 planes, the Nazis produced 75.000 cannons, the Soviets produced 520.000 cannons, the Nazis managed to equip 16 million men, the Soviets managed to equip 34 million men.

Again this nonsense about the Napoleon's army retreating in the depth of winter... Napoleon's army started it's retreat in early October when it was already depleted and was out of Russia COMPLETELY by mid November. The last battle was while crossing Berezina, a shallow river was not frozen.
